I called for your help before Googling up Bangs. My interest is fining family names in Methodist archives. Gggrandmother was ardent Methodist.... even help found one small church. She seemed bent on naming kids after her inspirations... Gideon Sarvis is one... actually found him in Methodist archives. Not a minister but ardent lay-orator.
thanks,
Ann

My interest is a little bizarre. My gggrandparents seemed to like naming their children after Methodist minister/circuit ministers. Samuel Gideon Sarvis was one such name. Gideon was a lay-minister in Altoona area. I found info on him in Methodist archives. Seemingly a very strong orator, but also a common laborer. I was trying to identify names of other kids with Methodists... Sylvester Baker Clinton & Harry Royer. There is one known William Alexander minister but haven't found info on him.
so you can see my arcane interest. Would love to find any records kept by these possibilities.
Ann

The books I was refering to are by Nathan Bangs books.google.com/books?id=tyURAAAAIAAJ...
This is the address for them. This is a 5 volum set and I think what you want is in the last part of Vol 4. If this does not help get back with me and I will check in my books
fishing@kiva.net

I am still on line but don't really have much to add. I have a little info on both Nathan and Richard Swain if you'd like it. I also still don't know if they are the ancestors I am looking for. Are you looking for someone in particular or just Mehtodist info in general? I will try "googling" Bangs List as I don't know what it is either.

Methodist orphanage or orphan train 1895-1899 / Southern Illinois

I am looking for information about the Dunn Family (possibly spelled Dunne). I believe the family was residing in Saline County, IL, from Oct 1890 to Nov 1893, probably longer.

Mr & Mrs Dunn were killed in an unknown accident, between 1895-1899. Their children were initially sent to an orphanage, and then separated and sent to strangers for adoption. They had 2 young boys and a baby girl (possibly others). Their son, Fredrick Herman Dunn, was born Oct. 15 1890 in Galatia, IL. He went to Olmsted County, MN where he was adopted by Sebert & Elma Leonard. Their other son, Glenn Ray Dunn, was born Nov. 16, 1893 in Galatia, IL. He went to Spring Valley, MN where he was adopted by Jerome & Georgianna Stevens. I have no information on the baby girl or other children.

I'm uncertain why the boys were sent to Minnesota - an "orphan train" or the Methodist Church may have been involved. Please contact me if you have any information: rrs.sjda@yahoo.com Thank you, Renae
Re: Rev Archibald Maclae

Rev Archibald Maclae was the author of the following work:

MacLae, Archibald. A Selection of Hymns for Public Worship.
New-York: Printed by William A. Davis, 1806. Leather, 5 3/4 x 3 1/2, 354 pages, index. Inscribed "Abigail Parker's book, presented to her by Rev. Archibald McLae, New York."

It is a rare book. The inscription in this copy indicates that he was a minister in New York city.

He was an immigrant from Scotand, coming over in 1804. He started out as a Congregationalist and eventually became a Baptist. He died in 1860. There is an article about him on page 644 of Baptist Hymnwriters and their Hymns, by Burrage. His name is sometimes spelled Maclay. A biography of him was written by Isaac Walker Maclay in 1902.

Cheers~
Steve Wurth

www.spwurth.com

Hello SShipley,
We are definitely cousins. I show that William Bee Mink and Erma Loutisha Mink had 10 children (one died in infancy). I have the other nine names if you would like them. I also have about three generations further back on William Minks ancestors. If I can be of any help with your lines email me at deldaniel@sbcglobal.net. I will share any info that I have. My Duncan line goes back to Benjamin Duncan and Susannah Cox. I have an old tin type picture of Abner Duncan in his Civil War uniform. I can email you a copy of it if you don't already have it.
Del Daniel in Sunny Southern California

I'm looking for an obituary for Thaddeus (sp?) Reed, who married Rebecca Dibble, and died in Jay, New York in March of 1840. I was able to find a snippet of it on Google Books, but could not get the obituary in whole. The nearest library with the collection is over 100 miles away. If anyone has access to this, or knows of other repositories near Grand Rapids, Michigan, I'd be greatly appreciative.

