Did you ever write to Barnardo's for information on him? I would be interested to know if you have been able to make any progess with your search. I might be able to help. Let me know, CJ
Hello Patricia, I am trying to trace my great aunt, Sarah Cashin. I seem to pick her up as being on the electoral register in Hornchurch childrens home. It would suggest that she was an adult and therefore more than likely staff there. Do you by any chance recall anyone by that name there? If it is the same person, she would have been born in Dublin in 1895. I would appreciate any help you might be able to give.

Thank you

ian

Hello, thank you for asking me to help as I know how frustrating it is when you don't know where to start. The London Metropolitan Archives will be the place to start. You write to them giving your dad's details- where etc and they should have his in-care records there. Funnily enough someone else has just asked me the same question on facebook. Are you on facebook? I would like you to join and then you can see some photos on there, more memories and talk to other people.
http://www.katyc112.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ Is about my mum's time in the home. https://www.facebook.com/groups/41611750665/ if you can't get to the group its name is 'Cottage Homes'. I've put the book idea aside for the mo as I am at uni studying for a History degree, to help with my research. There is a chap from the home who has written a book that I have not read yet and .... I've just found it for you: Against All Odds by Paul Connolly.good luck and best wishes Katy Cox

Hello my father was a "St. Leonard's child."
He was born in 1946, and taken there shortly after. He would have left about 1958.
I have tried before to find out information about his time there. He told me a few stories himself. And like you mention, the many challenges he since faced.
(I will be looking now for a copy of your book. Thank you.) But since he passed away, I have been told that its possible to obtain records from St. Leonard s. I wonder if you know anything about this. And could maybe point me in the right direction.

Many Thanks
Kind Regards

Thank you for todays info on Mable.I only heard that she was born in Ontario no one in the family ever mentioned that she might have come form Ireland or UK but who knows. It's interesting you mentioned her working for Jos Davis. I have several old family photos and one of them is a picture of a young man named Davis. Hard to read but it looks like Harry Davis. The picure was taken at W.M.Percy & Co. Huntsville, Ontario. Always wondered who he was. I also have a picture on 'tin' that my aunt gave me she indicated it was Mable's Brother and sister named Harry & Gertie, Mable indicated that they were adopted. On the back of the picture we could see newspaper. When we took it apart it was indeed parts of classified add from the New York Times. I could not find a date on the newspaper but Vehicles advertised for sale range from 1924-1927. Another mystery to solve! By the way there was no date on the transfer it reads Dr. Barnardo's Home 214 Farley Ave. Toronto the bearer is going to W. James Jackson of Wilberforce Twp (Rankin) Pembroke Station via Smith Falls Carleton Pl. I always wondered about marriage certificate for James and Mable I understand they would list family members?

Thanks again you have been so helpful I am so grateful for info received, I am so new at this but find it fun and challenging!

Sincerely
Margaret Rousseau

a little more research - James Jackson's 1st wife was Maria Cecilia Libby - they mar'd 8 Nov 1893 - son James Briton Jackson was born 7 Jan 1896, Maria died (one week later) 15 Jan 1896 (so Mabel must have been a domestic servant for them) son then died 29 Sep 1896..... he would need someone to look after the baby. James then mar'd Mabel 8 Jan 1897 and they moved to Rainy River. When you contact Barnardo's you don't know for sure what year she came but she was a domestic and mar'd James Jackson - she rec'd that Barnardo medal for living with one guardian or I suppose she could have worked as a servant at Hazelbrae (no way to check it though!)Tell them you have the medal. What year did James sign for her - was it 1897??

Darn I just found a Mabel in 1891 census - doesn't give birth place (England or Ireland??)working for Jos Davis fam and 6 kids so we know she was here prior to 1891 working in Renfrew - so perhaps this is why she got the medal and then for some reason James comes & signs BECAUSE he needed help badly. :o) and ended up even marrying her!

This is Mable's marriage - which says born Ontario
Name: James Jackson
Birth Place: Wilberforce
Age: 28 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1869
Father Name: Thos Jackson Mother Name: Margt Jackson
Spouse Name: Mabel Donnelly
Spouse's Age: 19 Spouse Birth Year: abt 1878
Spouse Birth Place: Peterborough, Ontario
Spouse Father Name: Orphan Donnelly Spouse Mother Name: Donnelly
Marriage Date: 8 Jan 1897
Marriage County or District: Renfrew

You can contact Barnardo's for verification -

http://www.barnardos.org.uk/who_we_are/history/family_histor...

what is questioning is that on her marriage she is referred to as an Orphan and yet she isn't on 1881 or 1891 census. Husband James is a widow. I believe she is a Home Child. The only one I can find is Fanny Donelly 15, coming 1897
Good Luck - let us know on this forum

You are about to embark on a very interesting adventure.
A good place to start is with this link - http://barnardohazelbraegroup.com/index.html
There is lots of information and photos on this website.

