Surnames: Axtell
My sister recently found that our great grandmother's maiden name was Marietta Axtell and that she was an orphan who had traveled the orphan trains from New York City to Lawler, IA. We do not know the date of birth for her or any other details. My aunt her recently passed on, had always indicated that my father's mother had been on the orphan trains and she though her last name was Axtell. I have found in the listings of riders who came off of the train in Lawler, IA (my father's place of birth) a Marietta Axtell, who I assume is my great grandmother. My aunt also named one of her chidlren Marietta, so I believe that is the connection. Was wondering about any further information as to what year she rode the train and others,

Hi, I was wondering where did you find the names of the Orphan Train rider -- we are interested in a Nellie maybe McNutt or Nuttly born in New York, adopted by McBrides in Lawler in the 1880's -- thank you for your help, Mary

I think there are a number of places to find the names of orphan train riders. I have a booklet called "Children of Orphan Trains" from New York to Illinois and beyond compiled by Janet M. Coble from information that was at the University of Illinois in Urbana.
These include only children sent out from the New York Juvenile Asylum and there were many more organizations sending out children.
The NYJA sent children to Illinois from 1853 until fall of 1898 when they began to send children to Iowa.

Richard, I believe your Great Grandmother was a friend of my Great Grandfather who was also on the Orphan Train and landed in Lawler, IA around 1890. Her name was Marietta Hand and she came to my great grandfather's funeral in Minneapolis in 1942. My mother knew her through the wife of Thomas Heath who was the son of Thomas & Bridgit Heath (the family my great grandfather was taken in by).

If you have any information about Albert Joseph Heath, please share. Or if you learn of any good resources in Lawler, IA or Chickasaw County IA that could help us. Thanks and good luck in your search.
