Milwaukee Home for Dependent Childern (Orphanage) was torn down and replaced with Froedert Memorial Hospital Complex. Also torn down was the Milwaukee County Assylum. When my great-grandfather contracted his second round of the terrible flu took so many lives between 1917 and 1921, they took him to the County Hospital there, where he passed shortly thereafter in 1920. My great grandmother may have suffered from a breakdown, so they put her in the county asylum where she did cleaning, and her 5 children went into the orphanage. Three of the five stayed there until they completed an 8th grade education, the other two were adopted out. My grandmother, the oldest, kept in touch with all of her siblings all of her life, and when she was financially able, took in my great-grandmother, who still only spoke a few words of English. I come from a long line of female survivors! Good luck with your search.
