Dmetriuc and Ohotnicqy Surnames

I am grasping at straws...unable to find any info on my paternal grandparents who came to the US separately as young adults in the early 1900's. My cousins and I have been trying to research both families with extremely little luck. From a passport prepared by the Romanian consolate, we believe my grandfather's name may have been Ion Dmetriuc. His name was changed to John Metro after his arrival in the US. He traveled to the US from the Forbes (?) area of Transylvania with two brothers who did not enter the US but went on to Canada. My grandmother, Wiktoria (Victoria) Ohotnicqy, came to the US from the Bukovina area of Romania as a teen, indentured as a nanny/housekeeper/cook in NYC. I have tried to search on these names without any luck. Are there any possible variances I should try? Thank you for any help provided.

1. Try to find them in the US Censuses. If you're successful, you have clues as to if they became citizens, and if so, when. The censuses might also tell you when they immigrated.

2. Try to get their citizenship papers, based on above info. That could give you clues toward their previous names, and could have the precise travel information - names, ship, and dates.

3. Try to get the birth record of any of their children, or their marriage record, if privacy laws allow. That might have different names.

We can give you details on any of the above searches if you need it, and possibly give more help if you can give us any other dates, locations, etc.

We like to help --.

Thank you for your suggestions. I have searched the US censuses and found some information, however it hasn't helped me really discover when they immigrated. A big problem with locating any information of their previous names is the spelling seemed to change with each document. For instance, my grandmother's maiden name is Ohodnicky on one of her children's marriage licenses and Ohotnicqy on another. On the censuses, my grandfather's age ranges from birth in 1872 to birth in 1890! I believe 1872 to be the correct birth date as he was many many years older than my grandmother who was born about 1896 and it is also the date used on his funeral mass card. I also know the 1930 census (where the 1890 bithdate is claimed) information to certainly be the correct family, as my father and uncle are listed as sons. The inconsistency in dates is crazy. Neither became citizens, they each carried green cards (I do have a copy of my grandmother's).

I will try to contact their old parish in Michigan and see if there is any information they can share from my father's birth certificate. Thank you for that tip, I totally skipped that step!

Thanks again for your wonderful help, it has given me many more ideas to forge ahead on!
Linda

As per Ellis Island, there are two brothers, Janos (John/Ivan) and Istvan(Stefan) DEMETER (Dmytro/Dmytriuk/Metro) coming from B. Foharas??? (Beregforgaras) or from B. Forras??? in 1906. Istvan was 17 and his older brother Janos was 25. They were meeting up w/another brother, Gzorzy (George) in Watertown NY.

Janos would have been born appx 1871/72???

Thank you for the information from the Ellis Island website. It gives me some new information to check out. I really appreciate your help.

It is interesting because the names seem to be correct, with the limited information we have.

Thanks again!

Your ancestral village may very well be in Slovakia today. A little research will provide you w/historical perspective and show that this area was under Romania at one time. It is frequently referred to a Presov Region???

Grandmother Wiktoria Ohotnicqy (most likely OCHOTNICSKY or OCHOTNICKIJ) . CH sound transliterated into Cyrillic Alphabet would sound like the CH in Loch Ness. It is closer to KH >sounding like HO.

????
As per Ellis Island there is a 13 yr old (1905) servant emigrating a place called Gnezda/Hnezda (also called Szepesmegye - very close to Forbes). I cannot read the first name. It looks like ?ila. The records indicate this to be male??? I cannot locate a copy of the original manifest page to take a closer look. There was also an Anna Ochotnicsky on that steamer. She was traveling with an 11 month old baby (from Forbasz) and heading for Uniontown PA. I do not see any indication that they were traveling as a family.

Using link below do an Ellis Island search, using STARTS WITH - OCHOTN
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html

This surname most likely means a willing person, a volunteer???

In 1901 there is also a Maria Ohotniczki, 15 yrs old, coming from Forbasz and heading for Hartfort CT.???

Descendants of Rusyns (pronounced as Ruthenes) from the Prešov Region in Slovakia have an easier time in researching their ancestry. As far as I am aware, all Rusyn parishes there have at least some records available. These records may begin as early as 1727 in Kojsov or as late as 1885 in Miková, the birthplace of Andy Warhol's parents.

These church records are housed in the state archives in Levoãaand Prešov and have been microfilmed by the Mormon Church. They should be available to the public sometime this year. You will have to go to a Family History Library of the Mormon Church. For instance, there is one located at 125 Columbus Avenue, opposite Lincoln Center, in New York City (telephone: 1-212-873-1690). Mormon or LDS Family History Libraries are also located in many other cities in the United States. Check your yellow pages under Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Anyone can use their libraries. You can order microfilm at a cost of $3.00 per roll. Most records will be in Latin with occasional entries in Hungarian or Slavic Cyrillic.

The Rusyns of Transcarpathia, Ukraine will have a chance to research their ancestry within the next year or so. Microfilming of church records is a priority. You can also visit the archives in Poland, Slovakia, and Ukraine, and attempt to do the research yourself.

Thank you again for your help. We will certainly find this useful in our future searches. At least now we have an idea of some names/locations to check out. My cousin has been searching for some time and has accessed the records at the Mormon church and I have just started searching, we were both stalled by Grandma's name. Thank you for providing such great ideas to pursue!

Thanks for the great info, I really do appreciate it!

Here a feedback many years later.

I think this tread talks about the village Forbasy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forbasy
that is close to Hniezdne/Kniesen/Gnazda/Gnezda
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hniezdne

The church records from Forbasy are within the records from Gnazda. So you have to search there. A simple search for Ohtniczky in "Gnazdá, Stará Lubovna, Slovakia" on FamilySearch list you 276 birth records from 1719 till 1896.

Here two family records, marriages and births that my contain the Victoria you are looking for.