Currently researching Reverend Richards, a Methodist minister serving in Nebraska, unknown county, about 1900-1901. Found mention of him in a Marshall County, MN newspaper due to a visit to his sister, Mary Jane (Richards) Nichols/Nicholls. Would like to check the 1900 Soundex for any trace of him. He would likely be listed as a minister. Stuck on finding additional details about this Richards family and hope that he will provide more helpful clues as to their origins. Would like to see if he was married and possibly had children of his own. Have nothing more to go on other than his name and the fact that he was a Methodist minister. Possibly from Cornwall, England originally (born in 1840s or 1850s?) Any info. is welcome and greatly appreciated! THANKS!

He immigrated in 1848 with his mother, Elizabeth (RICHARDS) NICHOLS/NICHOLLS and 6 siblings. His father, Henry, had immigrated in 1847. They lived in Iowa Co., WI (Mineral Point) and Grant Co., WI (British Hollow) before moving to Eagle River, Keweenaw Co., MI in 1855. In 1856, Henry was killed in a mining accident at the Central Mine. His son, Andrew had married Mary Jane HARRIS on 12-24-1860 at the Old North American Mine in Houghton, MI. She died in 1874. He married Ann Warmington in 1875, but she either died or they divorced. Between 1876-1878, he married Mary Jane (RICHARDS) (?), a widow with children of her own. Mary Jane was born 1839-1845, probably in Cornwall too. I don't know her married name, but her maiden name must have been RICHARDS. I found an article in an area newspaper in Marshall County, MN where Andrew and Mary Jane (RICHARDS) (?) moved in 1883 with their family. The article states that in 1901, Mary Jane's brother, a Methodist minister by the name of Rev. RICHARDS, was visiting her from Nebraska (County Unknown). How would I go about tracing this minister to learn more about other siblings, parents, etc. ? Is there a directory or an index of Methodist ministers for Nebraska about 1901? Any info. is appreciated! THANKS!
Hi Heather,

You need a book. I'm afraid I don't have a copy but it is fantastic. 'It does what it says on the can.' I got every thing: Dates of birth, connexion and death and siting of an obituary. Plus all his stations. Mind you gt gt grandfather did become President of Conference - United Methodist Free Church.

The title is huge

ISBN: 9780716200765
United Methodist Ministers and Their Circuits: Being an Arrangement in Alphabetical Order of the Stations of Ministers of the Methodist New Connexion, Bible Christians, Arminian Methodists, Protestant Methodists, Wesleyan Methodist Association, Wesleyan Reformers, United Methodist Free Churches and the United Methodist Church 1797-1932.

By Rev. Oliver A. Beckerlegge, 1968

I think someone should have told you that Methodist records are now stored nationally at John Ryland's University Library, http://www.library.manchester.ac.uk/ Well that's what I was told.

Good luck

Mike

I am seeking more information on the marraige of Charles Buckland And Mary Wenman, both of NYC, who were married on October 25 1865 at 314 W 17th st NYC. I would like to know if this was the church's address or her home and who the witnesses were. I don't know if this info would be available in that book but for my family history it would help to tell if Charles' family were opposed to the marraige.
Thank you again.
Elena

There is a book called, as I remember, Methodist Marriages in New York City. My g.grandparents, Catherine "Kate" Hyatt and States B. Lawrence were married there in 1850. There is a copy of the book in the main library "John Germany Library" in Tampa Florida. They have a very good genealogical area.

Edward L. Frank

Henry L. SMITH b. @1833 GA Methodist Minister

I am searching for any information on Henry L. Smith born @1833 GA, unknown parents & siblings.

I know Henry L. Smith served the entire Civil War, joining Nov 26, Columbus, Fayette Co., KY enlisted as Private in Co. A, 12th LA. Infantry No. Louisana Cadets" and was captured May 16, 1863 in the Battle of Bakers Creek, VA. He was on the Federal Rolls of Prisoners of War, sent to Memphis, TN May 25, 1863.

Henry L. Smith was Received at Fort Delaware, Delaware on June 15, 1863.

Henry L. Smith was transferred to USA General Hospital, Chester, PA, July 19, 1863.

He was Exchanged at City Pt., VA Aug 20, 1863.

