There was one here in Franklin NH that my Grand father and his siblings were placed after my grt.grn. father after he came home for the Civil war. Back then it was called "The Golden Rule" Childrens home in Franklin NH later it changed to the "Daniel Websters Childrens Home" If you google Daniel Webster's Childrens home You'll find more information. it is not running now just the buildens left. Good Searching. David Newton

Sister Laurie
Ironically, it appears the husband of my distant cousin may have spent time there during his teen years as he shows up listed there in the 1930 census records. It would be wonderful if there were other records on him during the years that he stayed there.

My husband and I are serving as missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. We work in the Digital Preservation area and our job is to scan family history books to be prepared for digitizing and putting them on-line. We have just been working with a new donation: records from the early 1800's-forward from the AFGS of NY. It will be a couple of months, possibly, before they show up on-line but you can look for them on familysearch.org. Watch for the "books" tab. There are over 50,000 books from the library on-line so far. I do hope you will find your grandfather's records in what we've processed. Some of the "stories" seem so heartbreaking.

Sister Laurie Thomas

Do you have the phone # for the institution? What is it called today? How were you able to find out your Great-Grandmother was there in an 1880 census? How did you even begin looking to know that? Was her name changed? I'm trying to find a family member who I know was sent away, but we're not sure where to or if his name was changed. So far I'm unable to locate any information on him. Thank you so much for the post and hope to hear from you soon.

Lynnette

Yes - Iowa had one in Glenwood in Mills County on the far western side of the state. You can read about it by clicking on the following link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa_Institution_for_Feeble-Min...

While it was originally established as a state funded Civil War Orphan's home, in a few short years it became the Iowa State Asylum for Feeble Minded Children. It had a pretty horrible history and became a place where people dumped their children, either because they couldn't handle them or couldn't afford them.

I found that my Great-Grandmother had been listed there in the 1880 Census as an "inmate". 9 years later she was married to my Great-Granddad. I called the institution as it still exists today under a far more socially acceptable name. They have records from the 1800's and I called to find out who put my G Grandma there. They claimed she was never there until I provided photos of the actual census documents. They relented that some of the children on the page they had records for and some not - claiming they must have been remnants from when the institution was an orphanage for Civil War Soldier's Children. When I pointed out the Civil War had ended 8 years before her birth, I got a shrug. All of the family records show that she was a sweet, kind and hard working woman who raised three normal children and cared for a successful husband. Nothing indicates she was developmentally disabled in any way, so I suspect she was a victim of harsh financial times for her parents post war and she was "dumped" there.

Thus is the history of this fine institution!

Laura E Britton abt 1862 New York Foundling Asylum

Laura is my great grandmother and Iam stuck since I found the 1900 census for her.Its says on that census that Laura thinks she was born around 1862 in New York and that she was in the New York Foundling Asylum. It also goes on to say she did not know her parents. What I do know is very little,Laura travels to Montana somewhere between 1870 and 1885 and meets my great grandfather and marries him and has 1 daughter..Jessie May Robeson in 1893.Laura did not travel alone from what her daughter says in an interview by Jim Annin and a childhood friend and an author.Jim Annin wrote a book about the Montana early pioneers and their families.Laura traveled with a woman named Mary J Clark who later marries Malcolm M McDonald (yes of the McDonald Basin in Montana).Mary's family members tell me Mary came to Montana before 1870.My problem is I do not have an exact date of birth on Laura and I may even be wrong on her death date.I do know that when my grandma Jessie needed to get a birth certificate for reasons Iam unsure,in the early 1960's,Jessie wrote to someone in Kankakee,Illinois for that info because Laura's people lived there.I do not know who they were.My family is not close and Iam constantly getting wrong info from them so I am unable to rely on their info being correct.I was told by a member here that Laura's middle name ELLSWORTH could be rememberence name because the 1st civil war soldier to die in battle was a man named Ellsworth.Does anyone know what I should try next??I have searched everywhere but have come up with nothing. It has been suggested that maybe Mary J Clark is the mother of Laura..it could explain the huge age difference between the 2 ladies??And back then if you had a child out of wedlock it wasn't something you wanted everyone to know.Iam grasping at straws but I have yet to have 1 solid lead come.A person just doesn't appear out of no where like my great Gran did.The only records I can find are her 1900 census (under Dane Rolenson Fishtail,Stillwater,Montana) and that Laura is buried in Nye Cemetery in Nye Montana a very short way from where she and my great grandfather lived.I do not exact birth or death dates.

The only Owenetta/Etta Painter I can find that is married to John E. Carville appears in Pennsbury, Chester Co., PA in both 1920 and 1930 census. That, however, must not be yours, since according to the censuses, she was b. ca 1892-1895, about 30 years too late to have been a Civil War orphan.

It seems that some of these records are in Rockland County, NY and that they were the basis of this book:
http://www.heritagebooks.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&am...=
I need some help as I have hit a complete brick wall.

I have been searching for Gale/Gayle for some time now, apparently he was raised in an orphanage in Pennsylvania and served in the US army in the UK in 1944.

He was a coal miner prior to enlisting into the army which would have possibly been prior to WW2. His name has been spelt differently, he may have served in the 82nd airborne division, not 100% sure.

This is all the information I have, and would appreciate any help please.

