Hi Mary
Recently the book "Pamatnik" Memorial of Czech Protestant Congregations in the United States was transcribed to English. There is much history about the early church in Ely Iowa. You can find it on the csgi.org website.
This book was compiled by Vilem Siller aclav Prucha and R.M. De Castello in 1900, and recently was transcribed by Jan Dus from Policka, Czech Republic.

Do you have any idea who I might contact and get inside the church? I would love to see what it looks like. The outside is so unchanged and I suspect the inside might be much the same as well. I know that the lodge has it now but don't how how/who to contact. I doubt that they would mind if we looked inside, but would need to ask first.

My Dad was born in 1913. I was born in 1943. I did find my Mother and Dad in the 1940 census both living in Wichita and in the same boarding house. Bob Troxel and my Dad were roommates as well as my Mother and her sister both from Louisiana. No surprise, but Bob married my Mom's sister and no surprise but my Mother and Dad were married. Do you think that the census would tell which house they were living in 1913 with an address. The oldest brother Claude was born in 1909 also in Conway Springs.

How interesting about Michelle. I will certainly have to google her.

I don't know off the top of my head about the house, but I would suppose you might be able to get that from Sumner County Census info...seeing what home the Troxel family resided in during that time. What year was your dad born? I would think if it were 1940 or earlier, you would be in luck.

I'll try to send the files to your email address. Lmk if yo get them.

My home email is raggs@cox.net. I think it should work, but if not, try my husband's email at jcolley1@cox.net. It's SO neat that you remember Minnie. She was such a grand lady. Also, her great-granddaughter is Michelle Troxel the top fuel drag racer. She has driven a top fuel dragster and then changed to a funny car. Somehow, I can't see Minnie at a drag race, but Mike, Bob's son drove one and Melanie was practically born at the track. If you Google "Michelle Troxel" or "Mike Troxel", you can usually find some articles. Do you have any information about how I could find out where my Dad was born? I think it was in a house on the park street but have no way to verify. I checked his older brother's birth certificate and it just said Conway Springs so I imagine my Dad's would say the same -- no address.

So nice to hear from you. I was born and raised in Conway Springs and still have relatives there are well. I was a member of The Brethern Church in Conway as a young child, until it disbanded in the 1960's. I remember Minnie as she was a member of the church. I am sure Robert was around too.
I've attached the files and pictures I have. Enjoy!

I would love to receive those scans and the church history. My father was born in Conway Springs, KS and lived there with his family for several years before moving to Milton. My father was Karl Virgil Wise, son of John & Virgie Wise, grandson of David Mathias Wise and great-grandson of Elder John Wise who preached in this church I believe. Also Robert Troxel, sone of Minnie & Jacob Troxel went to this church. Robert Troxel and my father were roomates in Wichita where they met and married sisters. Many of my relatives are buried in Conway Springs cemetery.

Wow!! 200 years plus later. If you give me your e-mail address, I'll send you the stories. I'm just not willing to publish them here yet. Are you a Brethren? I'm very curious if this story is really handed down the generations in the Brethren church or maybe even among Morrison's Covers people. That's amazing. There are several stories and i have collected them, but i want to know their genesis in oral or other history. Can you help find out if anyone knows their genesis? More later.

Doesn't surprise me about no records.

Have you heard tell of the stories about John Brumbaugh's father, Johann Jacob, and George Washington?
Unfortunately, the Clover Creek Church of the Brethren kept no records for the early years. My ancestor Daniel Kensinger married John Brumbaugh's daughter Anna Maria, and they settled in the area that would become Martinsburg in the 1780s. Supposedly Daniel's father Abraham entered the Cove with a group of Brethren in 1755, but didn't settle permanently, just staked a "Tomahawk claim".
Ken

I, too, am researching these counties for Brethren ancestors. My ancestor was Johann Jacob Brumbaugh (ca 1726-1799) who lived mainly in Washington county, Maryland, but from 1780s bought and speculated in land tracts in Morrison's Cove. He settled his son John Brumbaugh (1768-1829) and his daughter Mary Elizabeth Brumbaugh Ullery (1767-18?? aft 1806), married to Elder Samuel Ullery, on tracts of land that he purchased in the areas of Enterprise or Martinsburg in Morrison's Cove. All were members of the Brethren sect. I would love to find any 1700s era or even early 1800s era sources of documents or other traces of the Brethren in that area.

I have a couple of photographs from the old Brethren Church in Conway Springs, Kansas I can scan and share with those that desire. I also have a hand-written history of the Brethren Church in Conway Springs, dated August 16, 1936. My family has owned a home on Church Street for many decades and my family ties with the chuch go back 3 generations. I was a member of the church until it dis-banded in 1966. The church still stands today but is now used my the Masons.

