Deceased was a member of the U.B.F. (University Bible Fellowship), K. of P. (Knight of Pythias) and G.U.O.O.F. (Grand United Order of Odd Fellows) and Standard Life Ins. Co.

Biography

John W. Walton was born in Milam County, near Port Sullivan, May 20, 1869. At an early age he moved with his parents to Aberdeen, Miss., where they remained several years, after which they moved to Calvert, Texas, where he remained until his death. He was joined in matrimony to Miss Ellen Dials, August 26, 1890, and three children were born to this union: one boy and two girls. He professed a hope in Christ and joined St. Paul M.E. Church under the pastorate of Rev. L. H. Richardson, Sept. 1899, and lived a consistent Christian life until his demise. He served as class leader, steward, trustee, trial of appeal, Sunday school superintendent, and at his death held the office of district steward. He served well in any place he was called on to fill. He departed this life Monday morning, January 29, at the age of 53 years, eight months and nine days. A wife, three children, George A. and Miss Marguerite Walton (Epperson) and Mrs. Ione Greer, and a brother, Robert B. Walton, survive him.

As newsletter editor for the Milam County Genealogical Society I published your query in our current newsletter. Here is the reply from one of our members:
"There is a query in the Jan/Feb newsletter that I would like to answer but the e-mail address is not complete. It is the second one relative to Spence. If you have a more complete address, could you let this person know that I.S. Spence is listed in the Milam County Cemetery Books on p. 95 in the section called Burials- Unknown Sites. The listing shows I.S. Spence Death R., Coal Mine died - 1912. Since she has his death certificate listing the precise date, I am wondering if it does not give the name of the doctor who signed it which may be a way of tracing to community.
Further, I would tell her that the funeral home was Henne & Meyer. They also operated a funeral home in Thorndale as my great-grandfather- Andrew Urban- bought them out in the 20s. His oldest son, John Urban, was the Thorndale undertaker while Henne & Meyer still owned it and, of course, continued after his father acquired the funeral home.
Since he died in a coal mine I would expect him to be buried in the vicinity of wherever that work was done in the early 1900s. Not sure if that would be in the vicinity of the ALCOA plant. I think miners in that era would live within walking distance of their work and there may have been a named community where coal mining was being conducted.

Spence/Spense, Milam County, TX

Looking for an obit or gravesite for a I.S. Spence (Isaac Simpson Spence)

He died per death certificate on March 14, 1912.

Hermes & Meyers? (unclear print) buried him on March 15, 1912.

His death certificate states at that time of his death he was married. (His wife was Mary Jane Mullen & went by Jane)

I cannot find his wife in the 1920 census, some of the children were living with relatives in Alabama. I don't know if she died after him or maybe remarried.

If anyone has access to newspapers from 1912 and/or cemetery listings or has any idea who this funeral home was so I could write to them I would greatly appreciate any help.

There daughter Maggie married Charles "Henry" Bryant about 1912...He is another brick wall/mystery.

I can not find him anywhere previous to 1920 census where they were living in Pa.

Henry was supposely born in SC, but I would assume he must of been in TX if he married Maggie or she may of been sent to Alabama to live with relatives and she met him there.

Their first? son was born in Austin TX, on November 16, 1912

Any help would be appreciated :)

Some of the stories I had heard bits and pieces of.

I remember your mom and also visiting Austin with Aunt Myrtle during the summers probably around 1968 or so.

My brother, Bill, passed away in 1985 on the anniversary of Buster's death. We never called him Dad or Daddy, always Buster.

What started my searching for information was wanting to find proof of how Grandpa Holloway died. That was so long ago and in such a remote area, I believe anything could have happened without punishment.

Do you remember when Beauty passed away? I heard so many stories that she left everything she had (I do not even know if she truly had anything) to Erma's daughter. Do you know if that was true or not? I had also heard my entire life that Erma's daughter was really Uncle Scott's child. (Erma worked as Scott's secretary).

Did you know that oil had been found on Uncle Scott's property in Caldwell and I guess he died a very rich man? I think he left every thing to Rex and not the other children.

I had heard the stories about the 'Indian' grandmother, but are you saying they were never married? You have so much knowledge that I did not have. I am going to read under Pricey.

Thanks for all the information and guidance. I guess we will never know everything.