Regards

Janice

I realised just yesterday that the Ann E that I found wasn't her because of the age...I went through various spellings of her name to find matches and even went page by page in the census'...sofar I found an Ann E Hanna b 1858 but in virginia, which compels me somewhat as there is a notation on one of the census records of one of the davis' coming from Virginia...I'l have to find that again and send it to you...I also saw where one record say's she's from NJ and another from PA..just like you said. And there's many more Ann Hannah's (and variations of that name) than I would have thought possible! As for the nicknames being used, on one of the records James E is listed as Jees...kinda nice. I don't remmeber Ethel, or maybe I do...I wish I could remember more from when I was a kid.
I'm gonna keep looking! I'm determined to find Ann!
~ Bob Bitting
On the Delaware 1900 census it shows Annie E born Feb. 1858
(1858 is on her headstone )

James E April 1856 ( 1856 on his headstone )

This census shows the months of birth which is nice.

a few of the kids names are written as nicknames
Sadie which was Sarah
and Effie which is Ethel
I do remember Ethel's birthday was July 28th
we always gave her a gift.

It sounds like her but on her head stone it says she was born 1858 and died in 1927.
On the 1880 census it has James E Davis 24, Ann 21, Ameila 3 and George 2. ( Jermiah and Sarah Davis are just above them on that census and lived next door by the address )
I wonder if George Hannah on the 1850 census could be an Uncle .
My grandmother told me that Ann's father died in a prison camp in Virgina (civil war ), he died from gangreen. Ann's mother then passed shortly after. Ann and I think her brother or borthers were taken in by family.

Did you ever hear that story ?

On the 1900 Delaware census and on the 1910 Pa. census it shows Ann as being born in Pa.
Ann gave birth in 1902 to James , she would have been 44 years old at the time of his birth. The Ann on the 1850 census would have been 59 to old to have a baby.
She remains a mystery.

Sorry it took so long to reply...busy, busy! Hoever I have some information...I found a record in the 1850 Federal Census for an Ann E Hannah (very hard to read in the original, but definatly Ann E) living in Lower Penns Neck, Salem, New Jersey...she is 7 at the time, living with her Father George, who was born in France, her mother Catherine, and a few others...I'm betting tha this is our Ann..as she is living in the same area as James E Davis.
BTW Raymond died in 1978 or so.

Crisby born in VA (1870 CENSUS )

I wonder if it was Jeremiah's parents who came from Wales.

When did Raymond pass away ?
I don't remember Wilmer, Reba or Sarah, although there were a few aunts that came down to visit (We live just north of Cape May, NJ) and Sarah or Reba may have been here...I'm trying my best to get my memory together...I was VERY young...I was born in 1961 so these visits had to happen between 1963 and 1970...hard to tell.
My sister has some dishes that were handed down from my grandmother and were given to her by one of the aunts,,,I want to say Dora...I was told they came over from England, they are dated to around 1830-1840 made by the john Wedgwood company (not Josiah)..so the date would lead me to believe that they once belonged to Jeremiah...pure speculation I know. Additionally My grandmother said there were Pirates in the Davis family...and I'm unsure if that was just a story to tell us kids or if maybe there were privateers...
I'm trying to remember more lol
Bob

Alsace is a region now in France, but often switches borders between France and Germany...I'm trying to find out more information on exactly where in Alsace Anna came from. My memory of what little my Grandmom told me is starting to return.
My Grandmom was Raymond's daughter Virginia... he had three children, Raymond, Helen and Virginia, all now deceased. I have vivid memories of Dora and Hattie's visits when I was a child in the 60's and of course i remember my g grandfather well. I'll definatly keep you posted as I remember things about what my grandmom said about anna...and thank you so much for the other information as I didn't have some of that. I spent the last couple of years doing my Paternal Genealogy and just stated tackling the Maternal side.
I'll be in touch...
Thanx, Bob Bitting
They lived in Salem NJ
James and Anna were married in 1876 Salem NJ and a few
years later moved to New Castle Delaware .My grandmother was born there as well as her brothers and sisters.
They then moved to Philadelphia , Pa.
Raymond used to visit us when I was really little in the late 1950's .Raymond lived in Philadelphia at the time I believe if memory serves me correctly.
My GG Grandmother was an Anna De Hannah who married James Elliot Davis in New Castle DE in 1880 or so...I know that they had 13 Children, Roy, Harriet (Hattie), Dora, Reba, Sarah, Raymond (my ggrandfather) and others that I can't remember. I'm wondering if this is your Anna. I was always told that the Davis were Welsh and that Anna De Hannah was from Alsace. I'm trying to find James Davis parents names and where they are from, as well as more info on Anna De Hannah.

James Edward Hartley is my great grandfather. He supposedly was sent to an orphanage at some time in his life somewhere in PA. He was born June 1858 which means he would have turned 16 years old June 1874. The list of orphans I have seen seem to be compiled after 1874 date. His father was John Hartley and his mother is Sarah, her maiden name may have been Albright. This family lived in Cambria county Pa in 1860. He shows up in Centre county Pa were he married my great grandmother Sarah Ann Shannon
24 Nov 1882. She is the daughter of Edward and Mary Jane (DALE) Shannon. I'm looking for any information about these families.

I am trying to find the parents of Abraham Bailey b. 1851 in PA. He told his family he was hiding behind a ladies dress while she was handing out pancakes to soldiers. He later married Margaret Kreitz of Mt. St. Mary's or St. Anthony's parish, Emmitsburg, Md. The ended up living at her parents house on the old
Thurmont Rd. which is not Kelbaugh Rd.
They were my Great grandparents and are buried in the graveyard at the Grotto behind Mt. St. Mary's College. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
