I think it might be the Mexican-American War, 1847 is the right time frame and I've already found a few clues . I've never looked up military records before and I've learned a lot just this afternoon. He was born in 1818 so it wouldn't be the War of 1812 but I really appreciate you help.

Jefferson County Indiana Pioneers

My g g g grandfather Strawder Wesley Long was BORN in Ripley Co Indiana in 1808. One of his brothers Simeon Irvin Long, was born in Jefferson Co Indiana in 1818. They built a log cabin in the primeval forests of Jefferson Co. Where they would eat their meals but would sleep in the block house at night with all the other few settlers, to be protected from the Indians. Strawders father, Abraham Long was born in Virginia in 1774. They were very early pioneers of Kentucky. Abraham Long married Ruth Ann House in Mercer Co KY in 1798. All their children were early pioneers of Jefferson Co IN, Ripley Co IN, Cumberland KY, and I am desperate to find the parents of Abraham Long. Can anyone help me?

Returns from 1868- 1915, which include the Indian wars. There are books in the Google book search, mainly Army registers, which will sometimes list person killed.
Re: What is Pioneer Certification?

Pioneer Certificates (or similar certificates with a variety of names) are available for those people who meet the requirements given by the folks offering the certificates. If you check other postings on this board, you can see some of the types of certificates offered. For example, the Illinois State Genealogical Society offers Prairie Pioneer Certificates to those who descend by blood from a person who lived in Illinois in 1880 or before. There are three types of certificates: Prestatehood, Statehood to 1850, and from 1850 to 1880. I may be off on the exact wording for 1850. (Others readers who might be interested in a Prairie Pioneer Certificate can check that out for themselves via this message board or the ISGS website.) The PPCs are very nice and make wonderful gifts for "relatives" who descend from the same ancestor. In Illinois, information from the applications is put into book form. I have found some helpful information, because one of my very distant relatives took the time to apply for a certificate. The books are useful if you are researching maiden names of ancestors. You might not know your ancestor's maiden name but an applicant just might have the information you are seeking. My grandmother had a certificate from The Sons and Daughters of Soddies since she was born in a sod house. Many local genealogical and historical societies offer certificates for their areas as well. I was not quite sure what prompted your question. Perhaps others will give a better explanation than I. Hope this helps. Kathleen (STANFIELD) COOK

Ohio does have a pioneer program -- several of them, actually.

The Ohio Genealogical Society sponsors First Families of Ohio, which is open to OGS members who can prove their descent from someone who lived in Ohio by the end of 1820. You can find information about First Families of Ohio at http://www.ogs.org/lineage.htm

Many Chapters of the Ohio Genealogical Society also have first families or pioneer families programs. The year of settlement varies from county to county. For example, Fairfield County's program is 1820; Muskingum County is 1830. You can find a list of OGS Chapters, their addresses and websites (where applicable) at http://www.ogs.org/chap.htm.

In honor of Rochester, NY's centennial celebration, the certificates that you mention were issued to persons who could trace their ancestry to the "pioneers" of Rochester and Monroe County, those that were here before 1834. See the website below and scroll down to the Pioneer Project article. I too have one of these from my father's records...we can trace two different family lines to that time period. They did similar certificates for the 1984 sesquicentennial celebration.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrgs/hearye/v04-2.htm

Conquistadore ancestor?

Jeronimo Bacarel could have been my distant relative. I found his name by searching through
Peter Boy-Bowman's two volumes of the Indice Geobiografico de Cuarenta mil Pobladores Espanoles de America en el Siglio XVI.
17,000 names of soldiers and colonists are listed, not only Spanish conquistadors, but Italians, French, Dutch, German, Scot, Portuguese, Greek and some Irish, who served in Spanish forces. It is written entirely in Spanish.

From this source I learned that Jeronimo Bacarel was from Palermo, Sicily and arrived in Peru in 1535. I have searched the internet for more information as to his life in the New World, but have uncovered nothing. So I don't know if he was a conquistador, or colonist, scoundrel or settler.

Where should my next search begin?
The correct zip for Mattoon, Illinois is 61938. Sorry! Guess nobody from Nov. 2001 until now read the message and followed up on it. NOTE! There are zip code changes taking place in June 2004 for Springfield, IL. (I think they start today, June 26). SOOO, before writing to Springfield, check to see if the zip for the Illinois State Genealogical Society has changed. You might also want to check to see if MaryLea Degler is still the Prairie Pioneer chairperson.
