Icame upon your post, and did a quick search on the names you listed and alot came up. But you will tend to get a better response if you post to the surname board. (Which I see you have typically done, so this may just have been a mistake posting this on the US GenWeb message board?)

Any how after a quick search on the name Thomas L Rohlik, several census came up and death records. Are you looking for something specific?
Thanks for the response Brynne. That makes much more sense than some of the other stories I've heard. I appreciate the clarification.

Yes, you're correct about my reference to the county pages. I click the link on the genweb states page, and the county pages are there, without any information attached to the links.

In one instance, the 'cemetery transcript project' pages are gone also.

It tends to get a little frustrating. I'll try the site you suggested. Thanks again for your time!
Ann

Oh, I forgot to add, RootsWeb does not allow it's pages to be used as a "redirect", so if a county host moves to another host and places a "This page has moved" notice on the old RootsWeb-hosted site, RootsWeb can and has taken them down....

When you say "County pages" are you referring to GenWeb county pages? If so, the best method to access them is via the state sites which can all be reached from the USGenWeb homepage:
http://www.usgenweb.org/

Many of the GenWeb county pages have moved off RootsWeb last year due to the decision by RootsWeb (or rather, their owner, The Generations Network) to add banners to all hosted pages/sites and for which web-masters have no control. This was in direct contrast to the original pledge to GenWeb.

Another site you may consider visiting is Genealogy Trails
http://genealogytrails.com/
which only went national about 2 years ago, although the original Illinois Trails has been around for several years. GenTrails is dedicated to ongoing transcription projects, so expect to see new data added regularly.

County pages, broken links, private sites?

I've been away from genealogy for awhile, and trying to figure out what's going on.

Recently found some county pages and some project pages, (like counties in the cemetery transcript project), that look very nice, but all the buttons for resources, maps, information, etc., are broken links or lead to a blank page.

I was told on another site they were moved to allegedly 'protect' free genealogy. If that's true, then why isn't there at least an "update" on the page with a notation about where people can access the new "private" website? I've found a couple that did, most dont', and Googling isn't finding some of them.

Another question..Who makes/made the decision to move the information? More than one person has provided information and research to those pages so it would be easily accessible here, all in place....not hidden somewhere else.

Asking out of curiosity and concern, No intentional disrespect for people's choices.

With all due respect the Searcy Co Arkansas web site, that shows the GENWEB logos and brings one to this site charges for cemeteries, marriages and census records.
All one has to do is visit the site and they too can download the order form to order this information that is to be found no where on the site. The information is for sale by OOCS Researchers and that is the only way to obtain any anformation at that site.
Deanna Grissom

I've been working on the cemetery site on the genweb Blount Co site this weekend. I need some in-put. I've been trying to place the cemeteries on a map and started making some smaller ones for each cemetery. Would it be helpful to have these or am I wasting my time. I've put one on the Cemetery Index page by Alldredge for you to see and then I've put one on the Alldredge page when you click on the Alldredge link. Which is better or is either one needed? Thanks so much for your input. You can e-mail me from the link on the bottom of the cemetery page if you like.

KSGenWeb

What has happened to the KSGenWeb? The majority of the counties have not been updated for over a year or more. Several have not been updated since 2001. Several of them have bad links. Several have their copyrights still set at 2004 or as far back as 2001. The State Coordinator is also County Coordinator for several of the Counties and their's is the worst in not following by-laws. Clearly they need volunteers, but when you do volunteer neither the Orphan County person or the State Coordinators bother to respond. I have tried for 2 years!!! I wonder why the USGenWeb allows this to continue to go on. If Kansas is this bad what are the other's like. Grant you some States are REALLY GREAT!!!
Why doen't USGenWeb monitor these States like Kansas? Realizing everyone is a volunteer, but if you cannot give the time then you shouldn't volunteer or be allowed to continue as a volunteer. Who's in charge?

I'm not going to debate this with you; I invite EVERYONE to visit the Searcy Co ARGenWeb site at

http://www.rootsweb.com/~arsearcy

and make up your own mind!

The links to "Publications for Sale" are just that- links to folks/businesses who sell books which contain information researchers might want or need. JUST LIKE A BOOKSTORE! No where do I encourage folks to buy anything- it's just one more resource for researchers. Not every bit of information of value to researchers can be found in county records- some can be found in books.

If you are unhappy with the amount of information found online, then I would heartily suggest that you volunteer to transcribe some records. I would LOVE to put more information online, and as you can see, I do give credit to those folks who help out. The USGenWeb is a VOLUNTEER effort; we coordinators do as much as we possibly can, and welcome & encourage folks to help out as much as THEY can.

Deanne, you must be confusing the Searcy Co USGenWeb website with another. I am the coordinator for the Searcy Co ARGenWeb website, and I can assure you that NOTHING is charged for (hey, I even write the webpages myself!). The USGenWeb websites are hosted and maintained by volunteers. Any records found on the pages are either transcribed by the county coordinator, or by volunteers. Now, some counties may have links to pages which do charge (I don't believe that I have any such links on the Searcy page, though), but I'm certain that is just a service to the public.
The url to the Searcy Co USGenWeb website is:

www.rootsweb.com/~arsearcy

Check it out for yourself~

Cathy Leonard
