Are the bonnets these two women are wearing significant? The first photo is of an older woman with possibly a prayer book in her hand. She wears a wedding ring and the photo was taken in Glasgow around 1860-1870. The second woman wears an engagement ring and her portrait appears in the album opposite a clergyman, perhaps her fiance? Her portrait was taken in Perth, Scotland, around the same time. Was there simply a fashion at the time for this rather demanding style of head dress or could it signify a religious sect?