I am Fannye's youngest daughter, Catherine Lois. My family calls me Lois, but I have been known as Catherine my entire adult life.

There is quite a bit about the Holloway line that we are from on the Holloway board here. There are several different descendents from the three Holloway brothers from Alabama on this board. I have communicated with another branch of the family through Pricey Holloway's brother, James M. Holloway. Pricey is our great grandmother. She was Charles M. Holloway's mother. Charles M. was your father, Buster's, father. I never called your dad, Charley or C.D.. I use to call your brother C.D.
Yeah, I think our family had that bit of Indian story telling in them. My mom use to entertain us before TV with story about your daddy, her father and her family. Growing up on the creek were my favorite.
My mom had a scar under her fingernail where a squirrel that was not quite dead bit her when she picked it up. According to mom, Beauty could shot a squirrel through the eye saving all the meat for eating. That is why the shotgun was taken from her when her father was shot in front of her. She swore she could remember that day. Billye and Mrytle said she could not have remembered it since she was very young when it happened. One might remember something that dramatic. She said Beauty was screaming, "Get my shotgun." Mom said she got it but she was so small that she had to carry it cradled in her arms. When she reached the front gate, she could not get through due to the width of the gate as opposed to the length of the gun. She said she remembered a man leaning over her and saying, Here little lady let me help you with that. He took the gun. She said it was because he knew if Beauty got that gun, she would shot them. Aunt Mrytle said that the gun was kept over the mantle and Mom could not have reached it. The sheriff shot Charley as he pulled in the drive. They were all gamblers and according to Mom, they had lost a lot of money to Charley and they killed him. I have not found any newspaper articles yet, but there was a trial. I don't know if the sheriff was found guilty or not. Aunt Mrytle told me that the sheriff begs her to come see him on his death bed. He begs her for forgiveness, but she said she would never forgive him for shotting her father.
To the older girls Charley Holloway was a god. To my Mom, he was just a man, her father. She loved him but did not worship him. The older girls remembered him better. Of course, you dad never knew him. Daddy Hall raised him.
Your dad was a character. When he was young, he came to visit us quite a few times. He would pick up us kids and walk us across the ceiling of our kitchen. We burn coal oil and it smoked up the ceiling. All we had to do to remember Uncle Buster was to look at the ceiling. It had little footprints all over the ceiling.
Another story about your dad was after he came home from the war, he pulled some crazy stunts.
Once he was going to blow some stumps on the Farm where he and your mom were living. He tied dyamite around his waist. He did not have the caps in it. He rode the bus to Mayfield. The bus was empty by the time he got to Mayfield from Cameron, Texas. All the people had gotten off even though it was not their stop. At least, this was one of the tales Mom told me.
Also, there was a movie made based on your dad experiences in the war. He was Navy and his landing craft was shot out from under him. Beauty got the telegram that said he was missing in action. He went on a fought with the Marines. It was quite awhile before he was found. I actually saw the movie when I was young, but I don't remember the name of it.
Uncle Buster was also the person who shot Ben Milam in the town square. The statue that is. Shot him with a shotgun. Mom said that was true. I don't even know if that statue is still there.
I never knew Pricey of course. She died in early 1900 before Charley met Beauty. She was Indian. That is why they were not married. A white man could not marry an Indian. I have not found proof of it yet. But many different family members that I have reconnected with have said that. She was either Cherokee or Chotaw. The land in Oklahoma that was given to the Holloways is in the Chotaw Reservation. Aunt Billye actually lived in Oklahoma for awhile.
Aunt Billye had a picture of Charley at one time. I don't know who has it now. My sister Mrytle said that she saw it one time. She said he looked like an Indian. Jet black hair, hook nose, dark skin and all. A very handsome man.
The Holloway name is English but there are Indians with the name Holloway. (Holiway, Holoway, Holaway)
I always thought English too. Especially looking at your dad. My mom had jet black hair. It was very shiny, blue black with very little wave.
Pricey's children's father was named Roach. That is English. I read where Henry M.Roach's father bought the land along with several other men that was the town square of the town where they settled. His name was Charles Lewis Roach. I have the cemetery list where his parents are buried. But Henry is not in that cemetery. I don't know where he is bured. I have seen his will giving all his world goods to Pricey's four children. He names them.
I am glad you got to know Beauty. She was a great lady especially since she never went to school that I know, was from Arkansas, one of fifteen children from Irish/Scottish blood. When she met Charley, she was fourteen years old. Her hair had never been cut and she had never worn a pair of shoes. She survived two husbands, numerous cancers, delivering fourteen children and buried eight of them. There were two or three sets of twins. I found one son that died before your dad was conceived. Mom never told me about this one. Maybe she did not know. He died in 1920.
Yet, through all of this, I don't think she had a mean bone in her body.
Yes, I live near Austin. I work in Austin.
I like to tell these stories about the family online so that others can share it. I did not hear about your mother passing until after the funeral. I did not hear about Aunt Billye until after the funeral.
I visited Pebble Grove last year with my daughter and grand daughter. So many graves added since I was at Beauty's funeral. It made it more real to see the graves of all of the people I had known and loved. I did not know that your brother,Bill, had died. I might have been in Atlanta and no one bothered to tell me. The last time I saw him, he was at the Farm with long blonde hair. I don't remember the year now.
I talk to Billye Lake ever once in awhile.

