I realize this is a couple of years after your last post here, but I hope you will see it. I was also a resident at St Michael's Home in LaCrosse WI. I was there from August 1974 thru August 1976. Lived on 1B the entire time I was there.
During that time, there were three active units: 1B, for the older boys (13-18) ; 2B for the younger boys (9-13) ; and 2G, for all the girls aged 11-18. 3B and 3G had been closed some time before my arrival there in 1974. 1G was turned into the Home-Ec room....until 1975, when it was converted into an apartment for Father J.
I noticed that you mentioned Brent W. in your post. Man, who could forget Brent. I had him as a science teacher. Great teacher he was!
I have fond memories of my time at St Michaels...although if you had asked me back then, I might not have had such fond things to say. I went in as a very troubled fourteen year old boy. When I left in 1976, at age 16, I actually had somewhat mixed feelings about leaving for good. I had made monumental changes in my life and who I was, but I don't think the work was finished yet in August 1976. As I look back, I honestly believe that another year or even two may have been good for me.
I have written extensively about my experiences at St Michaels Home in LaCrosse. Thankfully, they made us keep journals back then. I still have those journals.
I would love the opportunity to get in contact with anyone who had anything to do with St Michaels in the timeframe of 1974-1976. Whether resident, Counselor or Volunteer, I have a feeling we could have some good conversations about our experiences there.
Who knows? Maybe you even knew me back then!
