use of "nee" by a man

I've never seen "nee" used by a man. "William R Leroy nee Hooks" is written consistently on his marriage affidavit and his signature. It's meaning is "born", so used for maiden name for women. Has anyone heard of a man using this before? Does it mean he changed his name informally, and wants to mention his legal name since it's a legal document? Or that his mother's name was Hooks? He has an uncle named Hooks who he lives with. Also this is the feminine spelling, I don't know any French but the masculine spelling is supposed to be "ne". So I'll rely on anyone who has seen this and knows what it means.

I am trying to help a lady find birth record of her grandmother & her parents. Here is her letter with the information she is seeking: " I am trying to find the birth certificate of my grandmother. My mom is 91 1/2 yrs old and is curious about her real roots. Do you have anything on Herminna Burde. This is what was translated from her adopted father, David Schmidt, who wrote in the German script, (so it may not be an exact translation, actually it looks like" er" after the 2 n's,in Herminna, and the H looks more like a J with a curly q on the top?):
Herminna Burde born on 3rd of Feb 1898, Quincy, Illinois. On May 4, 1898 she was brought from the American Orphan Home finding Association (by Emma L. Nelson) Chicago, Ill. 167 Dearborn St. Room 712 to the Orphan Home, Halstead Kansas as commissioned by Rev. George Hoover, Supt., on the 20th of May 1898. Went to get the child from the Mennonite Orphan Home.
I would love to find a record of her birth parents."

Quincy court house has no record of this birth. Open to suggestions. Thank you!

I have looked everywhere for info, and only have the census showing them all there as "inmates" and that one news article. My group was there from mid 1890's until Grandmom married in 1911.
Re: St. Agatha Orphanage

Hi Jen:
Try St. Jerome's College. They have a great collection in their catacombs. The nuns if they have some spare time will help you.
I wish you luck. I was able to make a dear friend of one of the nuns. St. Agatha had a boys and girls orphange. My grandmother's youngest brother was there for about 10 years. Until he was 14. And my grandmother went to school at their school. If I remember correctly all their records went to St. Clemments Cathoic Church in St. Clemment's Ontario, Canada.

Good luck. I was very lucky because my grandmother was raised from the age of 2 by the Schneider/Deitrich family in St. Agatha until her father brought her back to MI to keep house and cook for him and her 2 brothers at about 17 years of age.
She was a beautiful woman. Well educated.

This family didn't have children of their own yet when they did she was treated like a daughter. And one of their natural daughters became a quite renown nun. Infact I had photos of this nun as a novice. I believe the conavent (School Sisters of Notre Dame) was in Watertown or Waterloo Ontario And when I was doing my rseearch I sent photo copies of this nun as a novice all the way up to a full fledged nun. I got my hands slapped figurativity speaking for having these photos. It blew me away. Evidently pictures were forbidden to be taken of these novices. Well it was the novice's own parents that sent the photos to my grandmother. I gave up for a while after that. And when I returned to my search as to why my grandmother was placed with this family instead of with members of her father's family. Then one day an old neighbor in MI and I were talking about my grandmother and her missing mother. I casually said I have no idea why my grandfather would entrust his 2 year old daughter's care to strangers. Well it turned out they weren't strangers. They were related to my great-grandparents neighbors. And wola the doors were openned for me. And I have formed many wonderful relationships on this genealogy journey. So have fun, don't give up you will be surprised at how people react to your questions. Most now realize if it wasn't for us early research they would have to break the ice with their new extended family. And believe me it is worth everything you put in it and more. We had a cousin come from France with his sweetheart for a family reunion. And he stayed with our cousin 3 times over, because I was recovering from back surgery. And lanuguage barrier and all we all had a fantastic 3 days together.
Anyways I hope that this helps. Sincerely J.Ann Audet

Orphan Court Records?

Hi Everyone,

I have been trying to find the parents of a great-grandfather of mine. His name was William Avery. He is my "brickwall" family member and I'm starting to think he was either trying to hide from someone or he was an orphan.

I am interested in finding his parents. The only problem is, I know nothing about orphans/orphanages/orphan court records/etc.

The other problem is I don't have a birth date or location. From Census records when he was older 30+, he was listed as being born in either NY, RI, DE, or PA. With that his birth years were listed as 1800, 1802, 1808, 1811 and 1812.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? If he were an orphan, how would I go about finding this information out with the range of states of birth and years of birth?

Thanks,
Michelle

I joined this site just today.

I really appreciate the info about there being a history room and the fact that registered dates can possibly be obtained. Any info I have about my Dad's stay there is from my Mom who did say that he ran away more than once.

Thank you for the email addy provided, they will help me with trying to piece my Dad's life as a child, together.

