I have found the answer to my query.
According to the 1979 SAR application of John Roger Noll, the 'government bronze marker was put up...about 1975...at which time Tiadaghton Chapter [SAR. PA] recognized the ceremony.'
The application paper was found on the SAR site, but only if the state was left blank. I am appreciative of the help others have given.

Does anyone have the "SAR Patriot Index" CD that they can look up the entry for Nathaniel Kelsey for me?

Nathaniel Kelsey enlisted in Ulster county, New York during the Revolutionary War. Sometimes his surname was spelled Kelcy.

Nathaniel was born about 1743 on Long Island, NY, and moved to Ulster county where he died about 1803.

I checked the SAR online database at: http://www.rsar.org/rosters/findpatr.htm and it confirmed the years of birth and death. The web page also listed "SAR appl" and gave a citation of "SAR Patriot Index Edition III (CD: PP2210, Progeny Publ., 2002) plus data to 2004"

With thanks,
Cathy

The DAR and SAR applications concern proving service of the Patriot, and genealogical evidence as to descendants down to the applicant. They do not ask for or require any information about ancestors of the Patriot. Lookup volunteers on the DAR board do not have access to any ancestral data on Patriots.

Research in local records where your Patriot lived may turn up estate, land, church or other records indicating parentage.

Queries as to ancestry of a Patriot would be better placed on a message board for the surname or for the locality in which he lived.

Patriot Graves Lookup Site moved

The "Real Story of the American Revolution" site has been taken down. The rosters and useful links that were there are gone.

The lookup search for patriot graves (still with many mistakes) has a link from the www.sar.org main site. Click on the 'History' tab and choose 'Patriot lookups' from the drop-down menu. Or go to the lookup gateway here:

http://www.sar.org/history/patriotlookup.html

The 'Patriot Lookup' does *not* mean a lookup of patriots under whose service SAR members joined the organization. That information is still only available on a CD sold to members.

Good hunting,
Jade

The NSSAR has a grave marking program under the tab, "Patriot" and "grave marking" at the www.sar.org web page. You can correspond via email and I will try to help as much as I can.

Jeff

Thank you for looking. I will proceed as though no descendant of Charles Darnell BRADFORD ever applied to the SAR.

Question: Charles lived and died in Fairfield County, SC, but there is no record of a grave for him there. How and where could his descendants get a marker placed for him?

Also, my husband and I live in Georgia, so should he apply for membership locally (Button Gwinnett Chapter, Gwinnett County, GA) or in the SAR chapter that serves Fairfield County, SC?

I looked in the 2006 membership directory and found Bradford, but not Charles Bradford. Try the www.sar.org site and click on the membership tab. You can do a patriot search and also contact a helper. Since this is is South Carolina, I would contact that State society.

Hudson - I noted your post some time ago relating to James Rees, Revolutionary War Soldier. I descended back to James through his son William Rees and wife Amelia Eleanor Beall. I am a member of the DAR and I have been working on James Rees as a supplemental patriot/ancestor. I have yet to find his military papers/documents and I will be the first to prove James Rees in the DAR patriot list so I hope you can help guide me. Any assistance you might give would be so very much appreciated. If you can contact me through my email address: parfittd@comcast.net

Regards.

SAR Lookup, Please - Charles Darnell BRADFORD

Patriot: Charles Darnell Bradford
Birth Date: c 1734 Birth Place: Maryland
Death Date: 1824 Death Place: South Carolina
War Time Residence: Fairfield District, South Carolina Spouse: Mary Lemon

Comments: I am writing to inquire if any descendants of the subject patriot have ever joined the SAR, or if a grave marker or historical marker has ever been placed for this patriot in Fairfield County, South Carolina? I have already checked with the DAR, but no one ever joined that society as a descendant of Charles Darnell Bradford.

According to his pension application # RW2696 to the State of South Carolina dated 20 Nov 1818, he served in the South Carolina forces in different capacities in several campaigns, including quartermaster and deputy quartermaster general, and was with Gen. Sumter's forces at the Battle of Fishing Creek. After Sumter's defeat at the hands of Lt. Col. Banastare Tarleton, Charles Darnell Bradford was taken prisoner by the British and imprisoned at Camden (as was his oldest son, John Lemon Bradford) under the most deplorable conditions including near starvation. The son, being only a foot soldier who joined the SC forces at age 16, was released from prison after about four months; but Charles Darnell Bradford was brought before a military tribunal composed of British officers, tried and condemned to death.

According to his obituary which was published in the SC State Gazette and reprinted 14 Aug 1824 in the Independent Chronicle and Boston Patriot, Charles Darnell Bradford died at age 90, some 44 years after he had to watch several of his comrades in arms executed for treason upon the British gallows, was placed upon those same gallows with the rope around his neck and forced to view his intended grave and "rude coffin," all while surrounded by his wife, children and friends. At the last minute the British remitted the death sentence and Charles Darnell Bradford was restored to his family. At the time of his death Bradford was believed to be "the oldest surviving soldier and officer belonging to the provincial troops of South Carolina."

If none of this information has ever before come to light and this American patriot has never been listed in the SAR patriot index or appropriately honored for his service to the American cause, I would very much appreciate your advice on how to get him so honored.

Re: DAR/SAR LOOKUP James FLOWERS

I have just begun searching my Flowers background. (My mother was a Flowers.) Today I came across some typed geneology from a relative who was communication with my mother in the 90's before her death. In this validated information his children are traced through his wife Theodoshea Bagby. I can send you that birth information if you wish. The only information I have on his Revolutionary service is that in 1777-78 he "gave material aid; rec'd payment for it in 1782."There is nothing listed for service in the War of 1812. He would have been 69 years old - not sure he would have served. There are records of his receiving 25 acres of land in Powhatan, Co. VA from his father-in-law, Henry Bagby, in 1790. In 1791 there is a deed to a slave, John Payne, Goochland, Co. VA. Hope this information is helpful.

I found the following information online:

Revolutionary War participants recognized by the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). Taken from SAR Patriots Index.

Charles McClung, Private, Pennsylvania, born 1757/1758, died 1783, wife Margaret Young, son Charles McClung who married Jane Robinson.

I am hoping to verify it.
