My GGF was born in NY in 1845. His parents, Irish natives, brought him and his 2 brothers to New Orleans between 1847-1850. Francis and Dennis appear in the 1850 Census in an orphanage (City of Lafayette Male Orphan Asylum) now part of New Orleans. Adoption was illegal in Louisiana before 1872, but allowed with a notarized statement after 1864. Francis appears in the 1860 Census living with John and Nancy (Easley) Powell in Amite County, MS. So the adoption took place before 1860.
I'm trying to find the names of Francis's biological parents from County Cork. Also, I'm curious to know how Francis ended up with the Powell's in Mississippi when the orphanage he was located in Louisiana? Perhaps, he ran away when he was old enough. This might explain why his younger brother was not adopted by the Powell's too. If you can offer any type of clue or information on adoptions in Mississippi at that time, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
