I am a 5th great-grandson of Lieutenant Samuel Treat of Boston MA. Treat served in the Massachusetts troops during the Revolution at Castle Island in Boston Harbor. I have a circa 1850 daguerreotype of a pastel portrait of him that was made in the mid-1770s, and am trying to locate the original portrait. The portrait's provenance is spotty, but I do know that it was in the possession of Frances Caroline (Thayer) Loomis of Chelsea MA in the 1890s. In 1937, it was in a collection owned by Herbert R. Lawton of Boston, and was sold in April of that year to the antique firm of Ginsberg & Levy in New York. I have attached a black and white photo taken by Ira W. Martin for the Frick Art Reference Library at the time the portrait was sold in 1937. I am grateful for any assistance.