Adding to that, I read somewhere that prior to the early 1900's father's had more rights than the mother. If, he had a will which designated his minor children go to a relative upon his death. That wish was held up more times than not even if the mother was living.
By the way, I recently found out that 2 of the 3 brothers were taken in by my G Grand Aunt. Weird thing is in the news listing of the Aunt's will. The boy's name was sited as a nephew named Vincent and not the name on his birth record (my Great Grandfather was the only one of his siblings that had children).. Any thoughts as to why that took place?

Re: "Half" orphans ???

`There was a period of time in the US during which single parents were not deemed fit to look after their children and if a spouse died or deserted the children could be forcibly taken from the remaining parent. Society, including their friends and family were of the opinion that the parent SHOULD send their children away to be taken care of. Sometimes grandparents, upon finding this out, would intervene, sometimes not.
Other parents sent their children to the orphanage because they could not or felt they could not look after them adequately. My grandmother and great-grandmother both sent children to the orphanage for a time.
It sounds barbaric to us but there were no social services in place at that time and little recourse for parents trying to work and look after children.
Although neither I nor my parents experienced this, I am glad times have changed - it makes me shudder to think of those poor children ripped away from all they knew.

My brother Philip and I used to hang out with the kids at Legacy House in Kyle Bay around 1980/1982 when we lived in Kyle Bay. We were 12-14 yr olds. Our names were Philip and Sarah and we lived on Kyle Parade across the park. We particularly remember a guy called David Davidson and often wonder what happened to him from there.

I suggest you re-post this request on the general bulletin board, including all known information about your grandparents (assuming they are no longer living to protect privacy).

There are many volunteers like myself who enjoy digging into the past and helping others do research.

Do you know when and where your grandparents were married? You can send for a copy of their marriage certificate.

Do you have an exact birth date for your grandmother? There are ways to search for a birth record using that exact date.

If you add information, either on this bulletin board or the main one, I would be very happy to help you search (for free, of course).

You have a couple of women in your online family tree, but I don't know which one is your maternal grandmother.

Beth
not related

Hi, I am new to family researching and I am not sure where to go next with my quest. I only have names of grand parents but nothing further. My maternal grand mother seems to have been an orphan, she only knew where she was born (North Carolina) and recalls a train ride then living with new people, she is listed as a servant at the age of 6 years old.
Where do I go from here?
any help or suggestions would be great!

Thanks

My grandfather was mentioning something about the Knights of Columbus....so maybe I can try looking there?? I have to speak to him directly to make sure thats who helped place him and his siblings in St Agatha. I may also try the Children's Aid just to cover all bases.....

Hi:
My Uncle John Eckenswiller was in this orphanage for about 10 years. From about 1892 until he was 14.So that would have been until some time from 1892 until spring of 1902.

I have the original Intake papers that My Great-Uncle signed the day he put his middle child in the orphange. I tried to find it, but because I have so much info as well as photos I am unable to find it. But, it basically said that Gr. Grandpa John couldn't take John out until he turned 14. Or he would have to pay the orphange all back care of Uncle John.
I found a photo of the orphange today. I am attaching a photo of it.
I think I have a photo of him and his sister my Grandmother (Mary Ellen. Also known as Ellen and later Ella. making their first communion. She wasa Wonderful lady. She was raised from the age of 2 until she was about 17 by friends of the family in Berlin/Kitchner. There was another brother Wimmiam (Bill) who was boarded out for his care until his father could return to their Sanilac County farm in MIchigan..
Hope this helps you. And if anyone has photos of Young John while he was in the orphange and or stories I would appreciate a copy.
Thank You.
PS: I would also appreciate any info on John's mother's Maggie M. Fluke-Eckenswiller's disappearance. There is no record as far as I can find about this mystery surrounding my Gr. Grandmother's disappearance in the spring of 1892.

Thank you
J.Ann Audet

Tymmons [believed died South Africa 1948] or Timons or sounds like; variations +/-.

There is a slim chance that he may have been involved with in Nazareth House, Cape Town?

Whilst it doesnt help me identify the information I am seaching for, confirmation/identification of this priest will clarify a search direction in which to follow, namely the in Nazareth House organisation in general.

Your help is greatfully appreciated.

MH

hi my name is Randy w Oliver and i was also in St Agatha orphanage as a child .st agatha is now called a childrens village and has group homes with from what i gather are about 7 or 8 children at a time assigned to them but i could be wrong on that number the old orphanage that i was in no longer stands.I visited there a few years ago to see if there was ever any paperwork kept on me and my stay there and it consisted of a index card with the date i arrived the date i left and my mothers name.they do have a history room where where there are some photos of the original buildings a few kids and thats about it unfortunatly there was no real records from the 60s that were kept as far as i know of St agatha is about 15 miles out of kitchener and if you drive out highland road you will see the signs and the church that still stands there
