Missing Shiplists

Lists of Doukhobor immigrants (other than ship passenger lists) may have been compiled in 1899 and sent to England.

On page 263 of the book, "Sergej Tolstoy and the Doukhobors: A Journey to Canada" (A. Donskov, ed., Ottawa: University of Ottawa, 1998) Tolstoy writes that "lists of the emigrants must be sent to England". On page 261 Tolstoy also writes that "I am working on translating the lists of the Elizavetpol Doukhobors into English; the son of the director of the South Russian Bank, an S. Muromov, has undertaken to help me". These passages were written in December 1898.

There is no indication whether the above lists were ever sent. However, it is possible that they still exist, archived somewhere in England among the papers of Aylmer Maude, Vladimir Chertkov, the Purleigh colonists or the Society of Friends (Quakers). These lists may contain detailed genealogical information that might compensate for the missing Canadian ship lists. Further investigation of this matter deserves to be undertaken.

For a special discussion of Doukhobor ship passenger lists (1898-1926) see my upcoming two-part series in ISKRA magazine this September and October.

To the great disappointment of many, the Ships Manifest for S.S. Lake Huron the first shipload of Doukhobors is
missing from the Department of Interior records. It is believed to have been accidentally destroyed in Winnipeg

I have not seen any such lists among the Aylmer Maude papers in my posession. I have recently scanned through some 6000 sheets of photocopied papers (the originals of which are held by the Brotherton Library in Leeds) and did not see them there. But I do not have all the papers here.

Roderick,

Thank you very much for undertaking to review the Aylmer Maude papers in your posession, in the off-chance that the missing shiplists might have been included. Much appreciated. Would it be worthwhile contacting the Brotherton Library in Leeds to ask them to review their records as well?

I'd be quite interested to know if you are a direct descendant of Aylmer Maude, who greatly assisted the Doukhobors in their migration and settlement in Canada from Russia.

Best Regards,

Jon Kalmakoff

Thankfully I didn't have to go out of my way to review the papers - as I have been looking through them anyway.

I believe I have copies of the vast majority of the papers held by the Brotherton - but not all of them. It could be worth checking with them - though I must say, I have not heard of these shipping lists and my guess is they are not in the collection.

Yes, Aylmer Maude was my father's father's father. I am very interested in finding out all I can about his involvement with the migration etc as part of my general research into his life. I have read his book on the subject, but am eager to find any other sources of information. Of course, Aylmer's wife, my great grandmother, was also involved. It was her who translated 'Resurrection' into English to raise funds for the migration and resetlement.

I do believe you and I have been in e-mail contact before - something over a year ago. Unless it is another person with the same name.

Very warmest greetings to you.

Hi Roderic,

Indeed, I do recall our correspondence now. I'm glad to hear that you are still actively researching the life and times of your great-grandfather Aylmer Maude. I have replied in more detail to your other posting, in which you request information, assistance and leads with respect to further information.

I had also been in contact with the Friends Library in London - they had reviewed their files thoroughly and confirmed that while they did have copies of records relating to the Friends' involvement in the Doukhobor immigration in 1899, they did not have any copies of ship passenger lists.

Best Regards,

Jon
