Dennis,

I was at St. Micheal's between '58 and '62. Sister Edburga was our house mom; Sister Margaretta Marie was my teacher in 4th and 5th grades; Sister Rose Alma in 6th. Sister Olveria Joesph -- the little Irish gal -- was my favorite. Sister Philis, a big blustery kind of nun, replaced Sister Edburga in the summer of '62. Ther were some good times, too. We had a great baseball team, and of course, Camp Columbus and going to Sea Side was always a treat. At least I thought so. I served on the altar with Richie Wylouda, Tommy Linda and Russel Blank. You might remember then, eh? Anyway, I saw your dates you posted; so, I thought I'd reach out and say hello. Hope all is well at your end of the world.

Best,

Vince O'Neill

I lived on Wayne Avenue, Which was between Sanford Avenue & Harrison Avenue in East Orange. I went to Washington Street School on Sanford Ave. I met a few of my classmates and I would have dinner with then and they would come to my house on 56 Wayne Ave. It was (the orpanage) depressing, dark in the basment where meals were served. The home was torn down shortly after WWII. What I'am telling you above happened 1939 - 1943

Proctor Baker

Hi Emil:
We may have talked about Sacred Heart Orphanage before. You were living in Monroe.. Monroe was where the SHO Summer Camp was with the FIVE Bungalows up the Hill from the Nuns House.. the Camp Swimming Pool just down the road I got out of the Orphanage in about 1950 spent a total of 10 years there.. When I finished Grammer School. I got out of SHO...With mixed feelings..
I Remember Sisters Gertrude,Kathleen,Henretta, Sister Agnes, Sister Valariani and I also remember the 2 Nuns who did all the food cooking in the Kitchenfor all us kids and all the Nuns had their Meals together in a large Dinning room by the Entrance Door near the Oval Driveway on Belgrove Avenue side of SHO. We guys probably remember the SHO experience like it was just Yesterday..
I helped the SHO Nuns some years ago Defend against a sexual Abuse Lawsuit..I had to testify under Oath and gave all the Attorneys Hours and Hours of answers at the Depositions.I have a copy of the Legal Book filled with the all the questions I had to answer. The Nuns Lawyers sent a stretch Limo to Pick me up and take me to the Lawyers Office on Broadway in New York City.
THAT WAS MY PAYBACK FOR ALL THAT THE NUNS DID TO RAISE, FEED,CLOTH and Educate all of us....

BEST REGARDS
Tony Di Giesi

i remember a room off the nuns dining room and down the hall it had a little kitchenette with a pass through window.
we were not invited to the dances ,we were the baby girls! but we did sneak down sometimes to watch through the pass
thru window. I don't remember anyone named ellen. the number of girls declined and my guess is that is was just cost effective to send the girls to the local catholic
schools.

when i first got there we were schooled in St.Mary's i'm thinking '66 '67 we started going out to school. I went to kindergarten at Our Lady of Sorrows at that time. I'm thining you probably had dance class in the room that was later remodeled by funds donated by John Cauffield and the room was then named after him. And we got a juke box it was pretty cool! We still had mass on sudays in the chapel where i made my communion, until the early 70's.

maybe I was a little too young to remember that. I do rememeber we used to go to pigeon hill (a man made lake), but that was a few years after i started there, maybe in the late 60s early 70s? I guess we weren't lucky enough to get Kit Kat Bars but i do remember the Lance Brand of snacks we used to get ( peanut brittle, cheese crackers & cookies) Do you remember the kithcen staff was Mrs. Stewart with the drop jaw and i think Ann Gallo with the cotton in her ears and Mrs. Glass? Maybe you will remember Rosie Muno, she is also on ansetry you can read some of her posts, her user name is Sadie123176.

I've been trying to find info about it for a long time starting with a name. My Dad won't talk about it, he was born 1926 and was there from about 1931-1938. If you could ask your grandmother about the conditions there etc, I'd greatly appreciate it. My uncle, made a comment one day I'll never forget "God only knows what they did to him in there"

Thanks,

M

Look on the web under "Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton" I began with someone working in adoptions but do not know who is there yet. You may have to be persistent.
It took me a few months of pleading, asking, begging but when they gave me photocopies it was worth it.
Best of luck, my prayers are with you.

My mother was a resident of St. Michaels Orphanage from 1927 to 1932. A wonderful employee of Catholic Charities was able to go into archives of the orphans and actually sent me about 20 pages she copied from originals. There was so much info about moms life....(not the horrible things)...but at least more info than we had ever had.

There is so much history in that place!!Ihope yoy will respond .

Luis and Ramon were 2 nd 4 years old. I have been searching for them for 40 years. They gave my oldest brother Carmelo to my father, but they didn't, Catholic charities didn't want to give my two youngest brothers to him. My brother Carmelo and I speak everyday. I would like to know where are my two youngest brothers.

Hi Sharon !
My wife's name is Julieann ....back then we dont know what last name her mother told the nuns....could've been "Tollinchi" or "Gomez". Julie was there from Around 1967 (she thinks) to 1974.... she would have been there longer but we read some where that St. Anthony closed @ 1974. She remembers very little as she was only a baby when her mom dropped her off.... but, she does remember the showers, and sleeping in a big open rooom with a ton of other little girls .... would you mind if she writes back to you ? . Our email at home if you want is JCK1017@hotmail.com.

Thanks for writting, have a good day, hope to hear from you again.