Nov 1863 Henry L. Smith was present in 12th Rgt, Co.A, LA Regt again.

July 23, 1864 Henry L. Smith requested to be reduced in Rank from Sgt. to Private.

April 26, 1865 Henry L. Smith was on Rolls of Prisoners of War, CSA but was paroled at Greensboro, NC.

Henry was injured but made his way to Selma, Dallas Co., AL and married Elzabeth Howard McDow on June 7, 1865, she was 20 and he was 32 years old.

They were in Sabine Parish, LA 1870 Census and he is listed as a Methodist Minister, with their children and he was dead by 1876 when his wife was changing the homestead to her name.

Henry L. Smith had children:
Mary Telula Smith b. 1866 LA
Samuel A. Smith b. 1868, LA he would also be a Minister
Anna Rebecca Smith b. @1869 LA
Raleigh Reese Smith b. @1874 LA He would also be a Methodist Minister.

Henry L. Smith also had a brother in law, William Reese McDow who lived with Henry L. Smiths family for a while after Henry married Elizabeth McDow (whose parents had died) and William Reese McDow would also become a Methodist Minister.

But I have NEVER located parents and siblings of Henry L. Smith? Where was this man from in GA?

I had hoped that it might be on some old records some where, listing names of the parents of Henry L. Smith?

I know that there is a Henry Smith buried next to a Susie Smith, & Tom Smith, no dates on any of their headstone's at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, 8 miles west of Hornbeck in Sabine Parish, LA. That may or may not be Henry L. Smith but the headstones are very old per my cousin who saw them.

Since so many of this Smith line became Minister's I wondered if anyone could connect to our earliest Smith, Henry L. Smith, b. about 1833 GA? Maybe he also came from a line of Ministers?

Henry L. Smith's widow and children would move to Smith/Van Zandt Counties area of TX by 1880. I do not locate Samuel or Raleigh Reese Smith on the 1880 Census with ElIzabeth Howard McDow (1)Smith (2) Davis but they were in the area later. Samuel & Raleigh were children in 1880 and I do not know who they were with during the Census but they were probably with relatives because Elizabeth was preparing to marry Dr. William Alexander Allen Nov 14, 1880, Van Zandt Co., TX.

Elizabeth had briefly married John L. Davis to protect her "respectability" because John L. Davis had helped her to sell her farm and moved Elizabeth and her children from LA to Smith/Van Zandt County areas in TX as soon as she sold her farm. During those times a lady could not travel with a man freely. John L. Davis was their neighbor in Sabine Parish for many years and he returned to Sabine Parish and married again, he had been widowed about the same time as Elizabeth.

1900 Hunt Co., Justice Prec. 1, TX the youngest son of Henry L. Smith, Rollie R. Smith (he would later go by Reese Smith) was in Holiness University. At that time Raleigh Reese Smith was a widower and his small daughter was with his Mother-in-law, Mary Paget in Van Zandt Co., TX Justice Prec. 4.

Any help on the family of Henry L. Smith would be greatly appreciated.

Charlene ccs1101@aol.com
Methodist Church in Scott Co., TN ca 1860

The 1860 Scott Co., TN census includes John Massengale (b abt 1814) whose occupation is listed as "Methodist Clergy". The organization that keeps the archives for the Methodist Church says they do not have a record of John Massengale but that does not mean that he did not serve in some capacity. I was hoping to find some record, ideally an obit or something, for John who apparently died prior to 1870 as I cannot find him in that census. Is anyone familiar with the Methodist Church in the Scott Co., TN area during that era? Where would the church have been located at that time? Is it still there? If John was not an actual clergyman, in what other capacity might he have served in order to list that as his occupation? Where might one find church records dating back to that era?

Forest River Methodist Church, bio

FOREST RIVER METHODIST CHURCH
Walsh Heritage, ND 1881-1981
Vol 1 - p. 491

The Forest River Methodist Church was first organized Aug 17, 1881 with the Rev. R.J. Laird as the first minister. Services were held in a building on the north edge of town until a new church was built under the direction of John M. Woods. The exact building date is not listed other than in the early 1890's. A charter was granted to the church in 1891 and the large number of new members in 1892 and 1893 suggests those years as the building date.

