It's not really a book, it's just a 7 page "brochure" and not sure if it contains any useful information for you. I'll email it to you if you want. Just email me at leimanab@yahoo.com and I'll reply with the "book".
My mom was there from 18 months to 18 years old! She had nothing but great memories of the orphanage and made life long friends there, which included the women who were in charge.
Aloha,
Sue Brimeyer

Orphanages in Hawaii early 1900's

My grandfather Oliver A. Hamlin was born in 1907 and was in an orphanage in Hawaii... possibly the Big Island. I am told there were 12 children 10 of which were placed in orphanages but I do not know if this is true. My great grandmother was born in Hawaii and my great grandfather was born in Germany. This is all the information that I have. I do not have names other than Hamlin. I have read that many German's in Hawaii "anglicized" their names during WWI so I'm hoping that Hamlin is my grandfather's name and that it wasn't changed while at the orphanage. I am trying to find any information that I can on my great grandparents or any orphanage information.

Aloha Mary, You're Bell's daughter?! Wow, my mom and Bell have been friends for as long as I can remember! My mom's name is Ilma Murin and she lives in Hawaii Kai with my youngest brother, Bob. I thought I knew all Bell's children because we all grew up together when we were kids then Bell and her family moved to Kailua and we didn't see much of them after that. Mom and Bell lost touch with each other after Bell moved to Nevada (?) to be with her daughter, Francie. I can see in the 1930 Census that Bell had a brother named Peter. Is that who she is looking for? How is Bell doing? I was just visiting my mother in Hawaii and she is hanging in there ok! We talked about her friends at St. Mary's when I was there. Look forward to hearing from you.
Sue Brimeyer
My mother and her brother were also orphans in the mission in the 1924 to the early 1940's. My name is Mary Kanae and my mom's name is Isabella Barcas. What is your mom and sister's name. I know some of the people who are friends of my mom's. Please send me the info as I would appreciate any thing I can find for her. She is still trying to locate her brother who is now 87yrs old and we do not know if he is still alive or where he is. Thank you,
Mary

Both of my grandparents and their siblings were given over to an orphanage somewhere in Hawaii, probably late 19th century. My grandparents met there. Both of their mothers had lost their husbands and could not care for their large families until they remarried. My grandparents were Portuguese/Norwegian (grandmother) and German (grandfather). I only know their names and have nothing on their parents - the last names of my grandparents were Halverson and Klemm. I am mostly trying to search out the Portuguese side of the family right now.

Let me cite a book I have never seen :

[Van DEERLIN, Hilda]. History of St. Mary's Mission and Home for Children, Honolulu, 1927. Honolulu, T.H.: Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 1927. 7 p. Book is in Sinclair Library of the Univ. of Hawaii, Honolulu.

A source from 1940 mentions St. Mary's Children's Home, among institutions for dependent and neglected children.

Reg Niles
