My wife is the pastor at a rural church. When churches close the records are given to another church. Near as I can tell she has records for 7 churches going back 150 years. Record keeping is not consistant as the pastors have changed, and record books have changed.
Trying to find the baptism record of a member of our congregation has consumed a weeks worth of her time. Its not just finding a copy of a certificate, it is going through ledger after ledger of names trying to decypher the script of 100 years ago.
Yes it would be great if someone in the church would volunteer to do this, but she has a hard enough time getting someone to volunteer to be literigist.
One option might be to travel to the church and ask if you could look through their records yourself.
