I am searching for an Elizabeth (Lizzie) Blackmore (sometimes Booska) who was at this home.

Thank you very much for this information. I will probably physically go there myself. But I was also told that there is some information at UVM.

What can I expect to find?

Thank you!

I suspect that my granmother may have resided at an orphanage of some kind for a period. She would never speak of her childhood extensively and it is only recently that I have been able to locate the names of her parents. Her name was Selina May Katon her d.o.b was 06/29/1920. I can find no records of her having lived with her parents. I have found census records that indicate she did reside with her siblings in 1940. I know that she spoke often of a woman referred to only as Mrs Sterns.

Still searching for Sarah Ann Ruston-Ploof's parents. Sarah was born in 1840 in Charlotte Vermont.( Charlotte could be in Chittenden County or Orleans County Vermont.) Around 1858 Sarah was a resident of Ferrisburgh Vermont. Can anyone find 1850-8 census that shows Sarah living in Ferrisburgh with a Zubar family or any family?

Sarah was an adopted child. Her parents can't be found.

Joseph Norman & Mary Seguin were witness to Sarah and Abraham Ploof marriage ceremony-dated May 17,1858.

In 1888, the Burlington Diocese opened an orphanage on North Avenue in Burlington, Vermont. The beautiful massive structure still stands (it is 60,000 square feet or so) but has been mostly empty since 1978 when the orphanage closed. The Diocese built an addition in the 1940's and still occupies it, although the entire complex is now for sale.

anyone with info on a 'russian orphanage farm' in Weathersfield, VT (Windsor County)?

It appears my grandfather (John Swistak born 1915) and his siblings (Stephen, Margaret & Mary) were sent there around 1920-1930 from Passaic, NJ for reasons unknown. My grandpa John never talked about 'home' and ran away at a young age so not much is known about his siblings or parents (although I do have their names).

Thanks in advance!

Andrew
I believe my father (last name is Perras) was in St. Joseph's in the early 1950's, his mother put him there when he was 7 years old along with his sister who was only 15 months old.
Coincidentally, I have an uncle who was at the Kurn Hatten home for boys (last name Kinne) around that same time and he would have been about 10-13 yrs of age.

I wish I knew more about their time spent there. They don't talk much about that time period, they were put there due to sad and fatal circumstances. Luckily my dad was taken in by his aunt and uncle when he was around 14. As far as my uncle I believe he was there until he entered the service.

Re: Burlington's Home for Destitute Children (Contact Info)

Well the way I found my ancestors who were in orphanages was through the U.S. census, but I no longer have that subscription so you will have to search it if you have it.

Search U.S. census for Vermont in the year 1850, I would just search Sarah at first, keeping in mind the correct one will probably be in or around Charlotte, Vermont and that she will be 9-10 years old depending on if her birthday is before or after the cenus date. Once you check on one possible "hit" you will see what date the census was taken on top of the page and KNOW if she would have been 9 or 10 so when you chaeck future hits you can screen by the right age. I found one of my ancestors doing this.

If there were no orphanages in that city try Burlington and any other city that had one.

I'm pretty sure the 1840 census did NOT list dependents by name I THINK the 1850 did but it might not. If not you will need to get a list of orphanages in operation in those years and try and contact them each and ask them to search their records. Even if 1850 does list names you might find a list of orphanages helpful because it will tell you what cities to keep an eye out for when you search the census.

And of course keep an eye out for all those "maiden" names also. KEEP the FAITH! One problem I have run into time and time again is that so many records are not on the web yet. What you can NOT find today will only be one mouse click away 10 years from now, or maybe even next week. So even if you don't find it now check back often.

GOOD LUCK,
Michael

Hi-
I would very much like to find additional information about my gggrandmother Sarah A. Ploof of Vermont.

Sarah was born in 1840 in Charlotte,Vermont.I believe she was put in an orphanage between 1840 and 1856.Her death Ferrisburgh Registration reads that she was an adopted child, parents cannot be found. Her maiden name is listed as Rustin. At the age of 18,Sarah married my gggrandfather,Abraham Ploff(Ploof)on May 17,1858 in the state of Vermont.(Sarah's maiden name is listed what looks like Zubar, doing research, the name Zubar is actually Jubar.Sarah's adopted parents were French Canadians)The wedding ceremony was performed by John Chase Minister of the Gospel. In presence were Joseph Norman and Mary Seguin.A daughter born on the 12th of December 1859 and a second child a daughter was born the 21st of August 1861.

Abraham and Sarah's daughter Mary was born August 21st,1861.Mary's birth record lists Sarah's maiden name as Rayano.

Is there anyway possible that you can help find what orphanage Sarah was in? Any additional information is appreciated. Please do not email me direct.Thank you.

Burlington's Home for Destitute Children (Contact Info)

Incase you had an ancestor who stayed here, this is the current contact information for this Orphanage.

The Baird Center was founded as "The Home for Destitute Children" in 1865 to help children orphaned by the Civil War. Vermont had the highest per capita losses resulting from the war.

It changed to "The Children's Home" in 1932 when government funding began to be provided by the Roosevelt administration and people were better able to support their own kids at home.

It became the Baird Center for Children and families in 1982, and merged with Howard in 1994 to create a comprehensive system of care.

Baird Center for Children & Families
(802) 863-1326
(802) 863-2400
1110 Pine St
Burlington, VT 05401

Michael

"The residents are listed at E.D. 295, 64, and 72."
Well I don't know how to translate E.D.'s into page numbers. But if you go to 1870 census to Vermont to Chittenden to Burlington it starts you at page 1 of 360. I didn't see E.D. listed anywhere on the page.

I did find a couple of people listed as "Sisters of Charity" on page 295, but much less than I would have expected for an Orphanage. I did find the "Home for Destitute Children" on page 125. Just incase anyone wants to see it. I didn't see anything for St. Joseph's on page 64 and wasn't going to search page by page. Apparently the institutions aren't indexed.

I am searching for records of my grandmother and her twin sister who were in an orphanage in Burlington. In the 1900 Cencus I found several.
Providence Orphan Asylum (Sisters of Charity), St. Joseph's Orphanage & Hospital, and Home for Destitute Children. The residents are listed at E.D. 295, 64, and 72. My grandmother aged out at 15 when she was placed in a home as a servant. She was listed in the 1900 cencus under the head of household that employed her. I found her using the Soundex cards on microfilm.
Good luck!

New England Kurn Hattin is correct although I did not know its exact location in VT.
I was looking for the time frame of 1955 as my brother was placed there at that time. I have since found my brother.

The other location was North Ave Burlington VT.
St Josephs Orphanage that I made reference to.

Thanks for your responce!

I want to post the correct spelling of the name of the home in Westminster, VT, based on the 1933 census of dependent children conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau :

New England Kurn Hattin Homes. The name is derived from a place in the Holy Land : Kuron Hattin (means "Horns of Hattin"). It was located near the Sea of Galilee.

The names of the inmates of orphanages were not printed in the report of the 1933 census, and I don't know if the names were even taken by the census taker. Perhaps he only took the quantity of children in each institution.

Reg Niles
RegNMINiles@cs.com
