Hello from North Carolina,

I have relatives who were members of this church. You posted a picture of Corbin Boyd. He is my 3rd great grandfather. Are you able to email me a copy of the photo? I am not a paid member and can't access the hint to view the photo.

tonyalynette@hotmail.com

Thank you,
Tonya Boyd Woods

Has anyone done any research for records from St Michael's Ukrainian Church in Yonkers, NY.

The church used to be on Chestnut St in Yonkers and has since moved to Shonnard Place. I am not sure if they are the same parishes.

Does anyone know where their records are kept?

Thanks Dan Kocur

"major" in church records

In the handwritten Ontario church records, the term "major" is used to describe a son, as in "the major son of so-and-so." I thought it would be the eldest, but that's not the case. Someone out there knows. Thanks

Major son of so and so means legal age, which was usually over 21, and minor son is usually under 21. For catholic marrige, if the child is a minor, there is often a note that the consent of the guardian was obtained, such as father, mother or step-father, etc. Sometimes the consent is noted on a separate sheet.

I was going through some church records from mid 1870's. The records are in German and for two years, the following symbols are used with the baptism records. The symbols look like B m and f. One of these symbols is shown with each baptism. Does anyone know what they mean?

The thread's a bit old now but in case others stumble across it via Google I thought I ought to add the following.

In many cases it was a matter of financial circumstances. Working class families found it hard enough to find the money over the year to pay for a decent family get together meal at Christmas let alone fund another for a wedding so combining the two was a sensible way round the problem.

Source: my step mother whose parents married on Christmas day.
When a person moved from one parish to another, would they have to present any sort of documentation to the local parish church and would the church record this in any sort of record such as the kirk session minutes? I'm trying to track down where a male ancestor came from and I was wondering if there was a chance of anything appearing in the session minutes.

Many thanks
Lyndsay

I have been learning family history on my own for 20 years now but I have never heard the answer to my question. When there is a cross symbol after a name in a church record (or other record) does it always mean that the person died? Is there a name for this symbol? It is one of those things that I think everyone thinks that everyone knows. But I do not.

You don't say why you want to contact a church or where the church is located, so it's difficult to be specific.

If you are asking for help with family research, keep in mind that the task is not a priority for most churches and many churches don't have the personnel or the time to perform any type of research. You could write a very polite letter detailing exactly what information you're seeking and include a donation to the church and a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Good luck!

I looked at images of the actual registers and they are duplicate entries. My guess is that the minister went from church to church and the baptism simply got duplicated on each church register by accident.

A search of the churches on GENUKI wasn't definitive. Try posting on the Middlesex mailing list (http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/ENG/Middlesex_...) for information about these churches and why the same baptism would have appeared on three church registers.

Good luck!

An example is Mary Ann Long, baptised 13 Jun 1880. 3 records list her baptism in St James the Great, St Philip and Holy trinity all in Bethnal Green, London.
Would the baptism be listed in all 3 church records as a matter of course. Its the first time I have come accross this.

Thanks

Andy

The parish records for Crnomelj are kept at the archives of the Archbishopric in Ljubjlana. Some of them are available through the LDS. There are researchers on-line who will look these up for you. I don't have names for them.

Catholic churches

does anyone know if churches in general keep any records of marriages or anything? i have run into kind of a dead end on 2 people, and i know they both belonged to a catholic church in the area. the people in question are Frank (1858-1918) and Augustina Maschari (1866-1936). i have found census records with them and their children, and i know they were both born in italy. they arrived to the US separately when they were young. i have not been able to find any marriage record for them, and i can't find anything telling me who their parents were. i have found some records listing Augustina as a parent for the children being born, but they all have her maiden name spelled different. i was thinking that maybe the catholic church they belonged to in sandusky, ohio may be of some help. has anyone gone to a church for info?

According to the Latin Forenames page on the ScotlandsPeople.gov site, James is Jabus, Jacoba, or Jacobus.

Do a web search for "Latin forenames" or "Latin first names" for more information.

latinisation of names

In older parish records it is common to find names rendered in Latin. Sometimes the Latin is quaint to say the least.

Would anyone know if Amos could possibly be James? I'm not sure if I'm looking at two children or not. The parish records are written in fairly poor Latin and "Amos" is baptised in 1733. "James" marries 20 years later. I cannot find any further record of Amos and cannot find any mention of James's baptism.

Anyone like to speculate?

Thanks Alison

I have been informed that they hold their own records rather tightly! Thank you.

My wife is the pastor at a rural church. When churches close the records are given to another church. Near as I can tell she has records for 7 churches going back 150 years. Record keeping is not consistant as the pastors have changed, and record books have changed.
Trying to find the baptism record of a member of our congregation has consumed a weeks worth of her time. Its not just finding a copy of a certificate, it is going through ledger after ledger of names trying to decypher the script of 100 years ago.

Yes it would be great if someone in the church would volunteer to do this, but she has a hard enough time getting someone to volunteer to be literigist.

One option might be to travel to the church and ask if you could look through their records yourself.

Admin note: Where's Pottsville? Remember that these boards are used by people from all over the world, so it's important to be specific about locations.

Usually libraries have websites with contact phone numbers and/or email addresses. Try contacting the library that way to find out if the records are available.

Good luck!
