As it appears you have just started this phase of your investigation, I trust you will be interested to learn that there are a couple citations for Hugh HARTLEY in the LDS listings.
http://www.familysearch.org

Firstly, a confirmation of his marriage on 03 MAY 1814 in Bakewell, Derby, England, with his spouse listed as Elizabeth PROLEAN. The information is take from the Bishop’s transcripts for Bakewell, Buxton, Sheldon, Taddington, Monyash 1614-1883, by the Church of England, Parrish Church of Bakewell, Derbyshire, apparently with a slight difficulty regarding her name.

Secondly, a christening for Hugh HARTLEY on 15 SEP 1782 in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England, with parents Bernard HARTLEY and Mary. The source in this case is the Bishop’s transcripts 1598-1878, by the Church of England, St Gile’s Church of Pontefract, Yorkshire.

Given the presumable HARTLEY origins and the return to Pontefract, one must assume, hopefully, that the reason that the marriage occurred in Derbyshire is that this is the locality of the bride’s origin. A listing for the birth/christening of Elizabeth PRIOLEAU was not apparent, for any of several possible reasons, but that does not mean that it does not exist. To further investigate this possibility you could access the Derbyshire transcripts either directly or though the LDS film.

The question of Huguenot ancestry can be supported somewhat by the existence of the name PRIOLEAU early on in the history of the Huguenot colony in Charleston, South Carolina, USA.

This suggests a certain speculative possibility of a common ancestral origin for these two lines that may bear up to further investigation.

Thank you for your reply and suggestions the Hugh Hartley you refer to died as a young child.I have got a copy of the marriage transcription and was very interested to note that Elizabeth actually signed her name which was quite unusual for that period.I believe that Hugh did actually work in Buxton as an architect around1814-1821 since they had a child buried at Pontefract but their abode was still Buxton.
I will order the film to look for Elizabeth's birth. The Huguenot site seems interesting just had a quick look last night.

Occurences of PRIOLEAU, PRIOLOS, PRIOLOT Surnames

Hi Dorothy

Let's try to get you something a little closer to home rather than an American approved list.

PRIOLEAU appears in three volumes of the Proceedings of the Huguenot Society of GBs Proceedings. The derivations PRIOLOS and PRIOLOT appear once each.

The name also appears 19 times in the various Huguenot Society of GB publications and other Huguenot works that I have on CDRom, plus several derivations.

It also appears many times in the (French) Bulletin du Societie de l'Histoire de Protestantisme Francais and in the 1990 and 1996 editions of the Cahiers du Centre de Genealogie Protestante.

Hope this helps

Oh no, not Charleston, SC!!
From these biographies of several members of the PRIOLEAU family, it would appear that they did spend some time in England before travelling on to Charleston.

I would expect that the records you cited do, to some extent, document these same individials. The trick will be to find the one(s) that stayed in England.

Suggestions for PRIOLEAU Research

Out of your depth? Nonsense!
If you can look up an LDS film, then you can take a look at some of the Quarto Series information which is also on film. The real problem is that you are technically still in 1814 and the information in those references may be more than a century earlier. For it to be relevant, you will probably need the first name of an ancestor several generations prior to your Elizabeth, but methodical investigation may well get you there.
As it happens, the Charleston PRIOLEAUs travelled by way of England and their biographies can be found here.
http://199.4.147.11/gen/Prioleau.htm
They should be included in the prior references, but we also know that they left England, whereas your ancestor, if all this hypothesising is correct, did not.
If this is your direct ancestry, you should definitely press ahead and see where the path leads.

KA

Dorothy

I would suggest that you subscribe to the Huguenot List at Huguenot-L@rootsweb.com of which I'm the list owner.

People there interested in PROILEAU and their lives and work in France and the US.

By the way, rather than wait weeks for the Quarto Series on film, I can copy and send them all to you in days and also the French references which are not available from the LDS.

Hi Dorothy

Email me privately and I can arrange to send you the material.

I'll be in the Huguenot Library next week and there is a book on the family there plus there ahouls be a pedigree in the Wagner collection, I'll get details for you also.

Incidentally, the Library is closed to the public still and until the new Librarian is appointed, its only a few Council Members of the Society allowed in so there are some advantages of being on the Council there.

Regards

Tony