Put in a search on the board for Pricilla Holloway and you will pick up alot of the information about the Holloway family in Alabama and Texas.

Yes, I have great memories of Beauty. I used to go spend part of the summer's with her when she lived with Scott and Linda in Caldwell.

I guess it is my age (55) but so many things from my youth are cloudy. Plus, I believe we had family members who loved to spin tales and might have made some slight changes to stories. I would love to know more facts our our family.

When I cannot sleep I surf the web hoping to find details.

Why did you write stores under Pricilla Holloway? I don't know who that was.

Aunt Myrtle and Aunt Billye put the tombstone on Grandpa Holloway's grave, I believe. I went to String Prairie Cemetery in the last few years but I cannot remember exactly where it is. I will find out and let you know. My brother Charley goes there all the time and has even sent me pictures of the cemetery.

Please tell me everything you know about the Holloway family. What nationality is the family? I know my mother was full German, but I am not sure what my father was. I have always assumed English due to the name, but names in history are such a funny thing. People could not spell and made mistakes or their writing was so poor and not legible that people made mistakes or they just changed their names. Do you know who the Holloway family came to Milam county?

Are you Betty or Marie? I know alot about your father. I was his niece. I loved Uncle Buster. He was a very fun loving man. I could tell you many stories about him. I know that both of the girls were fairly young when he died. I have been researching the Holloway family. I remember stories Mom has told me. I have written quite a few on the Holloway Board under Pricilla Holloway.
The funny thing about how to spell the Holloway family name is that my Mother, Fannye, did not know for sure how it was spelled.
I would like to know where String Prairie Cemetery is located. I have been there but I was a teenager and did not pay attention to where I was going.
I was at Uncle Buster's funeral. And Beauty's. I was told by one relative that Charles M. Holloway was Charles Maxwell but the Macklin makes more sense since his father was Henry McLin Roach. I am sure that the Macklin is mispelled. I would like to know who put the tombstone on the grave and if Pricey has a tombstone.
Yep, Beauty did call him Charley. Last time I spoke to her she talked about Charley and Daddy Hall (Tyson). I hope you have memories of Beauty.
Let me hear from you. I live most of my life not know anymore than the name of both of my grandfathers and I have really enjoyed learning more about my ancestors past the grandfathers and grandmothers.

I don't want to go too far out on a limb because I'm new to this Holloway family (and am not even a Holloway descendant - studying them for earlier connections back in Alabama and Georgia) ... but I do think I can give you some avenues.

The man listed on the census in 1900 in Milam Co. as "Charliie H. Holloway," son of Pricy Holloway has a birth on the census as Apr 1869. The same man seems to be listed in 1910 in Milam Co. with a FIRST family as "Clay M. Holloway."

He's "Charles M. Holloway" (son of Pricy Holloway) on the 1880 census in Jackson Co., AL. In 1870 in Jackson Co., AL, he's just plain "Charles Holloway," son of "Prica Holloway."

His brother is James Milton Holloway, last found on the 1930 census of Carter Co., OK. His sister is "Ann Eliza Holloway" who md. Elisha Lewallen (found living inside Pricy Holloway's household in 1900 in Milam Co.). Elisha Lewallen died in 1904, and his widow & children went back to Jackson Co., AL, from Milam Co., TX ... but Eliza is found in Carter Co., OK, in 1930 living with her daughter Ethel Lewallen Steele ... except that the census taker oddly lists her by her maiden name as "Louisa Holloway."

