Lawrence Goley born July 1909 - parents Deloss C Goley & ?

In the 1910 Census Lawrence is shown as age 10/12 (Census was taken May 2). Deloss said his wife was Catholic and her parents would not accept their marriage outside their faith. When the baby was born, Deloss was told it died at birth and the parents wouldn't let him talk to his wife. They took her from the hospital and, it turns out, the baby really wasn't dead but was put into the St Agnes Baby Home, Abernathy, Clackamas, Oregon. Where we found him in the 1910 Census. He found the Goley family years later...Deloss had passed. He told of his unhappy life and he must have had one, I've found he drank did some drugs and burgled when he had no money. I have a name someone suggested might be his mother, Susan Mulligan, but have no proof that is the correct person and can't find information on her or her family. I've only found a marriage license for Deloss and a Fanny Williams. So I'm hoping to find out the mothers name and what happened to her. Do the records for this home and their charges still exist? If they do does anyone know where they are? Or, does anyone have a hint where else I should look? I don't know what hospital he was born in. No one else in the family knows either. Thanks for any assistance you can give...

St. Agnes Baby Home, Oregon City, Oregon

My father was born in 1922 and at some point was living in St. Agnes Baby Home in Oregon City, OR until 1925 when he became a foster child and was eventually adopted by the same couple. Catholic Charities in Portland, OR has been my only hope so far in discovering more about my dad's background.
I would love to learn more about the circumstances leading up to his placement at the home. I only know the name of the doctor who delivered him - Allen Noyes. Am hoping to find out where dad was born - possibly Hutchinson General Hospital (now Willamette Falls Hospital) which was a maternity hospital started in 1918, and located near St. Agnes Baby Home. Any information will be appreciated.

I have no answer to your specific inquiry. All I can offer is this bibliographic citation from the Adoption Bibliography Center, all of which is on my computer:

Oregon Baby Home, Portland. Annual Report. A collection of reports (1911-1916) are in the Oregon State Library, Salem. Also catalogued as: PORTLAND, Or. Baby Home. The “Baby Home” [report].

The Baby Home was later known as the Waverly Children's Home.

Reg Niles
RegNMINiles#cs.com
(change pound sign to at sign)

P.S. Classmates can be a resource when seeking students from a specific school. I avoid using it because they force you to pretend to be a member of a specific class in a specific school in a specific city.
Hey Reg, or anyone...
Do you know how I can find out who "worked" at the Waverly Baby Home in the 1918 - 1925 time frame?
I have called them and their records back then are in a total mess and they have no idea.

I have an old photo album from a Baby Home in Portland, I assume its Waverly, but before they moved into the new building.
Pics of the Camp Fire Girls, OSU - Sigma Nu Frat. Odie - Orin Dadmun is one of the frat brothers and a KEANE???

Any one know how I can get records of graduating class of Behnke-Walker Business College? It seems these girls that worked there, most went to Behnke-Walker. Sad thing is, most names in this album are First and Nick Names, very few last names.
Any help or suggestions may help.
Thank you in advance,
shyfawn11@hotmail.com
Some last names are
Vermillion, Dadmun, Horner, Moore, Kelley, Budd,
Coyle or Coles, Pickens, Catsforth, johnson, Keane, Boyd, Marenco, Ferry, Jenkins, Foster, Chandlers,
I Believe that a MOORE family ran this baby home...

PS Reg, I have NILES in my line too, from NY.
Looking for Sidney

In 1966 my parents took in a 2-month old baby named Sidney (boy) as foster parents. I was 9 years old then and Sidney became the light of my life and my dream come true. I had two older biological brothers and Sidney was the third foster child to become part of our family. We knew nothing about his parents except that they were unwed, the father was African-American and the mother Caucasian. Just when Sidney had found his way deeply into our hearts and my parents were ready to start adoption proceedings, 4 months later his birth mother decided to take him back, which was her right and within the 6-month time limitation. I was devastated and cried for weeks. He was the little brother I'd always wanted. I have no last name for this now-40-yr.-old man, and we were not allowed to gain any information or follow up on his life, but I've always wanted to know what became of him. If anyone can look through the records and find out about a baby named Sidney who went to the Weller foster family in N.E. Portland in 1966 and can lead me to a non-confrontational way of communicating with him or finding anything more about him, I'd realize another dream come true.
Thank you.

Carol

Hi Yes the Waverly Baby home was there. I hope you have better luck then I did. The home was started in 1887. It is now called the Waverly Childrens Home. Although they do not do adoptions any more from what I understand, they still have all the old records. But for the early 1920's there is not much to go on. They do have a little. You can contact them at.....
Waverly Children's Home
3550 SE Woodward Street
Portland, OR 97202
Toni Swope
(503) 234-7532
You will need to have some records such as your birth certificate and any record that will connect you to him for proof of family. Just call Toni she is great to work with.

Good Luck on Your search.

Thank you for the information you posted. It was interesting to me because I am looking for my father's adoption. I was just wondering when the Waverly home was in use? My father was born in Portland, Oregon on 1 December 1919 and was supposedly put up for adoption. Would Waverly have been open in 1920 and if not, do you have any suggestions as to where I can find out any details about my father's adoption like where he would have been placed after his birth? From what my mother has told me, my grandfather was away during WWI and when he returned home, my grandmother already had my father picked out for adoption. If you can offer any suggestions as to where to look, I would appreciate the suggestions.

adopted from Waverly Home

Find as many family history boards in the Portland to Salem, OR, area's and post as much info as you can (without getting too personal) about your mom. Birth date, when adopted, area adopted parents lived, and other information. Sometimes, someone will have a clue that might lead you to something. If given any clues, no matter how small, keep them and hopefully they will lead you to something promising. With so many people looking at family-web-boards, someone might remember some history of how your mother got into Waverly Home. Good luck! Mary

Waverly Baby Home-Portland, Or

Toni,

I believe the Waverly Baby Home was in Portland, Or. It may be a children's counseling/help center now. I am not sure how you might get ahold of any adoption records. Oregon has very tightly closed all adoption records and is in the process of a legal battle to open the availability to original birth cert.'s which voter's had approved but birth moms said "No way!" and took it to court. Children that went through Waverly Baby Home were usually adopted through social services provided by the State. Perhaps by listing your mothers adopted name, someone might run across information to connect you with her birth family. I wish you luck in your search, Mary