Isaac Wright and Rhoda (Toney) Wright in Marion Co. 1850

My g-grandfather was United Brethren preacher Isaac J. Wright. He was born in Indiana in 1818. He married Rhoda Toney, daughter of William Toney, in Dixon, Preble Co. IN in May 1842. In 1849 his family and some of the Toney family left Preble for the west. In 1850 we find him in Mason Co. Illinois. Rhoda had given birth to her second son, third child, Isaac Jesse Wright, William Toney's brother, Jesse Toney and is in nearby Fulton Co., with his family. Rhoda does not appear in the 1850 Census, but another woman, Rebecca Wright is with Isaac and Rhoda's three children. Rebecca could be Rev. Wright's sister or another member of the Wright family. The census is taken in Nov. 1850 and the new baby is one year old. Did Rhoda died giving birth to Isaac Jr.? Isaac and Rhoda are both mentioned in Merle C. Rummaels book on the Toney Family, but I think the date of her marriage to Rev. Wright is switched with her death date.

In 1855 we find Isaac in Richland Co. WI, without the three children. Between 1855 and 1860 he married Catherine Miller, daughter of Henry Miller (b:1801) and grandaughter of Henry Miller Sr. (b: 1759). In the Richman Co. 1860 Census Catherine Miller has also died and Rev. Wright is living alone with five childrem, three by Rhoda and two (Martha Jane Wright and my grandfather John Calvin Wright). Catherine and her father, Henry, both died in betweem 1858 and 1859. In 1862 Rev. Wright married Catherine's sister, Martha Miller. Rev. Wright built a Uniter Brethren church on his Byrd Creek property in Richwood, Richland Co. WI. There is also a small cemetery on the property in which Isaac and Rhoda's first child, William Wright, is buried. A GAR membership was formed after the Civil War and named after William Wright.

Rhoda's father, William Toney, is living near Rev. Wright in Scott, Crawford Co. WI. He raised little Isaac Wright, whom moved in with him when Rev. Wright joined the Union Army for a short time in 1863. Isaac Jr. died in 1872 and is buried in Zion Cemetery in Crawford Co. WI.

I am interested in finding out where Rhoda is buried and any info on Rev. Wright's parents. 1880 Census says his fater was born in NC and his mother in VA. Rev. Wright and family spent time in Greenville TN from 1874 to 1879. I believe he had a half brother living there. The family returned to WI in 1880. John Calvin Wright became a doctor after attending Rush Medical School.

Bohemian-Moravian Brethern Church

My g grandparents VACLAV AND KATRINA DLOUHY came to Iowa in 1867 where they were members of the Bohemian- Moravian Brethern church formed in Ely, Iowa by immigrants from the POLICKA AND CHRUDIM areas of Bohemia. [ A JOHN DLOUHY who may have been a brother came in 1855, about the same time as the church founders[Filipi, Jilek, Janko, Lorenc and Zvacek].
I have two questions:
1. Does anyone know of a book [in English] that tells the history of the Brethern in Bohemia and Moravia? [ not the Moravian church in Pennsylvania]
2. Although I realize that Dlouhy is a common name, can anyone help me with Dlouhy emmigrants from the Chrudim and Policka areas [since this was the area most of their neighbors in Iowa came from]. The Dlouhy message board isn't very active.
THANKS FOR ANY HELP. Mary

I am trying to locate the Clark family who may have been part of the Brethren Community in Hampshire County before relocating to Washington County, Tennessee. Jacob Clark was born August 23, 1823, probably in Hampshire county, but married (Sarah Bowman, daughter of Deacon Joseph Bowman) in 1851 in Tennessee. I would appreciate any possible Clark or Bowman information.

I was wondering if you have found any way to access the records of the United Brethren Church Records online? I have been trying to find these records for a very long time. My husband's great grandfather was a United Brethren Pastor and teacher at Philomath College in Oregon. His name was William Stewart and died on 25 Mar 1928 in Gold Beach, Oregon, buried Old Pioneer Cemetery in Gold Beach, Oregon. We have been to Philomath College but they don't have any records left there. They told us at Philomath that the United Methodist had the records but when contacted they said no. Have you had any luck finding them?
Sharon Stewart
He gave his son, my Grandfather, the middle name of Otterbein, so I am assuming that he was part of the United Brethren Church. He moved to Columbia County, Washington, in 1883, later to Umatilla, Oregon, and ended up in Mount Vernon, Washington, in the Methodist Church.

He married Rose Modlin in Clinton County, Indiana in 1878.
