Was so glad to see your posts. My mom was adopted out of the orphanage in 1927. She found out it was burned and never pursued finding any of her family. Does anyone know if there are records anywhere dating back that far?
Hardcastle was her adopted mother

her birth certificate says 16 year old mom was unwed.
named Robertson. She was born July 29, 1932. Thats all we know. She passed in 2005 not knowing.

My mom says they were together in Columbus at Mississippi Training School. I checked the names at the Masonic Home and they are not on the list. I checked the 1930 census and they were still on the farm in Meridian. So they were placed in a home sometime around 1932.
At this point the 1940 census cannot be viewed. I guess I will wait.
Thanks for the help.

I was able to look at the 1940 census on ancestry.com. Have you tried the Masonic home for boys in Columbus, MS, and the Masonic home for girls I believe was in Meridian, MS? Brothers and sisters were sent to the two Masonic homes. The census always list the residents of the Orphanages usually at the end of the area in which they are located.

MS orphanages 1880-1900 list of orphans

Looking for information on where to find the names of children that were in orphanages in MS during 1880-1900. My gggrandfather (Jeremiah Coston) supposedly died abt 1877, leaving a wife (Frances B. Steelman Coston) and 3 sons (Phillip James, born 1868; Abraham born 1872 and Jeremiah born 1875). The family first shows up on 1870 census in Jones County, MS, then nothing until the 3 sons show up as landowners in Covington County. I am thinking that if the parents died (after 1875) the boys may have been placed in an orphanage since they don't show up living with any relative. Wanting to find where I might find a census of orphanages that might have existed during that time. Any guidance is appreciated.

I am looking for my natural father. His name is Billy West. He left Palmer Orphanage and supposedly went into the Army. He might not want anything to do with me and that is ok. I am doing family history and this family side is incomplete. He had approximately 3 sisters and three brothers. I was in touch with another lady about this and have lost communication with each other. If anyone can help in this de-lima, it would be highly appreciated.

At one time , assuming the mid 1920s there was an Orphanage ( possibly in Jackson ) that had the name Bilbo, associated with it. I think he might have been a governor at one time back then. I was told that there was a cannery either behind or next to this orphanage where some of the older children worked. Any help appreciated in finding out about this place., when it existed, and any other pertinent info about it. After that I hope to find a record for a couple of brothers who were there, for a time. Has anyone heard of this place?

Deborah, please forgive me for taking so long to post a reply to your message regarding your father, Billy (William)WEST. I have just returned from my home California to my home in Mississippi which is where my records about Palmer Home for Children are kept. I do not know if you wish for me to post the information about your father's family here, or if you would like to send me your e-mail. I found in my records a picture of your father, and also his siblings. I also have a picture of your Aunt Helen Louise West which was taken on her wedding day to Mr. Louie Lowe. She was married at Palmer Home for Children on a Saturday in September 1949. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Cecilia Ann Harris Gossman, a Palme Home for Children alumni.

My father was raised in the boys bldg., his sisters in the girls. When they were near to teens, my grandmother reclaimed them one by one.

My father has passed on now, but I do recall his detest for this place, the abuse he suffered, he never recovered from. He heard that the bldgs were to be demolished. He was in his 30's at the time and made a trip to the location to watch the bldgs. fall.

As for rec'ds, the site at top and the census records are about all there is, I would imagine.

I wish I did know. Here is a little more info that might help in the search. He had a sister named Maxine/Betty. He had an older brother named David. There were a set of twins, Dan and Bryan(?). My Mom states, Bill may have come from Tennessee.

I have contacted the orphanage over the past years. I was told to write him a letter, mail it to them. If they have an address then they would mail it to him.
The current address that I have is:
Dr.Rob Crankshaw
P.O. Box 746
Columbus, Mississippi 39703
1-601-328-5704

I did not follow through. I felt let down. But it's time to begin again.
Thank you everyone for your help

Hi,
My name is Deborah. My mother was raised there for a while. Her name is Lillian Nichols. She had two sisters, Virgie and Catherine ( who is now deceased from bone cancer) who came to the orphanage as well. My mother met up with a man known as Billie West. He had a brother named David and a sister. My mind went blank. Billy is my biological father and I have been trying to get info on him. I was born in 1954. He supposedly went into the service, possibly in 1953 or in 1954. My mother does not remember much about him. It was a one night stand. She claims he went into the army and he sent her 10 dollars for me. Do you have any thing on this person or persons that I have mentioned?

