I am searching for any information on Henry L. Smith born @1833
GA, unknown parents & siblings.
I know Henry L. Smith served the entire Civil War, joining Nov 26, Columbus, Fayette Co., KY enlisted as Private in Co. A, 12th
LA. Infantry No. Louisana Cadets" and was captured May 16, 1863 in the
Battle of Bakers Creek, VA. He was on the Federal
Rolls of Prisoners of War, sent to Memphis, TN May 25, 1863.
Henry L. Smith was Received at Fort
Delaware,

Henry L. Smith was transferred to USA General Hospital, Chester, PA, July 19, 1863.
He was Exchanged at City Pt., VA Aug 20, 1863.
Nov 1863 Henry L. Smith was present in 12th Rgt, Co.A,
LA Regt again.
July 23, 1864 Henry L. Smith requested to be reduced in
Rank from Sgt. to Private.
April 26, 1865 Henry L. Smith was on

Henry was injured but made his way to Selma, Dallas Co., AL and married Elzabeth Howard
McDow on June 7, 1865, she was 20 and he was 32 years old.
They were in
Sabine Parish,
LA 1870 Census and he is listed as a Methodist
Minister, with their children and he was dead by 1876 when his wife was changing the homestead to her name.
Henry L. Smith had children:
Mary Telula
Smith b. 1866
LASamuel A. Smith b. 1868,
LA he would also be a
MinisterAnna Rebecca
Smith b. @1869
LARaleigh
Reese Smith b. @1874
LA He would also be a Methodist
Minister.
Henry L. Smith also had a brother in law, William
Reese McDow who lived with Henry L. Smiths family for a while after Henry married Elizabeth
McDow (whose parents had died) and William
Reese McDow would also become a Methodist
Minister.
But I have NEVER located parents and siblings of Henry L. Smith? Where was this man from in
GA?
I had hoped that it might be on some old records some where, listing names of the parents of Henry L. Smith?
I know that there is a Henry
Smith buried next to a
Susie Smith, & Tom
Smith, no dates on any of their headstone's at
Pleasant Hill Cemetery, 8 miles west of
Hornbeck in
Sabine Parish,
LA. That may or may not be Henry L. Smith but the headstones are very old per my cousin who saw them.
Since so many of this
Smith line became Minister's I wondered if anyone could connect to our earliest
Smith, Henry L. Smith, b. about 1833
GA? Maybe he also came from a line of Ministers?
Henry L. Smith's widow and children would move to Smith/Van
Zandt Counties area of TX by 1880. I do not locate Samuel or
Raleigh Reese Smith on the 1880 Census with ElIzabeth Howard
McDow (1)
Smith (2) Davis but they were in the area later. Samuel &
Raleigh were children in 1880 and I do not know who they were with during the Census but they were probably with relatives because Elizabeth was preparing to marry Dr. William Alexander Allen Nov 14, 1880,
Van Zandt Co., TX.
Elizabeth had briefly married John L. Davis to protect her "respectability" because John L. Davis had helped her to sell her farm and moved Elizabeth and her children from
LA to Smith/Van
Zandt County areas in TX as soon as she sold her farm. During those times a lady could not travel with a man freely. John L. Davis was their neighbor in
Sabine Parish for many years and he returned to
Sabine Parish and married again, he had been widowed about the same time as Elizabeth.
1900
Hunt Co., Justice Prec. 1, TX the youngest son of Henry L. Smith, Rollie R. Smith (he would later go by
Reese Smith) was in Holiness University. At that time
Raleigh Reese Smith was a widower and his small daughter was with his Mother-in-law, Mary Paget in

Any help on the family of Henry L. Smith would be greatly appreciated.
