Surnames:
I am researching a family in the early-mid 1800s in Russian Poland, and their surname most often shows up as two: Osin'ski "vel" Klonoraj'ski (or the other way around).
I know that "vel" means "also known as," but I have no idea WHY this would have been done. Any ideas?
