I obtained Baptism records from St Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chicago IL. which are handwritten dating back to the late 1890's. On these records the letter "R" appears before some of the female sponsors. Does anyone know what that means? Here are examples:
Amalie Julia Unbehaun
b. Jan. 7,1896
Baptized April 10, 1896
Parents are Oswald and Louise 538 Wieland St.
Godparents are R. Amalie Rohrbach and Julia Habe
Walter Franz Unbehaun
b. March 1893,
baptized Oct 29, 1893
Parents are Oswald and Louise 538 Wieland St
Godparent R. Bertha Eckebricht
Catharine Louise Unbehaun
b. Feb. 7,1888
Parents are Oswald and Louise
Baptized July 17,1888
Godparent R. Katharine Wetzel
Thanks for any insight as to what the "R" means.
