There was a Catholic orphanage (girls only) in San Jose from about 1895 through 1923. It was called Notre Dame Institute and my mother was there for a few years.

If you look up San Jose in the 1920 federal census, there is a separate district (the last one, I believe) for those living at and employed by the orphanage.