Forest River Methodist Episopal Church served Ardoch also with ministers living in Forest River. There have been 28 resident ministers who served this church until 1937. Then the Arodch Church was closed and Forest River shared ministers with Grafton, Larimore or by ministers fra Wesley College in Grand Forks.

Listed as members of this church in 1882 were Mr and Mrs Thomas Scott, Mr and Mrs Henry Brennan and Mr William Morwood.

The first baptism was that of an infant, Mary J., child of John and Ida Davis, by the Rev E. P. Hall on Dec 23, 1883.

This church continued until 1964 when members of the Forest River Presbyterian Church and the Forest River Methodist united and began a new chartered church called Forest River Community Church. They held services in the Methodist Church building until Mar 1966, when it was torn down and a new church on the same site was dedicated.

Re: Member Query for Bethel Chapel, Springdale( Charlestown) Indiana 1807

Hi Doug,

Hope this finds you well. I can't find any entries that mention Elijah HURST and Bethel Chapel online --but there is a lot of information available at the Archives at Wesleyan College. I understand they are very good about getting back to folks with specific requests.

The early seat of Clark county was called Springville. That land is located on what is now in the Ammunition Plant. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springville,_Indiana

There are good notes on the Robertson family here: http://www.shawhan.com/Notes/robertson.html

I have a collateral connection to the Robertson family in my LETT line.

Sherri (yes, that Sherri!) Abromavage

"A Compendious History Of American Methodism" Creator, Abel Stevens. Publisher, Carlton & Porter mentions there were 67 members by 1807, so surely a list of names does exist. (It also says that by 1810 there were three circuits, four circuit riders, and over 700 members.

http://wesley.nnu.edu/wesleyctr/books/0201-0300/stevens/0244...
A Google search turned up this: HISTORY of the METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH in the United States of America By Abel Stevens

[...]

Methodism was then fully on its march into the Northwestern Territory, at nearly every accessible point, by the close of our present period. It had not only invaded Ohio, but reached hopefully beyond it. As early as 1802 [32]Methodist preachers ventured within the present limits of Indiana, which then had but a few scattered settlers. Its first Methodist was Nathan Robertson, who moved from Kentucky to Charleston in 1799; three years later a small class was organized at Gassaway, near Charleston, in Clark County. [33] The first chapel of the denomination, in the state, still stands about two miles from Charleston; it was made of hewed logs, and is in a good state of preservation, though not used for worship." [34] By 1807 we shall find in the state one circuit, with one preacher. And sixty-seven members; and by 1810, three circuits, four preachers, and seven hundred and sixty members, the beginning of that great host, now a hundred thousand strong, led by four hundred itinerants

http://www.depauw.edu/library/archives/methinventories/rober...

Robertson Meeting House - Old Bethel (Rivervale Campground, Lawrence County - Mitchell, Indiana)MC 49, 501, 512

ARCHIVES OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY AND INDIANA UNITED METHODISM

Robertson Meeting House (Old Bethel)
Size: 3 document cases, 1.20 linear feet
Restrictions: None
Accession: M999.017, M999.018, M999.060, M999.061, M000.012, M000.014, M000.028, M000.062, M002.006, and various others
Provenance: various donors and from time capsule placed between logs on north side, near northeast corner of building as it was situated between Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church and Charter House October 1998.
Processed by: Angela Beauchamp, 1985; Jenney Taylor, 1999

