trying to learn where and when my dad was in this home with four of his siblings. My dad was Bill Siefke and believe it was as of 1940. He was in the military in 1946 when he was 20 so he would have been there until 1944. Thanks.

My father was abandoned on the door step of a judge in the town of Wallace Idaho in 1940. All he knows is that there was a foundling house in Wallace at the time and a Mrs. Wolfe was somehow involved. He was eventually adopted by Felix and Virginia Rea. Felix was a attorney at the time working for the office of the Judge who's door step he was left on.
Anyone with any information about the foundling House or a Mrs. Wolfe in the Wallace Idaho area would be greatly apprietated.

I found my father in law in the Boise orphanage. I wrote to them via their web site and they answered, went up staris in the attic and found the old file. The lady scanned the information and sent it to me free of charge and I purchased a book about the orphanage. This was an amazing connection for me.
If you would like to learn more about the facility, their
address is 740 Warm Springs Ave., Boise, ID 83712,
phone (208) 343-7813 and they have a web site at
www.childrenshomesociety.com.
No one has replied to my message but I have done some research and have a reply to myself, hopefully it will help someone else. I found a book written by the department of Commerce bureau of the census called "Benevolent Institutions 1910" and it can be found at http://ia311238.us.archives.org/0/items/benevolentinstit00un...

Any way it gives two orphanages in Idaho in 1910:
1/ Boise Receiving Home 740 Warm Spring Ave founded in 1908 2/ Lewiston Receiving Home for North Idaho 1806 Eighteenth Ave founded in 1908. I have also found that the records of the North Idaho Children's Home, Inc. were donated to the University of Idaho by the Children's Home in August of 1984. http://www.lib.uidaho.edu/special-collections/Manuscripts/mg....

I am still searching for the orphange that my father-in-law and his three brothers were taken to when found abandoned in a hotel in Jerome, Idaho in about 1913 or 1914.

Any help on this search will be greatly appreciated.

Erma Stevenson
ermajane@mailaka.net

I found your great grandmother and her sister listed in the 1900 Denver County Idaho Census. They are listed as wards of the Henry VanBargen family. Elizabeth was born April 1884 and Maggie was born March 1886, both in Washington. Their parents were listed as being born in Missouri. Both girls were in school, so seems they were in the house as foster children and not employed by the family.

I am looking for an orphanage in Idaho, probably Pocatello, probably run by the Catholic Church that existed in 1913 where my father-in-law, Sheridan Stevenson and his brothers lived for a couple of years.

Idaho Orphanages

Hello. I'm searching for information on what orphanages there would have been in Idaho around 1885-1900. My greatgrandmother and her sister were in an orphanage there up until they were each married. I know very little about them and this side of the family. My greatgrandmother is Margaret "Maggie" Grinner, and her sister's name is Lizzie. How would I go about finding them? Maggie passed away June 17, 1911 in Grangeville, Idaho. email at "thespaceplace@prodigy.net"

Here's a citation of a directory :

UNITED STATES. Census, Bureau of the. "Benevolent Institutions, 1904." [Washington, D.C.: Govt. Print. Off.], 1905. 335 p.

Idaho didn't publish many directories that I know of. The best research, I think, would be the federal census of 1900. It's indexed by the Soundex system. 99% of the 1890 federal census was destroyed by fire, and Idaho did not conduct any state censuses.

A census would include the inmates of any institution.

As far as finding old records of orphanages, don't be too optimistic. But check a state or county historical society, in case one of them inherited the records you seek.

Reg Niles
RegNMINiles@cs.com