I get it that the census taker heard " Eliza" in a southern accent and spelled it "Louisa," but why her maiden name is used instead of her married name is a mystery.

There was a probate filed on an uncle Daniel Lewallen in Jackson Co., AL, which specifies these relationships, including a mention of the marriage of Ethel Lewallen to Roy Steele, she being a daughter to Elisha Lewallen and Eliza Holloway and entitled to a share of the estate of Daniel Lewallen.

I have more specifics if you are interested, as well as sepculation as to how the Holloway line goes further backwards. You'll probably be able to order Oklahoma death certificates om James Milton Holloway and Eliza Holloway Lewallen (or Holloway) to get info on mom Pricy Holloway.

Joseph is Ann E. Whatley's 2nd husband, 12 years her junior. Don't know when/where met/married. After the 1880 census, never find him again.

Ann's first husband was William Henry Daniel/s born NC (both parents SC). They married in Lowndes Co, AL 7 Oct 1857. By 1900 she's widowed again, living in Milam Co., TX and the census says she had 4 living children of 6 total. We know of 2 Daniel children. Either the census is wrong or we're missing 2 kids, don't know if Blanchard or Daniel. She died after 1917, probably in Livingston, Fisher Co., TX where she was living in 1910 and where her son's family was living, but no records found.

I am searching for any infor on my ggrandmother Mattie Lewis, born about 1873 in Rockdale, Milam County, TX. Married John J. Putnam in 1893. They had three children Thomas Jefferson Putnam, John Jay Putnam, and Ezettia Putnam. Mattie and Ezettia died late 1890's or early 1900's of fever. Any info is greatly appreciated.

I am looking for anyone who has any information on my father's family.

My grandfather is buried in String Prairie Cemetery and his headstone says Charley Macklin Holaway, April 22, 1867 to July 21, 1921.

My father is buried in Pebble Stone and was born the month after his father was killed.

Any information you can provide will be so appreciated. I have so little information.

My grandmother (Renia Flinn Holloway) remarried Hall Tyson.

I am a member of the Maddox DNA project and I am seeking any living male descendant of Henry N Maddox. Henry N. Maddox was listed in the 1880 Federal census in Precinct 5 of Milam County TX. I know at least one of his sons(Henly N. Maddox) still lived in Milam County TX in Justice Precinct 1 in the 1930 Census. Another son, Willie E. Maddox, was listed in the 1930 Bexar County TX census in San Antonio. Also, a Roland L. Maddox buried in 1984 in the Val Verde Baptist Church cemetery, Milam County, is a descendant of Henry N. Maddox. I need to find a living male descendant who might be willing to submit a DNA test. The test is painless, only involves a saliva sample. The Maddox DNA project only tests the DNA that is passed on from father to son bearing the same surname. Adopted children will not qualify. Please contact me if your society can furnish me any names to contact for information.

Mable Wieser, 84, of Rosebud died Sept. 29 at her home. Funeral services were held Oct. 2 at Cook-Gerngross-Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Rosebud with Rev. Lee Scott officiating. Burial followed at Woodland Cemetery in Rosebud.

Wieser was born Sept, 9, 1923 in Luling to Thomas and Lena Wright Robbins.

She graduated from Cedar Bayou High School in Baytown. She received an associates of arts degree in nursing from Houston Junior College of the University of Houston. She was a graduate from the Jefferson Davis Hospital School of Nursing in Houston.

She married Harold Wieser on Dec. 23, 1945.

She also volunteered for the U.S. Nurses Cadet Corp. at Jefferson Davis Hospital. She lived in Rosebud in 1975 and worked as a Registered Nurse and was Director of Nursing at Gulf Coast Hospital in Baytown and Heritage House Nursing Home in Rosebud.

She was member of the Rosebud Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Wieser, Sr. of Rosebud; son, Harold Wieser, Jr. and "daughter in love," Billie, of Rosebud; daughter, Becky Lundell and husband, Mike, of Luling; sister, Anna Belle Trahan of Baytown; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Memorials can be made to The Woodland Cemetery Association or the Charity of Choice.