Historical Sketch
Robertson Meeting House (Old Bethel Church) was erected in 1807 on the farm of Nathan Robertson in Clark's Grant, Indiana, three miles north of Charlestown. The Robertson Meeting House, also known as Old Bethel was the first Methodist church in Indiana and Moses Ashworth, the first circuit rider in Indiana, was the pastor. In 1837, the church was moved a quarter mile south and later moved to Lexington highway. By 1857, Old Bethel had been abandoned and was being used as a sheepfold.Around 1903 or 1904, the church was restored and moved back to its original site on the Robertson farm, but was moved again in 1925 when it was rebuilt in Charlestown and put under cover. Finally, Old Bethel Church was restored again in 1953-54 on the grounds of Gobin Memorial Methodist Church on the DePauw University campus in Greencastle. It was dedicated as part of the ceremonies marking DePauw's 118th anniversary. The restoration was sponsored by the Indiana Conference, DePauw University and Charles M. Robertson, Sr., a descendant of Nathan Robertson, as a shrine to Indiana Methodism. In 1998 the South Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church voted $100,000 in funds to move and restore the Robertson Meeting House. The moving of the Meeting House from Greencastle to the Rivervale Campground near Mitchell, Indiana, commenced in October. The re-construction was completed on March 5, 1999.
Collection Statement
The collection contains clippings, articles, documents and pictures of Old Bethel Church near Charlestown and in Greencastle, and a photo of David Wheeler and Margaret Robertson's gravestone. It was built in 1807 for Nathan Robertson on his farm in Clark County, just north of present day Charlestown, Ind.

For the next fifty years the Robertson Meeting House was used for church services, visited by such noteworthy early Indiana circuit riders as Peter Cartwright, as a location for many early camp meetings, and was surrounded by pioneer graves.

After 1857, the Meeting House became a farm building, was neglected, moved, restored, continually needing upgrading. Its next to last move in 1954 was to the campus of DePauw University near the Gobin Memorial UMC. The name (Old Bethel) was then used and many became familiar with it under that name. In 1995 title was transferred to the Conference Corporation of the South Indiana Conference. With funding through the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, the South Indiana Conference United Methodist Historical Society and the Conference itself, the Robertson Meeting House was restored to its original appearance, moved to the grounds of the Rivervale campground. It continues to be used for a chapel of worship as well as a historical teaching tool.
Joseph Gibson - Morpeth Local Preacher

Mr GG Grandfather, Joseph Gibson, died on 20 or 29 August 1907 aged 78 years and the inscription on his headstone states that he was a local preacher for 40 years of the Morpeth Circuit in Northumberland. Other records I have obtained show that he was a Methodist local preacher. Are there any records regarding Methodist local preachers in the 1800's still in existence for the Morpeth Circuit and who would I contact to check for any information in those records for Joseph Gibson. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Paul, I have an obit for John Edwards. According to it, Rev Edwards held appointments in the following areas between 1833 and 1868: Chester Circuit, Lebanon, Soudersburg, Springfield, Chester, Susquehanna Mission, Halifax, Stroudsburg, Millersville, Springfield, Attleboro', Newtown, Radnor, Fulton, Oxford, Pottstown, Brandywine, Willow Grove, Del., Worcester, Laurel, Church Creek, Salem Circuit, Marshallton and Kennett, and Kennett and Unionville. After 1868, "...he visited many of his former charges, preaching the Gospel.." Halifax is south of Millersburg, so it is possible that this could be the correct John Edwards. Worcester (County, MD) is south of Dorchester Co on the Eastern Shore, near Delaware. I wish I could tell you where he was located in 1870. So far I haven't found him on that census. Hope this info is of some help.
Vicki Groome
York Co, PA

Hi. A minister named John Edwards married my great-great-great grandparents John Gardner and Isabella Coulter in Millersburg, Dauphin County, PA in 1843. One of their kids was my great-great grandfather John Wesley Gardner, so I thought there might be a Methodist connection, although when the family moved to Selinsgrove, PA, they attended a Lutheran church.
John Gardner was killed in the Civil War, and Isabella had to get the minister to write an affidavit about the marriage to the Pension Bureau. The letter was sent from Dorchester County, MD about 1870 or so, which is close to Delaware.
If you think that this might be a match it sure would be helpful to some of my research. Thanks!

Paul Gardner
Shoreview, MN

Methodist Church in Courtland, VA

I've been told that my g-g-grandparents, Charles Henry Stakes (b: 1861 d: 1933) and Mary Jane "Mollie" Murden Stakes (b: 1861 d: 1949), are buried in the cemetery on the grounds of a Methodist Church in Courtland, Virginia. All I was told (by a family member who attended the funerals and has been to the graves several times many years ago) is that it's a little white church and is across the street from a Baptist church. She thinks it might be either on or just off of Main St.

Any help identifying this church and it's exact location would be greatly appreciated.
