I remember the dumb waiter in the dining room. The only guy I remember who came there was named gerald Sanderson if I remember correctly. Was there a nun named sister vincent there when you were? That nun hit me in the face with a strap and I ran outside and hid under the front steps. Not too many good memories there for me.Did you ever go to camp Morton? I think I left there in 1962 for a foster home in Stonewall.I,m pretty sure Gerald used to be a resident at ST. Josephs.

Hi, I remember sister mary Marcia (who was very nice to everyone)and sister mary Charles very well. I was there from summer 1962 to late summer 1966
I would like to aquire photos of the inside of St. Joseph's
Do you remember the wavy glass room deviders and bathing 2 at a time and the dumb waiter that traveled from the kitchen to the dining room. I remember being taught to play hockey and other sports by some guy I don't recall the name of. I enjoyed my time there as much as I could but I dreaded Sundays because that's when my Mother showed-up. When she came she would ask sister superior if I was good all week and if she was told I did or said anything bad she would beat me. She always brought a wooden spoon in her purse and would beat my knuckles with it. When sister superior found out one day what my Mother was doing to me, she called Children's Aid and I was placed with a foster family on a farm in Notre Dame de Lourdes where my Mother could not have any contact, that was nice.
Michael

Hello Angela,
Well, here I am still searching for that elusive family of Doherty's. I've been informed about 2 mos. ago that my father-in-law was registered in the River Charlo School in 1918, that would make him at least 6 yrs. old. Therefore, his given birth date of April 7, 1915 is a total fabrication. I also found his on Ancestry.com as the son of Milton Doherty(who would have been the brother of the adoptive David Doherty) and then he disappears and is not on the 1911 census in N.B. Someone in N.B. Archives is working on this for me. He is suppose to be contacting James Sweeney but haven't heard anything since before Xmas. I am very sad and disheartened that it has come to this only. My husband who would have loved to know his origins in some miracle way, has bone cancer and a few months left. I can only pray that someone comes up with a hint! Have you been successful in finding your mother's orphanage where she lived, etc.
Take care

I'm not sure if we are talking about the same Orphanage, but that's due to the fact that until more recently I had not heard of, nor knew my Grandfather had been placed in it. I have little knowledge about it, but I thought it was simply named "Providence Orphanage", and that it was located in New Westminster, B.C. I am kind of hoping that you have found the answers to your inquiry about this subject, and that you maybe able to share & educate me as well. The only other info I have is that I need to search their intake records on children accepted there sometime around 1911-1928. I'm aware that's very little in the researching world, but as you'll probably agree it is something, and that's so much more than nothing. ANything you may have on this would be so greatly appreciated.

Trying to find information on my gr.gr.grandmother, Katie Brown. She died in 1907 in Gray, ME. Her tombstone lists her year of birth as 1863. My grandmother has done some research and was told that she was born in Ontario, Canada. I found an 1871 census that mentioned Hamilton's Ward. According to the census, she was listed as being in industrial school at the age of 8. Not sure what that means. Unfortunately, I cannot find any mention of her parents. Her death record lists her parents as "unknown." Because her name is so common, it is difficult to determine if this is her or not. I have also tried using Katherine or Catherine as first names, but both her marriage certificate (this does not mention parents either) and death certificate list her as Kate or Katie. At this point, I am thinking that she was an orphan, but I would like to prove it!

Hello: I have discovered two brothers to my Great Grandfather(Frederick) that are listed in the 1911 Census at this orphanage- Harold and Herb (Hubert)Morgan. Frederick was already an adult by this time. He was killed in WW1 when my Grandfather was only 4 years old. Harold and Herb came to CAnada in 1909 with their mother Frances Joanna Morgan nee Manley but she died in 1910. I am hoping decendants of other boys at the home at that time may have remembered Herb and Harold and have some info as to what happened to them. We suspect that one of them ended up in New York City but more research needed. If anyone can help..would be fantastic!! Thanks

I would like to know the names of any orphanages operating in these two cities 1911 to 1914.
My grandmother and her sister were sent to live in one. I believe Dr. Tillmann was in charge of the children's health. They were first in the Children’s Shelter under the care of the Children’s Aid Society at 113 Wellington Street, St. Thomas.

