1870 Census, Odd Household arrangement question

In searching the 1870 census for Salisbury Township, Chariton County Missouri for my Great Great Grandfather William Marion Smith I came across something I consider an atypical enumeration for my family. They are found on Page one, and are the first household enumerated.

persons listed:

Vandiver, Della, 8 years old
Holliday, Richard, 30 years old, Teacher
Barnes, Richard, 72 years old, Farmer, 2100 personal
Estate.
Smith, William, 37 years old, Farmer, 3000 real
estate value, 500 personal estate.
Smith, Jane, 24yrs old, Keeping House.
Smith, Elmer, 4yrs old
So, My question is... Who are all of these people that are not Smith's? Why did they choose to enumerate a child first? In the position I would normally see the Head of Household in? The only thing I know for Certain, is that none of the 1st three people are related to my Great Great Grandfather, Nor his wife.
Thanks if you have any suggestions or ideas
I was looking through the 1860 census for Boonville, MO and came across several "do" under occupations. I'm assuming this means "ditto" as it appears under the previous line for "farm laborer" or "merchant." Does anyone know if that's a correct assumption?
Thanks.

Cathy

Sure, my E-mail is ( gloluqo1@yahoo.com ). How old are you now? As I understand it's been quite a few years you have been out of touch. It is so sad, I feel that we as families should be more united then lose our history of our blood kin. i also found out my husband had 2 Half sisters, Lupe & Irene, Irene had 2 daughters, Flora & Sally. Sally had children, & I have got in contact with 1 son. He was in the service, married now, lives around Covina I belive. In all there are 6 or 7 kids of Sally. Flora & Sally have passed away. Flora has One son named John Gonzales. But don't know where he is. All this started with my father-law & my mother -in law with me in 1945, when I married their son Joe L. Olivas. The rest is history.

I hope we can all be a family again. I am sorry Joe had passed away. My daughter's birthday is June 25.

Where it asks where her father was from it says "India" and has OC written above both the country and the native language (English).

I have done some searching and found a lot of people guessing as to what the abbreviation means, but I haven't found anything concrete.
I've often found that children who are listed as 'son' or 'daughter' are too young to be that of the head of household. Could they be grandchildren, as they are often listed under the name of an adult child? The only information I've found is the official position that the relationship shown is that to the head of household. Thanks.

How would you attach an 1820 US Census to an unamed child?

I'm trying to create documentation for individuals using the various Census and Vital records available on Ancestry.com. I'm not sure what to do when I get to the 1820, 1830, and 1840 Census.

Let's say I find a daughter born in 1818 and lives with her parents until 1841. I find the 1820, 1830, and 1840 Census of her father. Would you attach the Census record to the daughter even though the record name is indexed as the father's name?

Not necessarily. On one census record, my grandfather wasn't related to the family he was counted with at all and it was a confusing task to figure out why he was there. We then realized he was down the street from his home playing with the neighborhood kids when the enumerator came by. They used my grandfather's real surname and it looked odd on the census but that's the explanation we came up with.

Only 1940 will be added next year. 1950 census is not scheduled for release until 2022. 72 years must pass between the year a census is collected and the year the details are released to the general public.

The statute controlling the length of time could be changed, however due to privacy concerns it is more likely that any change would be to make the release time longer so as not to release private information about people who are still living.
According to the National Archives and Records Administration the 1940 and later censuses are not available for public use due to a statutory 72-year restriction on access for privacy reasons. (92 Stat. 915; Public Law 95-416; October 5, 1978).

It is scheduled to be released next year, 2012 (1940 + 72 statutory wait = 2012)

Why does Ancestry have 1790 census backwards?

The sequence of age ranges for males for the 1790 U.S. census is males 16 and over, males under 16. However, I just noticed that Ancestry shows the first two backwards! Ancestry has males under 16, then males 16 and over. So, I have been saving the age-range counts in this sequence, while under the belief that I am saving the numbers in the correct sequence. I'll have to go thru and change ALL the ones that I've saved so far.
WHY DOES ANCESTRY.COM DO IT BACKWARDS????????