Austin Thomas, 97, of Rosebud, died Sept. 23 in a Austin nursing home. Viewing will be held on today from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Cook-Gerngross-Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Rosebud. Services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Friday in the Friendship Baptist Church in San Antonio with Rev. R. L. Archield, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Thomas was born in Burlington to Matt and Effie Clayton Thomas, Sr.

He lived most of his life in Rosebud. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and worked as a welder.

LEXINGTON - George O. Johnson, 77, of Lexington died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007 in the V.A. Hospital in Temple. Private services will be held at a later date.

Mr. Johnson was born May 16, 1930 in Detroit, MI to Ralph F. and Gladys (Bohrer) Johnson.

He worked as a technician with Tracor in Austin for 22 years before retiring in 1985. He was a resident of Lexington for the past 14 years and formerly of Bastrop.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Johnson; two sisters, Edith Johnson and Grace Johnson.

Survivors include his son, Dale Wayne Johnson of Round Rock; daughter, Carye Robinson of Austin; granddaughter, Ashley Hegstad of Austin.

Jean McDonald, 78, of Rockdale since 1982, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007 in the Manor Oaks Nursing Home in Rockdale. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8 at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Rev. Jack Chelf of First Baptist Church in Rockdale officiating. Burial followed in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale.

Mrs. McDonald was born May 10, 1929 in Milam County to August Anton Tuma and Lida Lawhon Tuma.

In her early years she traveled with her husband, a seismography company employee, which took them to Africa, Australia and Canada as well as many places in the United States. She later worked in home healthcare for the Girling Agency, was a dispatcher for the Rockdale Police Dept., a cook for Richards Memorial Hospital and a custodian for First Baptist Church in Rockdale where she often said “What a privilege it is to take care of God’s House.”

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Hudson, Emerson, Deck, Kit Carson, Phil and Sam Doyle Tuma; two sisters, Evelyn Pierrington and Lula Zora Purnell.

Survivors include her daughter, Katherine Miller-Kaplan of Seaside, OR; sister, Geraldine Offield of Rockdale; two grandchildren, Jenna C. Miller-Kaplan of Ashlan, OR and Dane J. Miller-Kaplan of Tokyo, Japan; numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers include Ed Tuma, Raymond Tuma and the Deacons of the First Baptist Church.

Doris Virginia Sullivan, 80, of Rockdale since 1953, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007 at the Renaissance Villa in Rockdale. Graveside services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 in the Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell with Rev. Doug Springer officiating.

She was born Nov. 14, 1926 in Ft. Worth to Hillard and Thelma Ruby (Crews) Sargent.

She married Richard Marvin Sullivan on Aug. 16, 1940 in Cleburne.

Mrs. Sullivan owned and operated La Tienda Beauty Shop in the Praesel Addition in Rockdale.

She was preceded in death by her husband on March 29, 1999; two infant daughters, Patricia Ann and Doris Virginia Sullivan; grandson, Richard Arnold Sullivan, Jr.; parents; sister, Betty Bell.

Denson Weems, 93, of Temple, formerly of Rockdale, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Rev. John Warren of St. John’s United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale.

Mr. Weems died Monday, Oct. 8, at William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple.

A Temple resident for the past five years, he previously lived in Rockdale since 1951.

He was born Oct. 13, 1913, in Cameron to Melvin and Ellie (Moore) Weems.

In 1936, he married Irene Georgia Karisch in Hempstead.

Mr. Weems attended Rockdale ISD and was class president for three years and captain of the football team. He also attended Southwestern University on a football scholarship.

He lived and worked at Freeport for Dow Chemical until World War II when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Dow Chemical.

Mr. Weems came to Rockdale in 1951.

He was a retail grocer, owning and operating Weems Super Market from 1951 to 1961.

Mr. Weems was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Rockdale and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Rockdale.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene G. Weems, on Oct. 8, 1981.

Survivors are a son, George Weems and wife Ann of Boerne; a brother, Jack Weems and wife Phyllis of West Columbia; a sister, Eva Sides and husband Marvin of Rockdale; five grandchildren, Coy Weems and wife Noel, Stacey Collier and husband Glenn, Rebecca McCoy and husband Evan, Elizabeth Jones and husband Jesse, and Katherine Irene Weems; three great-grandchildren, Grant Collier, Blake Collier and Anna Irene Collier; and two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Weems and Susie Weems, both of Rockdale.