I lived at the Orphange not sure what year I arrived but left to live in the Stephem Wiggins Home for Boys in 1963 I created a web site dedicated to it here http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/pawl/ the only things I remember about the P.O. was two girls I suspect were in their late teens whose job was to look after us locking the door to the ward so the other boys could beat me up and the old guy that ran the boiler room locking me the coal room when he finally let me and the other child that was with me out it was dark outside so I was in the room for quite awhile. Some woman that had a working room next to my ward taking my pants down and beating my bare bottom with a strap she was hitting me for so long that another boy had to tell her to stop or he would report her. I was 5 years old at the time. My backside hurt for along time after that and I had great difficilty sitting at meals.

Thank you.....I was able to retrieve a photo from the Centre Elizabeth Bruyère archives, that I will post in my Family Tree later today. The photo looks like it was taken in the 40`s and there is a banner announcing a fundraising Bazaar on the side of the building.

The archive indicates that the Orphanage stood at Sussex and Cathcart Street but I will visit the Archive when I have time to get more information.

Thanks for your help on this .

Two of my uncles were raised at that orphanage and they both visited the site years ago and shared with me the feelings surrounding the remaining statue. That was a long time ago. Too bad it has now been removed and that condos are standing there now.

The Hamilton Ontario Library (on the web) has records from 1848 to ? of the records of the 'Hamilton Orphan Asylum'. The research librarian will be able to tell you the coverage dates. There are also some Ontario Provincial documents relating to inspections of hospitals and orphanages on 'Google Books' that may be of interest. I didn't see any street ID for the various institutions, but with the correct name and city directory or phone book it likely one could find the address. There seem to be a number of possible institutions in Hamilton for orphans, e.g. boys, girls, Catholic, and the Hamilton Hospital.
I picked up on this string when I was searching for information on a British Home Child who was destined for 'Hamilton, Ont" but with no specific institution identified.
How far back in time did the Children's Aid Society woman say that her records covered?

Hello Angela,
Gosh, you are a mircle to me....honestly...James Sweeny, with whom I spoke to after I received my Pop's baptismal cert. along with a burial cert. from him. I also have found(after Pop passed on Jan.2/94 and Mumsy in Nov.98) documents that we didn't know existed. Pop was in the RCAF and registered in Mtl. in 1940. The legal document was signed by several people including a lawyer from my home town(now deceased), a Mrs. Curphey whose granddaughter told me by email that she had been in Quebec City and was a midwife at one time bk. in the early 1900's. I will ck. this doc. today to see what other signatures are on it. I believe we have a couple of statements from other peopl, one being Mrs. Curphey(who relocated to N.S. later). The document is a fake as far as I am concerned. The registration officer(RCAF) told my Pop that they cudn't find his mother and that she was probably a hooker!!! Nice to hear that as yu are readying to go off to war heh!
This was a family thing...some Doherty's are involved ... just don't who..yet...
It so happens that Pop was brought up in Charlo, N.B. I am from Dalhousie(5 mi.away) and met my hubby in Mtl. in 1970..small world...I will get bk. to yu ok..

Thanks a million and a big hug for your help.

Just out of curiosity, what is 'laq'?

I have contacted James Sweeney of the Bishops Queen University (he's the archivist you mentioned)...he is going to see if my great grandmother is on a register roll for the Female Orphan Asylum (Church of England). I am waiting patiently as he probably has so much to do before he gets to my look-up. Do you know what kind of information you got from him? I hope it's you who had e-mailed him one time about your ancestor and that I am not confusing you with someone else!! I'm a customer of ancestry...I love genealogy.

Sincerely, Angela

The first existed before 1956 and they wrote me informing me that they do not have the records of the old hospital. I'm thinking that before the Prov. took it over, it belonged to the Anglican Church probably. My mother in law always said that it was a hospital that kept orphans.

