Appropriate use of photos submitted by others

First let me say I have only been on Ancestry.com for one week but I have a beginner's question.

I have found many photographs generously shared by others which overlap into my tree. Many of these photos were scanned at a low DPI and only fill a small portion of the page submitted. I have taken these photos, cropped them so the empty space on the page is eliminated. I also have taken a few to Photoshop to restore cracks, exposure, folds and spots.

My question is if I alter the photo then it shows the photo is submitted by me and does not list the original submitter of the photo. This meets my needs but I do not want to offend the original submitter in case they see my tree. I djust want to improve/restore some of the photos that I place into my tree.

Any suggestions how to alter the original photos and place into my tree without offending the original submitter would be appreciated. Is there any way to retain the original submitters name as the source of the photo?

Thanks,

I always say in the comment section that this photo originally came from XXXXXXXX, and that I worked on it and re uploaded it.

Good for you for wanting to credit the source. So many people just re-purpose and don't care about credits. In addition to the suggestion you got, I would write the person who supplied the original and offer your edited version.

I think cyndi is right.

In addition, you might be careful of copyright matters. This is un-likely to crop up with older pictures, but more recent ones could be a problem.

In most cases, copyright rests with whoever took the picture.

Thanks to all for the comments. I will take your advice and put a comment in the Description box that identifies the original poster and the date it was posted and the family tree it belongs to. It would also be a nice touch to contact the original poster and hopefully I can make this a part of my routine. Thanks again.