HOUSTON - Funeral services for Coleman Twiggs, Jr., 85, were held Sept. 22, 2007, at Johnson Funeral Home in Houston with Pastor Marvin C. Delany officiating. Burial was in Houston National Cemetery. Mr. Twiggs died Wednesday, Sept. 19.

He was born Oct. 27, 1921, to Coleman Twiggs, Sr. and Mary Pratt Twiggs in Minerva.

Mr. Twiggs attended school in Rockdale and graduated from Aycock High School.

He then joined the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge after many years of service.

He married Velma Louise Locklin and they had a daughter, Coleman Louise Twiggs.

Mr. Twiggs later married Pearl Mosley and they had a daughter, Rita Lanience Twiggs.

He was married to Kay F. Twiggs, who preceded him in death on Sept. 14.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Connie Twiggs; and two sisters, Willie Mae Harris and Lillian Smith.

Survivors are two daughters, Evang. Dr. Coleman Douglas and husband Ellis, Jr. of Rockdale, and Pastor Dr. Rita Twiggs of Dallas; four grandchildren, Charles Carr of San Jose, CA, Constance Hippel (Roman) of Rockdale, Harvey Burgess, III (Pam) of Rockdale, and Twana Cabrera (Valentin) of Georgetown; five nieces, Vivian Twiggs Wilson of Fort Worth, Mary Twiggs Clark, Hattie Twiggs Jones, Connie Twiggs Murphy, all of Dallas and Helen Twiggs Rhem of Temple; a step-son, Rev. Mr. Jatzlau died Thursday, Sept. 20, in Weatherford.

He was born Nov. 2, 1939, in Nacogdoches to Herbert and Minnie (Urban) Jatzlau.

A resident of Weatherford for the past 11 years, he previously lived in the Lexington-Fedor area and a number of places along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast.

Mr. Jatzlau was a petroleum engineer for 20 years and also worked for the Lee County sheriff’s office.

He was a graduate of Louisiana State University and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fedor.

Mr. Jatzlau was a U.S. Army veteran and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors are a son, Mark Jatzlau of Fedor; two daughters, Kathy Hanks of Lake Charles, LA, and Debbie Hopkins and husband Robert of Weatherford; and a grandson, Stephen Hanks.

Mrs. Means was born June 7, 1922 in Lexington to Isaac William and Naomi (Hester) Parker.

She married W. Scott Means on Oct. 3, 1965.

She served as an Associate in the Division of Student Work of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, she became the librarian and secretary to the President of the Baptist Theological Seminary in Zurich, Switzerland.

In 1952 she became a Campus Minister at the University of Texas in Austin, serving as Director of the Baptist Student Union from 1952 to 1955, and Coordinator of International Student Ministries for Texas Baptist from 1955 to 1965.

Mrs. Means was a graduate of Texas State College for Women in Denton. She received her Master’s degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth.

She was preceded in death by her husband on March 25, 2001; parents; two sisters, Naomi Elizabeth Parker and Lois Jeanette Rowland Lunsford.

Survivors include four step-grandchildren, cousins and many friends.

Mrs. Melton died in a one-vehicle accident on Saturday, Sept. 15, near Griffin Chapel. The accident also claimed the life of her daughter, Delilah Melton, and her granddaughter, Brittany Johnson.

A Griffin Chapel resident since 1983.

She was born May 24, 1964, in Rockdale to David and Billie Gunnels, Sr.

She married Richard Melton on Dec. 27, 1983, in Cameron.

Mrs. Melton was a member of Goodwill Baptist Church of Milano and worked at the Rockdale Wal-Mart as department manager since Sept. 15, 1988.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Billie Gunnels, Sr.; a brother, Danny Glen Gunnels; and a sister, Connie Ann Gunnels.

Survivors are her husband, Richard Earl Melton of Griffin Chapel; six children, Jordan Richard Melton, Kendall Alexander Clayton, Rebekah Ann Melton, Jayson Gibbons, Mayson Gibbons and Faullenn Gibbons, all of Griffin Chapel; a goddaughter, Alexia Melton of Griffin Chapel; three brothers, Joe Lee Gunnels of Milano, David Gunnels Jr. and wife Beverly of Milano, and Mike Wright of Cameron; three sisters, Debra Karen Gunnels, Peggy Ruth Arrington and Ernestine Wright, all of Milano; also, two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Tim Stewart, Ray Brown, Fred Grayson, Eugene Chmelar, Robert Clayton and Kenny Myers.

