The 1860
Scott Co., TN census includes John
Massengale (b abt 1814) whose occupation is listed as "Methodist Clergy". The organization that keeps the archives for the Methodist Church says they do not have a record of John
Massengale but that does not mean that he did not serve in some capacity. I was hoping to find some record, ideally an obit or something, for John who apparently died prior to 1870 as I cannot find him in that census. Is anyone familiar with the Methodist Church in the
Scott Co., TN area during that era? Where would the church have been located at that time? Is it still there? If John was not an actual clergyman, in what other capacity might he have served in order to list that as his occupation? Where might one find church records dating back to that era?
