Hi, this board is no good for you. This board is for the FreeCEN project which only concerns itself with transcribing the 19th century England/Wales/Scotland census and putting the transcriptions online for free.

If your ancestors are "Russian Germans", I suggest you try Poland boards, as prior to WW1, Poland did not exist as a state in its own right. Most of present-day Poland was control by either Prussia/Germany and Russia.

The other suggestion would be to logon to FamilySearch.org and look at the Germany/Poland/Russia/Prussia research guides.

Good luck in your research.

Warmest regards,

Terry Waters-Marsh

FreeCEN Coordinator for England

FreeCEN County Coordinator for Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cheshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hertfordshire, Huntingdonshire, London, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, Somerset (1891 only), Warwickshire, Wiltshire, Worcestershire.

Visit the FreeCEN website at http://www.freecen.org.uk

Visit the Somerset website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~somtcen

Visit the Warwickshire website at http://www.hunimex.com/warwick/freecens/1861/index_1861.html

Visit the Wiltshire website at http://www.pope-genealogy.me.uk/nwop.htm

Visit the Worcestershire website at http://www.hunimex.com/warwick/wo-a-p.html

OPC for Avebury, Wiltshire

General census info http://www.british-genealogy.com/resources/census/index.htm

"To forget one's ancestors is to be a brook without a source, a tree without a root" (Chinese Proverb)
Okay, no idea where to post this, but this looks like the best place.

My great-grandparents, the Hermans, came from a place in Russia called Shaefer. They're called "Germans from Russia," and I can't find ANYTHING on Shaefer. I want to know more about Shaefer to understand why my great-grandparents might have left (and why it exists in the first place!)

Hi Trish,

Your request has come to the wrong message board. The FreeCEN project mailing list is for enquiries to do with the FreeCEN census project. The information you seek is pre-census (and pre-civil registration) and therefore you will not find it here. Given what you are looking for is pre-civil registration (which began 1837 in England and Wales and, from memory, in 1855 in Scotland), I suggest you visit an LDS Family History Centre and see if the LDS have films of parish registers for Hobkirk, Roxburghshire. If they do, that would probably be your best bet.

Terry Waters-Marsh
England Coordinator
FreeCEN Project

Someelse could provide a Freecen wincc that is compatible . it appears only to be the zipping at the end and the unzipping at the beginning. the bit at the beginning works under protest the bit at the end fails altogether
any helpful thoughts or past experience of this problem

My Grandmother was Maude Mary Hill. She was born in Pillaton, Cornwall, England in 1882. She married a James Gregg Lane and emigrated to Australia at around 1911.

I'm not sure if this is the same person that you are seeking. Your date of 1882 was before she was born. Where is the Black Swan Hotel?

I am the FreeCEN coordinator for Buckinghamshire and I would be more than happy to assist you with transcribing the census. If you contact me at t.waters-marsh@bigpond.com, I can give you all the information to get you sailing along with the transcription. Generally, we have moved away from using wincen as it was developed for the Windows95 operating platform and later platforms do not support it as well. It does not work at all on Windows XP or Vista.

I am desperate to help transcribing 1891 census for Buckinghamshire. However I havent managed to finish the first page yet because I get so far with the procedure then wincen disappears from my pc and I cant get it back again. At first I thought I was clicking on the wrong button, but this is not the case. When I try to get back into the same file to continue transcribing, nothing happens and the wincens does not open. Help please!

I'm just starting Validation. VALDREV won't run on either of our computers because it expects a floppy drive and we don't have one. Our desktop has four card readers, and although VALDREV finds them all it says they're all invalid. The laptop has a CD drive only, but VALDREV says it has found more than one drive. It doesn't show any found drives, though, and won't run. Has anyone else had this problem? What do I do, please?

On 2 April 2005 I sent Dave Newbury my 8000 alphabetical name list of residents in Maiden Newton, Frome Vauchurch, Chilfrome, Cattistock, West Compton, Compton Valence, Wynford Eagle. At the time I was not sure whether I could continue with the project owing to the huge increase in the cost of photocopying the census pages. However, the Dorset History Centre have agreed to continue charging a small amount for copying but only for a short time (unspecified). I have sent Dave two follow up e-mails but I do not know if he even received my original list. I really do need to know whether it is worth while continuing and I would appreciate an answer from someone to tell me what the present position is.

Free Census - Wigtownshire, Scotland.

I am pleased to announce the launch of the 1851 Wigtownshire Free Census Project. This part of the larger UK FreeCEN Project - an internet-based "free-to-view" database that will enable researchers to view details of UK Censuses between the years 1841 and 1891, especially the ability to search by surname across census years and counties. I am the county co-ordinator and I am sending out an appeal for transcribers for all Wherevershire parishes.
To take part, all you need is a computer. We supply everything else including the CD and the software. This project is a global on-line venture designed for ordinary family historians, wherever they are, who would like to make a contribution to our great hobby.
If you are interested in learning more, please contact me, Ron Tapp, at ettrick@telus.net
UK FreeCEN project overview: http://www.freecen.org.uk/
Scotland FreeCEN project overview: http://www.freewebs.com/mmjeffery/index.htm
Thank you,
Ron Tapp, Wigtownshire Co-ordinator: http//www.freewebs.com/ettrick/

I am pleased to announce the launch of the 1851 Wigtownshire Free Census Project. This is part of the larger UK FreeCEN Project - an internet-based "free-to-view" database that will enable researchers to view details of UK Censuses between the years 1841 and 1891, especially the ability to search by surname across census years and counties. I am the county co-ordinator and am sending out an appeal for transcribers for all Wherevershire parishes.
To take part, all you need is a computer. We supply everything else including the CD and the software. This project is a global on-line venture designed for ordinary family historians, wherever they are,who would like to make a contribution to our great hobby.
If you are interested in learning more, please contact me, Ron Tapp, at ettrick@telus.net
UK FreeCEN project overview: http://www.freecen.org.uk/
Scotland FreeCEN project overview: http://www.freewebs.com/mmjeffery/index.htm
Thank you,
Ron Tapp, Wigtownshire Co-ordinator : http://www.freewebs.com/ettrick/
