I am trying to find out more about my great grandfather John McLaughlin. I know he was born in Scotland and, when his father died, he went to a poorhouse with his mom (Cath), sister (Susan), and brother (Robert) and then on to an orphanage and finally over to Canada in 1887; he was 8. By 1907 he was living in Manitoba and had married Harriet Jemima Booth. I am curious about those 20 years. I believe he was a British Home Child and have found him listed on the government site arriving on the Oregon in 1887. Where do I go from here?