Now who in the heck would have such records except the original owners.
I just readh yur email ref. Rose/Rosa Heath. Amazing, all I could find on her was her arrival on the Virginian in Halifax in 1911, or 1913???wud have to ck. my records.
Yu must belong on ancestry and laq?
Aly

The only information I have about an orphanage in Hamilton came from the 1871 census. I was looking for my great grandfather and he appeared on the census as a12 year old but having someone else (i.e. with a different surname) as head of the household. It turns out thta the head of the household was female and the orphange matron. He was living there with his four younger brothers . Orphanges were divided by sex and females went to other institutions or other parts of the same institution without mixing. Curiously most children put into orphanges were placed because one parent could not afford the expense of raising a child. I am still looking for the parents. Hope this helps.

It's my pleasure :-)

Also make a note of the witnesses on both documents. For example, on Jeffrey's baptismal certificate, there are three witnesses other than Rev. Kelly. These names appear to be:
W.G. Leakle, Lenora F. Leakle and Mr J. Sharples. I have no idea what their association is.

On Geoffrey's burial record...there is William Sabin and James Keggeth or Neggeth (hard to read).

As for the ultrasound (which may be a last resort), the cemetery might know whom to use if you call them and explain what data you know. I can't find any trace of Rosa/Rose in Canada by using her maiden name or any possible married name. However, I find it easiest to work back from death to birth. You may have to order a death certificate from L'etat de Civil in Quebec...also check into whether you know what hospital your father-in-law was born in...sometimes you can call them and they have records.

Wow some very interesting information!

If I am not mistaken, you had someone from Quebec physically see a tombstone/burial marker for your father-in-law who was said to have died in June of 1915 (obviously not the true case), right? If so, you could contact the cemetery, explain everything and/or ask how you would go about hiring someone to do ultrasound over that plot to see if someone is actually buried there or if it's vacant. Either it's empty or there is someone else's remains there which could warrant some investigation.

Secondly, consider that Geoffrey George Doherty may be your father-in-law's father's full name. You are right that he probably did come from a Doherty as it probably would have been a blood relative who took him in.

I'll keep searching...let me know what you have found also. My aunt in Montreal married a Doherty but I don't think is any relation?

The Burial Certificate that was sent to me was verified by a lady in Quebec City. She physically went Mount Hermon Cemetery and saw the burial for Geoffrey Gorge Heath, who died June 1915. If Rose Heath was the mother, then according to my father in law, the father would have been a friend of the Doherty family, etc. As he grew up he often overheard conversations with his older adoptive father and mother David W. and Mary(Bains) Doherty and friends, among them the Irving's of Saint John. A Doherty grandchild married one of JDI's brother. This couple were in their 60's when they took him in. I think something is weird...I have an Anglican prayer book(very small) with inscription "A. R. Kelley" and one inch below it is written " M. Mary Bains, 1916"....The Rev. A.R. Kelley was one of the folks that attested on the fake document..Too many questiions? I don't know where else to go to except that if I was at the Bishops' Archives, I would look for the approximate date and some Doherty, Reid, Spencer and gosh knows who else..many many Doherty's in the family then. One William Woodbury Doherty apparently killed someone (by accident so the courts believed) with the end of his umbrella..Can't seem to find out who he belongs to. This happened in Campbellton, N.B. and this man was a Doctor and distant relative to another Dr. Milton Doherty who was there then...W.W. Doherty left town and died in Shediac???N.B. Have to find out what date this happened but it was definitely in the early 1900's. Will email you another day ok.

So far...I have found the same baptismal and baptismal/burial record that you probably have found from the Anglican church. However, I am still looking...my theory is that your dad's biological mother, who was 'unmarried' according to the records, wanted to save her reputation and save face so she paid the minister some money to pretend that her son had passed away quite suddenly when she really put him up for adoption. She then went back to England and some people took pity on her and some people felt sorry for her. Just a thought. The minister probably would have felt sorry for her.

Hi Rachel.

I sensed how urgent you were to find your ancestor - my ancestor Ernestine Bietsch (Beach in English) was placed in the Female Church of England Orphan Asylum, Quebec City, PQ.
I was able to find the information for her...let me see what I can come up with for you. Perhaps you already have this information but I will search anyhow! As for my ancestor, she was orphaned with her sister Elisabeth...their parents supposedly died on the ship. is one story the other is that their mother abandoned them and snuck out. They were never adopted, to my knowledge.

Cheers, Angela
