I have learned so much, that I felt compelled to start a new thread with updated information:

I finally have accurate information regarding "The Home". I was a resident from 1951 - 1956 along with one brother. Mrs. Chapman was the matron of The Southern Christian Home at the time. We were adopted into a wonderful family and in 1967 I contacted Mrs. Chapman, who gave me a telephone number for a minister who had often visited me at "The Home" and he contacted my birth mother and asked her permission to give me her telephone number. She said it was okay and in 1968 I met my birth mother and extended family. I have two additional half brothers and two half sisters that I was unaware of.

The Southern Christian Home was once a beautiful plantation home belonging to Augustus Hurt. It was of historical importance during the Civil War because it was occupied by General Sherman during the Battle of Atlanta. It was torn down and today it is the site of the Carter Presidential Library. A historical marker is in the parking lot of the Carter Center which marks the plantation and house location.

I received the following information from the Atlanta History Center:

"Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Southern Christian Home.

You are correct that the home was located at 1011 Cleburne Avenue and it was formerly the residence of Augustus Hurt. According to an historical marker at the Carter Presidential Library, "200 yards northeast stood the plantation residence of Augustus F. Hurt (1830-1921), built 1858 and razed by Federal Forces, 1864."

According to John Adams' obituary (Adams was a former president of the home) in the April 16, 1999 Atlanta Journal Constitution, the home was moved to a location on Briarcliff Road in the 1960s before closing in the 1980s.

I hope this helps somewhat.

According to Jim Struve, a former employee of The Southern Christian Home, "The Southern Christian Children's home was relocated to Briarcliff Road (I believe the address was 914 Briarcliff Rd, N.E. - it was next to Callanwolde). It changed names and became Laurel Heights Hospital sometime in the 1980's or 1990's."

I want to thank all those people who have helped me get updated information.

I would like to get a picture of The Southern Christian Home/Augustus Hurt House if anyone has such a thing.

I would like to make contact with anyone who was ever a resident.
