I can confirm that prior to 1974, your family name was indeed Shlakoff, and prior to 1899, Shlyakhov.

On June 27, 1974, a John Edward and Pauline Edith Shlakoff of Vancouver, British Columbia applied to change their surname to Slaco. Perhaps this is your family.

I do know of a Shlakoff family that was born and raised in Glade B.C.

Bill Shlakoff, children are Frank Jim and Ken, Ken is good friends with my oldest brother. Bill's mother also had a child out of wedlock the half brother is Gaston Parkin fromGlade also, I was once married to his youngest daughter.

The Shlakoff's buried in Glade are:

Tom was married to Mary February 7 1923 in Glade

I remember as a young girl being related to Shlakoff's on my moms side of the family-Verigin- but not sure exactly how. The Shlakoff's used to go to school in Kamsack, and as I remember the youngest boy had drowned around Kamsack. I used to hang around with two of the sons, Raymond and Doug, probably around 1983. About that time they moved to Fort Quapelle sk. and that's the last I seen of them. Sorry, but I cannot remember the parents' name.

I feel compelled to make a few corrections to Kelly's post.

I am a Shlakoff, the oldest daughter of Bill and Marie Shlakoff from Glade. Bill died in 2004, Marie lives in Castlegar.

Their children are Nadine, Harry (deceased), Frank, Christine, Ken, Jim and Debbie.

Bill's mother (my grandmother, Mary nee Chernenkoff) did not have a child out of wedlock rather my grandfather fathered a child with her sister, Polly. He (Gaston) was adopted by the Parkins (Ignat and Aprosia sp??)

The Shlakoffs also buried in Glade are:

Shlakoff is my husband's surname. We live in Castlegar and have many relatives here.

The parents names are George and Mary (Deceased). George relocated from Fort Quapelle, Sask. to Regina, Sask. and currently lives there. The oldest daughters name is Terry - who is married to Ken Sleeva. They also reside in Regina, Sask. George seems to have a lot of background information on the family history.
