I have come across a symbol on a parish register entry for a marriage. The Father of the groom has a different surname to the groom and next to this name is a symbol. It is an x with dots in the lower three sections of the x Suggestions please??

I think it may be a sign that the entry has been amended. Could you post a picture?

I know it has been amended, as it is clear from the attached image. The first surname was Lane, the one the groom put as his surname, but this has been crossed out and Jarvis put in it's place. Perhaps Lane was his step father and he had used his surname for some time? I had just hoped the symbol might give more of a clue, but thanks for your comment.