looking for Aileen (or Ailene) Foster (Mattison) orphan in Jackson, MS

I am eager to find my lost adopted cousin, named Aileen [see variant names in header]; she was in an orphanage in Jackson, Mississippi around 1944 and my aunt Felma Julie ["Pep"] Yarborough and her husband Vincent A. Mattsion were in process of adopting her at that time. Pep's mother Edna Segrue Yarborough also used to travel from their family home in McComb, MS to visit Aileen in the Jackson orphanage. I have several photos of Aileen around ages 5 to 7, some of them notated on the back. One, for example, says "Aileen Foster Alabama Days with Pep and Vince" and Aileen is about 7 or 8 years old in that photo. Others show a younger Aileen in family group shots, and one shows her sitting on a suitcase smiling, with the caption "Aileen going to the orphanage," andm, noted on the back, "Aileen 1945." For reasons I do not know, Aileen disappeared from family photos after about 1947. It may be that the adoption was not finalized, although I have one picture of Aileen with my mother's [Pep's sister's] handwriting on the back saying "Aileen Mattison." If you know anything at all about Aileen or Jackson, MS orphanages about this time period, please reply. You may email me directly at jschaaf@umassd.edu. Thanks very much for any information you can provide.

You might also try the library----they have a lot of local history information in thier archives. Palmer Home would probably be your best chance if they were kept together. It is still in existance but is more like foster care now. They do not adopt children out.

http://www.lowndes.lib.ms.us/

The Mississippi Baptist Orphanage has been known for many years now as the Baptist Children's Village and its primary campus, the Inda Nunnery Campus, has the address of P. O. Box 27, Clinton, MS. It's in the Jackson, MS, telephone book. The original campus was demolished to make way for what was in the 1960's the Jackson Mall and a new campus was built on the western edge of Jackson. The other principal orphanage in Jackson in early years was the Methodist Orphanage which was near Millsaps College.

My mother and 4 of her siblings lived in the "Mississippi Baptist Orphanage" in Jackson Mississippi between about 1907 til around 1917. Mother passed away 2 years ago at age 98. She told us many stories about living in the orphanage and I have an article that was in "The Baptist Record" Newspapter dated Feb 24, 1977. The name of the institution was changed to the "Baptist Children's Village" in Feb. 1961. I hope you were able to get the information you needed. If you have any interesting anecdotes about life in the "Home" (as my mother and her siblings referred to it), I would love to hear them. Thank you....Arrie Dollard

Linda, there is an orphanage in Columbus, Lowndes Co, MS which was founded in 1895. The name of the home was called PALMER ORPHANAGE FOR CHILDREN, and is now called PALMER HOME FOR CHILDREN. Check the 1900 cenus for Lowndes Co., MS. It has the listing for all the children. You indicated that Charles was adopted. I do not think that even that early children could be adopted from PALMER. Once they were placed in the home only the parent or whoever placed them there could take them out of the home. Hope this message is of some help to you in your search for your ancestor. Good luck.

Gloria, there is a children's home in Columbus, Lowndes Co., MS. The name of the home in the 1920's was called PALMER ORPHANAGE FOR CHILDREN and is now called PALMER HOME FOR CHILDREN. The home was founded in 1895 and is still in operation. I was raised at the home from 1940 thourgh 1954. The children could not be adopted. I have alot of historical information on the home including children living there in the 1920's. My records are at my home in Mississippi. I am in California at this time, so do not have access to the records. If you will send me your e-mail or your snail address I will get back in touch with you when I return to Mississippi. In the mean time you could use the 1920 or the 1930 census for Lowndes Co., MS to look at the list of the children living at Palmer at that time. Hope this information will help you in your search. Palmer Home for Children has a web site. It is http://www.palmerhome.org.

The only information I have on the Census is the 1880 Census for Adams County, MS. Roill 639 Book 1 Page 46 has a listing of all the orphans at the Protestant Orphans Asylum in Natchez, Adams Co., MS

I am sure if you go back to the messages that we responded to you can find the message from Beverly Smith.