You can view rare film footage, shot between 1919 and 1921, of the Barnardo Home for girls, Hazel Brae, in Peterborough, Ontario. This silent film, entitled Tide of Immigration, is presented by Library and Archives Canada, and also shows other immigrants to Canada. Can any researchers identify the girls shown? See the film on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsTigiK_r5I

The next link to follow is here - http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.orphans.brithomechild/mb.a...

Next enter Donnelly and read all the messages that have the word "Donnelly"
in them.

For some history on the Barnardos look here - http://www.barnardos.org.uk/what_we_do/who_we_are/history.ht...

Then here - http://www.barnardos.org.uk/barnardo_s_history.pdf

And then here - http://www.barnardos.org.uk/barnardo_s_christian_heritage.pd...

There is some preliminary reading at this link - http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children/i...

to search for a specific child's name go here - http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children/0...

Then Enter Donelly and you will see there are 8 children with that surname. btw - Only 1 of these children is female by the name of Francis.

Enter Donnelly and there are 43 children.
None of these 51 children have the first name Mabel or as you spelled it Mable.

While at the Library & Archives site, select "Board of Guardians" and search for "Donelly"
You will find there is only one entry for - Ann Donelly with no details to be found.

I have found that many of the children changed both their first and last names to something that they may have been called by others. Since some of these children had broad British accents the record keepers often changed their records to reflect what the listener heard.
For example, the child said, "Smiff" or "Smitty" and the record keeper wrote,"Smythe" or "Smitty" or "Smith". This often happened with Census Takers. Especially when the child was not a member of the family where they were living, as often happened with British Home Children in Canada.

For another great read go to this link - http://www.telusplanet.net/dgarneau/british.htm
There is not much data of individuals but lots of stories that will give you a fell for the lives the children led.

Barnardo's - Macpherson, Marchmont, Stratford - Birt, Knowlton records
The Barnardo Offices in England hold these records.
Barnardo Charges are as follows:
£ 70 Admission Package
-Admission sheet
-Placement details
-Precis
-Individual Photograph
-Home Information Sheets
£ 85 Full History Package
-Admission Package-Placement Details
-Precis
-Home information sheet
-Record Book entry
-Situation Book Entry (boy's only)
-Location Photographs

£ 20 Photographic Package
-one personal photograph & photograph of their Barnardo Home

To trace family information start with this link -

http://www.barnardos.org.uk/what_we_do/who_we_are/history/fa...

then here -
http://www.barnardos.org.uk/what_we_do/who_we_are/history/fa...

Select the following link - "Full details of packages"

Then this link "available (PDF)"

which will take you to this site - http://www.barnardos.org.uk/products-2.pdf

I hope you will be able to find your Grandmother's records.

Try this next site for the Canadian Census Records to see if you can find her at this site - http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/

Try spelling her surname both ways - Donelly
This will yield 141 records.
Next read down about half of the page and you will find a
helpful tool that reads - Sort by geographic location
Select that tool.
Now look through until you find "ON" for Ontario.
Nope, no Peterborough there.
Now scroll to the bottom and Select - More Record (it's in blue)
Now I went back to the beginning and tried the other spellings. Users that have searched for donelly have included the following names in their searches. Numbers indicate number of searches.
Donnelly (78) Donnely (43) Donnelley (41) Donaly (40) Donnley (39) Donnolly (39) Donnoly (39) Donelley (37) Domley (33) Donally (33)

Please notice all the unique names that might relate.
Please enjoy your search. I'll bet you will find the census records for your Grandmother.

Just for fun try the following search technique -
Go to www.google.com and enter the following 4 names -
Mabel Conelly
Mable Conelly
Mabel Connelly
Mable Connelly

You can also have fun be putting any of those 4 names into the search Google search engine and adding the word - "Peterborough" on the end to change the search parameters.

You will have days of reading ahead of you so I hope you enjoy doing research.
Enjoy
Al Dodd
(connerpics@gmail.com)

Mable Donnelly

I am searching for information regarding my Grandmother Mable Donnelly. All I know about her is she was an orphan and stayed at Dr Barnardo Home. I have a transfer paper from Hazel brae and a Dr. Barnardo medal with her name on it
On the medal her name was spelled Donelly. I have seen her birth place as Rankin Ontario and also Peteboro Ontario. I would be interested to know if there is a file on her at
Dr Barnardo Home in Hazel brae I am inclined to think that she might of worked there. The transfer paper was signed by
James Jackson whom she later married. If I could just get a lead as to where I could search would be such a great help!

