My name is Magan Evans. My grandfather was Ernest "Bud" Evans AKA Dennis Farmer. His father was Will Farmer AKA William Evans. I, to, am having trouble trying to figure this out. From what I've been told, my grandfather told my uncle, that Will's dad, Craton Evans, murdered someone and was in prison, but I have never been able to confirm that. I even tried to get information from the prison, but they weren't very helpful. My uncle had tried as well and they never helped him either. Supposedly what Craton did was why Will and his siblings changed their last name to Farmer. I have not really been able to connect Will Farmer to Craton Evans. Will is a mystery. The only document that I have is a marriage certificate. All I really know is that Will died very young and that it was a mining accident. Do you know what mine it happened adn where? I've been told it was in Tennesses. As I've been looking, it seemes as though there many in that period of time.

Magan

Hi Kyle. My mother was a Shoupe and did know your grandfather Oddie Sr. Before she passed she would help me with as much family information as possible. She told stories of Oddie and his snake handling. She also spoke of how he had to evade the authorities at times. It seems that not everyone understood his practices. I'm sorry but all I can offer is this brief bit of information to help you understand some piece of your grandfather. I hope it helps in some way.

After my mother died I drifted away from genealogy research and don't have much to add to my research that is posted on rootsweb.com. If you wish, you may contact me at kyphilpot@aol.com if you have any specific questions I might be able to help with.

Your cousin,

Jerry Philpot
Thanks Ralph I'd appreciate it. Her (Nancy's) grand-daughters Edith and Agnes thought she was buried up on a mountain in Stoney Creek. My mom and I have visted a lot of cemeteries in that area that are accessiable and we've had no luck. I know from experiences of growing up in southwest Va that graveyards can be truly on a moutain in the middle of the woods so we're still looking.
Also I just wanted to pass along that in the book there's a photo of Agnes Brooks(grand-daughter of Nancy) holding a serpent. I'm not sure if you know all of the individuals pictured or not.
My aunt and uncle have told me the story of attending a "meeting" in a coal camp (Roda, I think)and that their mother put them in a seperate room away from the meeting but they snuck and watched and they remember seeing Nancy holding hot coals from the stove.

Tricia and Nancy are daughters of Agnes Johnson Brooks.
Would you like to e-mail directly to me rather than using this website?
Thanks so much. Connie

Connie:

That's great. I was up in Big Stone Gap just this past May and interviewed a serpent handler named Bill Pelfrey, the son of Oscar Pelfrey, who died of a serpent bite at Big Stone Gap back in 1968.

I see that you've gotten in touch with my friend Ralph Hood. He's worked a good deal with Jimmy Morrow who probably has more information on your grandmother.

Whatever you find out from your mom and aunts, be sure to pass it along. My regular email is: williaw@hsu.edu

Keep in touch.

Paul
Yes, I have photos of your Grandma and as soon as I locate that box I will scan them and send them your way if you'd like. I'm so happy and excited to actually be talking to someone about her, it seems like for the longest time I was the only one searching for info on her. My mom doesn't remember her so I've really had to try and pry info out of other family members.

faith

Does any of the information include pictures or stories that include Grandma (Nancy) Kleinick? Somehow, I feel disrespectful calling her Nancy. She was such a gentle woman. I have vague remembrances of her. I am 58, but I don't know when she died.
Connie

Connie,

I live in Mascoutah IL, we're a military family so this is just one of many places we've lived over the years. I appologize for not having the Life magazine info right away, I realized that right after I found the info we moved and it's still packed away in a box so I will try my best to locate it in the next few days. My mom lives in Wise Va and when I go home to visit I always stop by the Wise Co Historical society to see what's new and on one trip I found a book on Snake Handling. I was so shocked & surprised to find information and pictures about Nancy in the book. My mom has it right now reading it but I'll get the name and author from her. I'm feeling a little rusty because I haven't done any genealogy is over a year.
You are correct about Agnes practicing snake handling. When I visited with them they let me make copies of some pictures of the family and in a couple of them they're handling snakes.

Only recently saw your mail. As a partial answer to your query, there are two authors who are studing and have written on the religious life of the Appalachains. Their books will be helpful..First,Howard Dorgan, Prof. at Appalachain State..several booka but "In the Hands of a Happy God" is great, and his others are also good. Second, Elder John Sparks' book, "The Roots of Appalachian Christianity" is a good account of the famous Shubal Stearns, Daniel Marshall the "Separate" Baptists and the Regulators in Appalachia. Hope this helps...Ed King
