Kim,
I'm so sorry for the late reply. I'm just now seeing this.
My grandfather was Amanda's youngest brother, Franklin, whose nickname was "Weenie". He was the custodian at Knoxville Central High School and their basketball coach for many years. He and my grandmother, Beulah Miller, had 6 children. Robert (Bob) my dad, James, Johnny, Mary Petree, George, and Lucy Hiatt. Half of our families spell it Wininger and the other half go by Winegar. No one seems to agree on the spelling. My Aunt Mary and Aunt Lucy are the only living children. Mary will be 91 next month and Lucy is in her mid-80s. Both are in rather frail health.
I've never really been sure what happened to our grandparents' parents. As I understand it, due to death or illness of their parents, my grandfather was taken in by their Uncle Robert J. "Bob" Wininger and his wife Ida, whom all of my Father's family loved. Great uncle Bob had a furniture store in Knoxville and a farm out in the country where my dad and his brothers and sisters would spend time working in the summers. I think he may have also lived with his brothers for awhile.
Sometime back in the early-mid 70s I think- I was still a kid- I went with my father to see his aunts. If I recall correctly, it was around Dandridge, TN and it was two sisters- maybe Deemie and Tilda.
My sister, Judy Goans, is really the family genealogist. She has found quite a bit of info on the Winingers. I would really love to hear about your grandmother. I read a brief biography of her in the book about snake handling. She sounded like such an incredibly generous and kind person.
