I have recently acquired 53 editions of the Barnardo magazine Ups and Downs. These magazines were published by the Dr. Barnardo Homes at Toronto, Ontario, usually quarterly between 1895 and 1949. About 200 editions were published. Many Home children subscribed to the magazine, many thousands did, partly to keep in contact with their surrogate families of other children from the Homes, partly to maintain their spirits in a time of their young lives when many gained little emotional support from the families with whom they were placed. Thousands of the Dr. Barnardo children are mentioned in these magazines.