Re: Eliza Emma MARKHAM and her siblings

So, to answer my own query:
John Joseph MARKHAM (1850 - ?) and Emma DAVIS (Abt 1853 - ?) married 24 Jan 1871 in Newington, Southwark, Greater London, England. They had seven children:
1. Elizabeth Marie MARKHAM (1870 - 1937) m. John TOMLIN (1870 - 1967)
2. John Joseph MARKHAM (1872 - 1930) m. Meriam JENKINS (1873 - 1954)
3. Mary Ann MARKHAM (1874 - 1949) m. William J. BUTLER (1869 - 1935)
4. Charles James MARKHAM (1876 - 1959) m. Dinah MESSEROLL (1875-1901); Elizabeth LUCAS (1875-1948)
5. Eliza Emma MARKHAM (1879 - 1958) m. William John COMBEN (1878-1924); William J. LEONARD (1872-1958)
6. Ada Emily MARKHAM (1881 - 1969) m. Robert DAVIS (1870 - 1938)
7. Marie Elizabeth MARKHAM (1884 - ?) m. William EVANS (1870 - ?)

From the obituaries of Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Eliza, all of the children were accounted for. Six of the seven were married in Hamilton, and many were witnesses for each other. Some named their children after their siblings. These facts are in stark contrast to reports of British Home Children being separated from family, never to be reunited. In many ways this is a good news story worth telling.

I am still curious to find more detail about Eliza, simply because of her connection to my family. Ultimately she left no descendants: she was first married at the age of 40 and remarried in her 50's. She never had children of her own. Once I have gathered all my data together and published a report I will contact Barnardo's Aftercare and ask if they will provide information to me on compassionate grounds.

Thank you to a vibrant genealogy community for all the help on this journey.

I got to Hamilton today and found obituaries for John Joseph, Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Eliza Markham.

Turns out that Ada married a Robert Davis and died in Saskatchewan.

Looking at the manifest for the ship that brought the Markham sisters to Canada, there was also a 3-year-old Ada Lloyd, 6-year-old Ada Greening, 7-year-old Ada Gerred, 8-year-old Ada Allen and 9-year-old Ada Alger, Coombs and Hayes: not to mention how many other Ada's came before or after to the Stratford receiving home.

Hi Sandra
If you contact Bernardos for a fee they will send you all the records they have on him. Sometimes they have pictures as well.
My grandmother with her sister, came over through Mrs Brits and they now hold the records for them. I paid the price and it took about 6 months to receive all that they had on her and my great aunt as well.
They had family records of her older brothers and sisters (names Birthdays) as they were to old to be BHC so found that out as well as to what happened to her father and mother. Also they had letters that were sent back to England by them, well copies, as well as to where they were sent and how long they stayed in each place and how much was paid to keep them.
Hope this helps as I found it was worth paying the money and the wait as there was alot of info in there records.

My Grandmother was a BHC and I fould alot about her bythe records that the agent that sent her over had. They and info about her sister that came over as well as where both my grandmother and great aunt stayed/worked etc. The records also listed her other brothers and sisters that were to old to be sent over as BHC.
They were born in London but came over through MRS Brits Home. The recourds were taken over years later by Barnardos, and it seams that they hold records from other homes that shiped out BHC as well.
I would contact them and see if they have any info on Ada and if they do it is worth the cost to get copies of the records they have as they do hold all kinds of great info in them.
I believe my mom was also in the land army. I think you may have a wealth of information that others are looking for. It seems that there is little to be known about the girls and the school because most of the girls have passed on. Ask your mom if she remembers Mr. Coia and the candy store. We went back in 2006 and met up with his son, Tony. If you can tell me the time frame your mom was there, perhaps she would remember my mom. My e mail address is jmartort@verizon.net. My mom's name was Teresa Fucile and I believe that she is the little girl in the front row. Hopefully you can let me know when this photo was taken.

Hello,
Do you have the date this photo was taken. My mom was there from 1927 to 1936 when she was 16. She was sent to a hospital in London but did not stay there. The little girl at the bottom of the page with the brown hair looks like my mom would look at that age. She did bring a school photo of her with her when she came to America. I remember the uniforms. She hated the photo and tore it up so no one could see her in the uniform. Thanks for the photo.

I got to the Stratford-Perth Archives today and found Ada (Scott) McDermott's obituary. No mention of siblings or children (simply says "Her husband survives.")

Although the Annie MacPherson home has a historical designation the archives has no records from it.

My next step is Hamilton Public Library for obits of the others.

Depending on what I find there I may write to England and ask for access to the records on compassionate grounds: it appears that Eliza and Ada died without descendants. These names will never been remembered.

Hello, that would be my Great-Aunt Jean. I would be happy to hear from Rae Gale. I am completely new to genealogy research. You may contact me at rcsmeiers@shaw.ca. My father was Norman Bailey, son of Ethel (Jean's younger sister)and Everett Bailey. My name is Corinne Meiers (nee Bailey). Look forward to hearing from you - and, yes, I did not receive your post from yesterday.

I haven't got any obit's yet. That means a trip to Hamilton (that I'm planning soon).

I'm also planning a trip to Stratford too. The Stratford-Perth Archives not only has microfilm of the Stratford Beacon Herald (predominant paper for Stratford; should have an obit for Ada Scott) but also seems to have an extensive "Campbell Collection" of photographs and ephemera.
