My name is Saundra Sweetwyne, and I'm helping my granddaughter research her family tree for a school project.
Even though our name is spelled with a y instead of an i, all the Sweetwine's are related.
I do have some information that might be helpful to you.
You can reach me at my email address: saundra.sweetwyne@comcast.net

Hi Yvonne, I read your post and in my family their was a woman named Joesphine Sweetwine. She is my great great grandmother. Sweetwine and they come from the charleston and summerville area in south carolina? My mother tells me that is a Cherokee last name. There is an Anna in my family that married a man with the last name Gray and had 21 children. Please e-mail me at fly1413@yahoo.com if this can be of any use to you

This is great! Thank you. Any information that I might be able to trace is helpful. I'm not sure of the details regarding my grandfather except, that he served in the Army during WWI with the 339th Service Battalion and was discharged in 1919. I'm told he was also part Cherokee. He and my grandmother were never married but they did have several children together.

I'm told he is buried in downtown Charleston, in what was once a cemetery but is now buried underneath the Pepsi Co. off of Meeting St. Rd. My grandmother
is buried across the street in the portion that still remains a cemetery with other family members.

I will share this info with my father and see if he can recall anything else. My email address is ellingev@berkeley.k12.sc.us.

Thank you very much for the info. I have a copy of his discharge papers but it did not list a great deal of information.

This will be a great place for me to start looking. Right now, I'm trying not to cry because I'm so overwhelmed at the thought of possibly finding out about my grandfather. I can only imagine how my father will react since he did not get to know his father very well.

My grandmother was born in 1902. So, this is would put them around the same time. Please, let me know if you have any other info. I can and go through them piece by piece. Right now, any info is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

I sent you several links to the documents off-board. Let me know if you have any problems accessing the images. I lost him in the census after 1920, unless he is the Thomas Sweetwine, born about 1901 in S.C., who is living in New York in 1930. Ages have been known to vary by as many as ten or more years, but unless you have reason to believe he moved there after 1920 and then came back to S.C. later, I would hesitate to jump to any conclusions.

Hope this helps!

Here is what I know about the Thomas I know. My grandfather was his brother Leo August Sweetwine, and I believe there were 18 children. His mother was Florann Sweetwine, her father was August Sweetwine (half Cherokee), his wife was Sackie born in Slavery. They Lived in Wadmalaw Island, SC. if this sound familiar let me know. also the name Thomas seems to run in our family. He may be my grandfather's brother or his uncle on his grandfather's side. However, their father was sad to be the local sheriff. Mr. Clemens. I am not sure on this spelling.

Thank you very much for the documents. I am having some difficulty with getting them. I did ask my father and he said, that my grandfather was born in 1896 but he wasn't sure of the exact date. He is very excited and ask me to tell you how grateful he is to you for helping him. I have to say the same-Thank you!
