Any information on the surname DELANDRE/DE Landre of South Kilkenny (Ballinlaw Ferry area) or/and Waterford City, Ireland, would be appreciated, except those entries in 'Griffith's Valuation', which I already have. Thank you.

Hi Sean

Neither of the variations on the name come up on the Hug Socs records of the Huguenot Churches or the Portarlington Veterans lists.

You could try to get hold of a copy of Grace Lawless Lees book 'The Huguenots in Ireland which may help you'

Regards

Tony Fuller

Thanks for Info

I have a copy of Grace Lawless Lee's book "The Huguenot Settlements in Ireland". It does not have any De Landre families in it but it does have several mentions of a De Lalande family, associated with Portarlington, Dublin and London.

I can give you details if you want them.

If it turns out you are looking for de la Lande or de Lalande (also d'Aulnis de la Lande) from Portarlington and Dublin, I have information.

Am uncertain if there is a connection or not with DeLandre (Waterford City and South Kilkenny). My late wife's paternal grandmother was a DeLandre from the South Kilkenny area (died early 1900's). Has your Portarlington name any Waterford connections. Some think these names are Huguenot. The name appears to have evolved now to Delanders in Waterford City.

Barbara, I DO hope I acknowledged that email of yours . . . I was recovering from a bad fall for almost 4 months at the time?

No problem, Sean. I suppose you have you seen Ann Bender's message of 9th Nov re the DELALANDE family. I imagine now that that name is of a distinctly different famil from yours. I thought differently at first because one of my Huguenot families in Ireland was called Delahay, Dulahay, Dellahay, De Hays, Hayes, and other variants so I thought it might be the same with yours.

Hi Sean

It looks as though the change in names has come up trumps - there are 110 references in 21 volumes of the Huguenot Society's Quarto series to LALANDE, a large number of which are references to the Williamite soldiery, the majority of which are in Portarlington, a centre for them after they retired.

There are also a number of references to denizations and naturalization papers for Williamite soldiers who then went on to settle in Ireland.

I think that you have a lot of revolving names here where the names were changed because they were written phonetically.

Hope this helps

Tony Fuller
