I am looking for information about
Nick N. Podovinnikoff (1911-?).
Nick was born in 1911 in the communal Doukhobor village of Spasovka, north of Veregin, Saskatchewan to
Nikolai and
Polly Podovinnikoff. His parents became disillusioned with community life and by 1918 had left the village to live and work on their own homestead land as independent farmers.
There they remained until 1923. At that time, grain prices had bottomed out following the post-war recession. At the time they and several other Independent Doukhobors made the fateful decision to migrate stateside to
California, where others of their co-religionists had preceded them. They left seeking economic opportunity and a warmer climate.
Nick, his parents and two siblings settled in Bakersfield Township,
Kern County California in 1923. There, his father obtained work as a driver and labourer. Some nine other Independent Doukhobor families had previously settled there. The Podovinnikoffs and these other families appear living there in the 1930 US Federal Census.
Any further information on Nick's whereabouts and family in
California from 1930 onward would be very much appreciated. All leads welcomed.
Best Regards,
Jon
