Boyd and Vandiver
I have a simple question- If the surnames of my mother's (Elaine Rae Vandiver born Dec. 2,1943) are different on her birth certificate (Betty Boyd and Virgil Vandiver) does that mean that Betty and Virgil were not married at the time of her birth?

No. Most birth certificates ask for the mothers "maiden" name. Same with death certificates.
Some states will have a "box" for marital status, but not always.

In some states, it has a box where it asks if the child is illegitimate. On birth certificates, the mother's full maiden name has to be given so this doesn't mean they weren't married. What state was your mother born in?
