Late 19th Century Orphanage

My great-grandfather was born in Ischia and was an orphan - according to family stories his last name (our pre-America immigration family name) was the last name of the person who owned the orphanage, which was Mari. Does this sound like a viable story? He was born in the late 1880s.

my daughter contacted you I really don't know much I was born 4/24/1960 and placed int the institute from birth my brother was already there he was born 1/7/1959, my adoption papers say there were several children I actually found a brother here in the states that had been adopted by a family in Colorado, he has since died his name was Gessepi not sure what the last name was. I have often been confussed about the last names being different but I read some of the post here and that makes good sense to me now. I am just trying to see if I have any other siblings that I can contact and find out some background on what happened and why, have never really been obsessed with being adopted an thankful I was and that I was adopted by a caring family but I have always wanted to visit the country I was born in and think it would be great to find some relatives

I was adopted in 1963 from a orphanage in torino. What I remember about this place was that it was located on a hill side above the city because I could see the main town from their also we used to walk on saturdays to the center of town past the river and along the walk were there was people living in rundown camps along the river. It was said it used to be a military post before and we had pigs and chickens that they raised. It had 4 or 5 large buildings, one at the entrance was a church on the first floor and above was the sleeping areas. I was born is saluzzo 1954 october 22,named Daniele Viano. Would like to find the orphanage and any other info. Thank you

Her name is Anamarie Terese (her middle name was taken from her biological mother?) She was adopted by an American couple from New Jersey (Battistessa). We are trying to help her find family. I was also born in Italy in 1963 and adopted by American parents in 1965 in New York State. After a long search I was able to reunite with my birth relatives in Italy in 1991.
Dear Colmenetti: not sure what information you may have obtained from the IPI in Torino, but it was not unusual that multiple children may have different surnames even though they may indeed be from the same mother (perhaps different father) since Italian legislation allows for a birth mother to NOT acknowledge her children and hence the birth registrar will assign fictitious surnames to the children making them appear as not being related... while in reality they are indeed uterine siblings and treated as such when placed for adoption. I have seen a few such cases from Torino so do not be surprised... Would like to hear more specifics of your case.
Dear Colmenetti: Nice to hear from other Italian American adoptees! I was also born in TOrino in 1963 and adopted by American parents in 1965. I have since located my birth relatives in Italy back in 1991 after a four year search... it was a special experience. When I started by looking up the IPI in Torino they gave me the same story... they stated that they had no information... Italian laws makes it really hard to make any progress in Italy but we are fortunate that we had a long paper trail and that the US has an Alien File on each foreign born adoptee which contains all the relevant information! I would like to talk about your search / adoption experience so please contact me at my e-mail address JohnPCamp@aol.com of Skype me at JohnPCamp (650) 557-2153. I now live in Milan Italy so we are nine time zones apart... CIAO for now. John Campitelli (aka Piero Davi)

Interesting - my sister and I were adopted in 1960 from this orphanage. (different last names). What I found is there was no connection with my sister and I. In my opinion, it was done to reduce the number of children at the orphange. They would tell the perspective adoptive parents that the child they were adopting had a sibling...my parents told us they were interested in adopting one child and then learned a sister was involved and play on the emotion of not wanting to breakup a family.

I have come across your messages and thought it might by a good idea to add mine. I was born in Venice, Italy in 1959 and was adopted by an American family. Like you, I am also trying to find my story. I don't know where to begin. I have just recently really delved into my papers that I have had for many years. The surname given to me by someone witnessing my birth is Girole. This name was changed when I was adopted. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Renee

Hello -

My husband was adopted from an orphanage in Northern Italy (near the border of France) around 1961. He was born in 1956 and would love to know something about his birth family. All he has is the passport he came to the US with. He and his brother were in an orphanage together and were adopted together. They have different last names on their passports but were told they were brothers. Have you any tips on how he can search? He does believe it was an orphanage run by the Catholic church since he has memories of some of the nuns who cared for him. Thanks for any tips!
Carol

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could provide me with a detailed list of old orphanages from the 1890s in Vilminore, Italy or anywhere in the Province of Bergamo? Even a reference source for me to refer to would be greatly appreciated. It is so difficult to research! Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Carlo: thanks for your message. Its always great to hear from other Italian born American adoptees... I have been in contact with hundreds of other adoptees and we have had mixed success in locating our birth parents in Italy since the Italian legislation makes it really hard to track your birth origins if you were not recognized at birth by your birth mother. If I can be of assistance in your search, please contact me directly at JohnPCamp@aol.com.
Thanks fo offering to help! I can really use some tips on where to start looking. All of the information I have is in my previous post. I tried looking up the orphanage and the address seperately. I've researched the Spadaccini name and found several people with that last name still live in that area. I even sent some emails to people with the same last name. My father in law did mention that he had an older male relative that had visited him at the orphanage that was a priest.
