Tomlinson, Henry (, ironfounder and stove grate manufacturer).

Residing at Bath Foundry, Westgate; h Orchard House, Victoria street, Masbro', in 1862.

Recorded in: Drake's Rotherham & District Directory - 1862.

The inscription may primarily have something to do with the Baths Foundry, and/or J C Morgan becoming mayor in 1877.

If you are still interested I might have an answer. Morgan and Waide were taken to court in 1877 regarding the unpaid debts of the Lake District Hematite Co. of which they were two of the directors. It is referenced in a book I have if you want a copy of the entry? Also there is an article on the Durham Mining Museum website: http://www.dmm.org.uk/news18/8771004.htm

I am currently surveying the mine opened up by the company near Grasmere.

I am looking for information on the marriage of ELIZABETH WEST to JOHN ROEBUCK at Rotherham 27th June 1642. I have been unable to find the original Parish record to view. I am researching Roebucks from Penistone and looking for a marriage of John but do not have the name of his spouse. His first child was born in 1645 and thought this maybe him. If anyone can tell where this John came from I would be very grateful

Hello I am repeating a query received by a member of Rotherham Family History Spciety hoping that someone may help with information:

"I wonder if you could help me. My Fathers family are from Rotherham and I had a cousin who was killed during world war 2 and buried at Le Havre in France.

His name was Wilfred Norburn and I’ve recently found out that a plaque in his memory was inside, the now demolished, Kimberworth Road UNITED REFORM CHURCH.

Does anyone know what happened to the plaque, or was it destroyed along with the church?

There was a Barbara Brazier who sang with a concert party in the late 60s from the Blackburn area.
Also a Barbara Brazier married a Terrence Matthewman in 78

I am members interests co-ordinator at Rotherham Family History Society and one of our members has asked me to place this on our mailing list to see if anyone can assist:

I was born Dorothy Cropper at 118 Psalters Lane, Rotherham to Dora [neeJowett] and Clifford Cropper on 31st May 1931.
On my Birth Certificate, my Father (born 1901) is named as a Testing Clerk at Park Gate Iron & Steel Works. I know he lost part of his leg in an accident at the works when he was about 17, apparently having been run over with a loco in the works. I am unable to find details of his accident either from local newspapers or locally.
I wonder if anyone could advise me where to search further?

Welcome to an addictive hobby! You can look on freebmd and freecen to get you started, also most libraries have a subscription to ancestry which you can access for free with your library card. To get a global coverage you will need a subscription. Also worth looking at are blogs like britishgenealogy. Your local FHS should be a great help. Have fun.

Lucy Annie Coy, housewife aged 76, of 14 First Avenue. Buried 6 March 1934.
Mathias Farnsworth, retired aged 82, of 43 Durham Place. Buried 16 November 1939.
Masbrough Cemetery Burials:
Lucy Farnsworth aged 52, of 13 Hall Street. Buried 2 February 1914. Parents named as William and Hannah.

I'm planning to visit the Arras in August where Ernest John Ridgway's name is on the memorial. I believe that I'm related to this line of Ridgways and was wondering whether you might be able to send me anything you found on the history of the Essex Regiment in the Great War. I also have a family tree dating back to 1728 (Thomas Ridgway who married a Dorothy)if this would interest you.

Why did Robert George Blood change name to George Gray?

I have a Robert George Blood born 1860 in Ashby De La Zouch, Derbyshire who died 1928 in Ecclesall Bierlow, Derbyshire.
I found his birth on Free BMD named as Robert George Blood but he appears to have changed his name c1890 to George Gray when he moved to Sheffield.
Would anyone know how to try and confirm this as I have had no luck so far.

My great great grandmother was Ada Firth (nee Ward) and the company belonged to my great great uncles Colin and William Ward. Apparently at some or other all the family worked for the Mineral Water company.

Terrific to hear from you. We are so grateful for the information. Does the will say what Mary's relationship to Thomas was? When Mary married she stated she was of Kilnhurst. We believe she was the daughter of John Wright and Mary Scamadine. Thomas Wright died not long after Mary's husband was transported.
Any information on the family would be greatly appreciated.

Mary Magrath appears in the Will of my ancestor Thomas Wright. The Will was made in 1835 and Thomas died 13.9.1837. She received £200. Also in the Will are Thomas Scamadine Wright, John Scamadine Wright who were both nephews, Ann Glossop, niece, daughter of Wright/Scamadine and Sarah Fox the daughter of his late niece Edith Fox the wife of John Fox.

According to census returns Thomas, John and Ann were all born in Kilnhurst which is the next village to Wath.

I have a map, and Holland Street was just off Chemist Lane near Mary Street where the Kingfisher pub is.
Chemist Lane is still there today.

Wright - Scamadine - Magrath Family of Rotherham

Looking for information on a convict who was transported to Tasmania in 1837.

Information:

Daniel Magrath (born 1798 - 1808 Limerick, Ireland)
married on the 26 February 1829 or 1 March 1829 Wath upon Dearne, York to Mary Wright (possiby the daughter of Thomas Wright and Mary Samadine, born Rotherham? c.1808)

Children
George Wright Magrath baptised circa 24 January 1830.
Mary Scamadine Magrath baptised circa 12 July 1832 (it is believed she died in infancy or as a toddler between 1832 - 1835)
Thomas Henry Magrath born circa 1835, Rotherham, York

Daniel was transported at the Warwick Assize in 1835 for forgery. He was a butler and gentlemans servant at the time.
After his arrest Mary moved back to Rotherham. Daniel was in prison when Thomas was born.

In 1839 Mary and the two boys were given free passage to Tasmania, Australia to join Daniel. By this time Daniel had proven himself to be honest and reliable.

Any Information on the family (marriage or baptism certificate transcript) or Daniel and Mary's parents greatly appreciated.

I found Annie Elizabeth Roebuck b1904 AMJ 9c 765 Rotherham.
I found a "possible" death 1951 JFM 2d 755 Staincross, Yks.

I have a birth certificate for a Thomas Smith born at 119 Psalters Lane in Rotherham on 12th July 1899.

His mother is listed as a Elizabeth Smith who was a domestic servent, who's residence is list at the same address. There is no father listed.

Would any one be able to shed further light in either of them for me.

Iam looking for John Henry Roebuck he is my mothers grandfather born 1887 i did not have a birthday day and month but i did a check and there is only 1 born in 1887 so i figure that could be him did not know where he came from in england and it told me rotherham so the date i have is dec then i checked for his father for the date it told me june 1867 in huddersfield now this is a guess that when john henry was born he was atleast 20 so if anyone has any information that would be great john henry moved to nova scotia and married kate willett nov 22 1911 he died 1961 in nova scotia his parents are thomas and tammie roebuck i could have not got the right spelling cause when they write its hard to see please email me at dianneedmondson@hotmail.ca
