Scanning images from books?

Does anyone have any tips for scanning photos from books?

I have a book of my family's history from the late '80s that is full of pictures I'd like to add to my tree for personal use, but when I scan them they look like this:

I can mostly remove the pixel-y look by adding a slight gaussian blur filter in photoshop, but it greatly reduces the quality and makes the picture look out of focus.


Does anyone have any better suggestions of how to fix this?