Honorary pallbearers were Billy Jo Tindle, E. J. Ross, Jermaine Watkins, Tiffany Vasquez, Terrande Ford, Ricky Wilson, James Castaneda, Rita Castaneda, Olivia Castaneda and Larry Wilcox.

Edmund Schmidt, Jr., 77, of Crockett, died Sept. 28, at his residence. Funeral services were held Oct. 1 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Crockett with Rev. Larry Knobloch officiating. Military graveside services were held Oct. 1 at the Hope Lutheran Memorial Park in Buckholts.

Schmidt was born Nov. 30, 1929 in Lampasas to Myrtle Garner Schmidt and Edmund C. Schmidt.

He married Dorothy Schnur on Oct. 4, 1952.

He grew up in Cameron and was a graduate of Yoe High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean war. After the war, he returned to college receiving his degree from Southwest Texas State University in chemistry.

He lived in Houston for many years. He was a retired salesman of heavy duty industrial coating employed by Pittsburgh Paints, Exxon and lastly, International Coating.

He was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church where he was president of the congregation and served on many boards. He was known for his love of hunting, gardening, golf and bridge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy.

Survivors include daughter, Susanne of Austin; sons, Shane of Austin and Shawn of Miami, Fla.; sister, Elizabeth Holloway of Rockdale; a dear friend, Bennie Rush of Crockett; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Larry Holloway, Jesse Skinner, Don Allen Rush, Leon Nunley, Randall Browning and John Bonner.

Payne was born Sept. 1, 1922 in Milam County to Louis J. and Jewel B. (Morris) Watson.

She was a retired service representative for Southwestern Bell.

She married William D. "Bill Payne on May 4, 1948 in Thorndale.

She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church In Rockdale. She was past Matron in the order of Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, William D. "Bill" Payne of Rockdale; sons, Dennis W. Payne and William Dwain Payne both of Rockdale; grandchildren, William David Payne, Kara Denise Payne Wesley Garrett Payne and Laramie Paige Payne.

L. W. (Lester William) Henry, 81, of Cameron died at his home Oct. 7. Family visitation will be held Friday 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron. A graveside funeral will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Henry Family Cemetery on CR 258 (off FM 979). At time of fellowship and food will take place after the funeral at the Henry Home.

Henry was born on Dec. 29, 1925 to Jon F. and Lena Conrad Henry in Floresville.

He grew up in south Texas and served his country in the U.S. Marines during WWII and serving in the Pacific Theatre.

He married Clio Rae Dickey on July 8, 1950 and settled in Houston.

After retiring they moved to their ranch outside Cameron.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Fred and J. W. Henry and a sister, Irene Carr.

Survivors include his wife, Clio; sons, Rick and friend, Sue Malone, of Houston and Pat and wife, Ava, of Cypress; grandchildren, Stephanie Seawright and husband, Gene, of Tomball, Teresa Ruiz and husband, Mike, of Cypress, and Jon Henry, of Cypress; sisters Gladys Teague and Mildred Marlowe, both of Conroe, Doris Griesenbeck of San Antonio; brother, Charles of Montgomery; one great great-grandson, Cameron; and many nieces and nephews.

Caffey was born on Nov. 18, 1937 in Salty to Dow and Norma (Towery) Caffey.

He married Melba Jean Stewart on July 27, 1957 in San Gabriel Baptist Church in San Gabriel.

He graduated from Thorndale High School. He was a sales representative for Lextron in animal health. He worked for Lextron and other companies like them for 46 years. He was a member of the Salty Community Church and attended church at Meadowbrook Baptist.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Doyle Wayne Caffey.

Mr. Leitzke died Monday, Oct. 1, at his home.

A retired truck driver.

He he was born May 12, 1934, in Hustisford, WI, to William and Hilda Leitzke.

He married Irene Blaszak.

Mr. Leitzke was a school bus driver for Cameron ISD and a member of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church.

A son, Thomas William Leitzke, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Leitzke of Cameron; two daughters, Cathlyn Leitzke of Madison, WI, Brenda Jennings of Elgin; a sister, Lorene Rufener of Harford, WI; also, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
