iam looking for any information i can find about st joseph's orphanage or orphan asylum in green bay wisconsin. my older sister, older brother and i were there for about a year in 1955 and 1956. also, how is it conected to st mary's infant home in green bay. we had a brother that was given up for adoption from this home around that time, and i would like to know how to go about finding him. any help will be greatly appreciated, and Merry Christmas to all searchers and people who give us help.

Am not sure if I can help. I lived at St. Jos. Orphanage from 1952 to 1961. I cannot recall those last names but then I was only 6 to 7 years old when I first came in. As for St. Mary's Home for infants, I do know they had a hall where babies and toddlers were kept, my brother being one of them, right on the grounds. My brother and older sister were taken into foster homes, I into several homes but kept returning to this orphanage, because I wanted to stay there. If you have any specific questions, I may or may not be able to answer. One important thing you should know: School Sisters of Notre Dame taught the schoolkids right on the grounds but I was sent out because I had to go to a deaf school some miles away.

Hello. I just read your reply. Again, this may be a long shot, but does the name Terry Lee Charles sound familiar to you? Dark skinned boy? I learned this weekend that he was an orphan and I'm not quite sure where to go from here. He was adopted out of Green Bay, WI. I believe he was born in 1949. I do not know how old he was when he was adopted. He is my birth father and I am trying to track down his birth family.

I read with interest your letter. I was hoping you could help me. My dad was placed in an orphanage around 1948 (he was 6 years old) and stayed there until he was 18. He was sent to work as a farm hand by the orphanage and St. Joseph's matches what I know of his childhood. His name was Dale Delbert Steinhoff. He was born 11/16/42. He just died a horrible death of lung cancer and I am trying to piece together his life - anything you could tell me would be of help. Sincerely, Wendy Molinaroli

Wendy, I read your message and wish that there was something I could tell you that would help in understanding more. At the time I was at St. Joes' i was only 5-6 and was in what they called the "little house", so I probably was too young to know him, although my older sister or brother might remember him, and I will ask them. I do know for certain that we worked during the summer picking beans for the orphanage. Also, I remember going to spend some time on a farm for a few weeks in the summer that was either affiliated with the orphanage or the people just did this on their own to give us some semblance of family life. The orphanage was not a terrible place, but it had many rules and it was best to obey them, as unfortunately some of the older nuns were very severe in their punishments. If there any specific things you would like to ask me please feel free to e-mail me or post another message. In the mean time, I will try to find out if by chance my sister or brother remember him. Good luck in your search for information, and I am sorry about the lung cancer, my father also died from this dreaded disease.

Wendy, I am sorry to say that neither of my siblings remember your father. The younger and older boys were seperated, and also the males and females. He was just enough older than my brother that they would not have been housed together. I am sorry that I can not be of any more help to you. I have had some correspondance with another man that was at this orphanage. He may or may not be able to help you, as he was there a few years earlier than we were. I was at the home from 1961 to 1963.today I was in that area and decided to drive through it for the first time since then.the dorm that I stayed in was still there.the wading pool in back was gone.I remember standing down by the front road and selling apples to people driving past picked from the apple trees in front.the first day I was there I ran away.so terrified and only eight years old.but I have good memorys. joe
